ISO 639-1: (rightsnone)
Does anyone know why the ISO 639-1 part on the front page is incubator projects is followed by (rightsnone) instead of a simple (none) and how it can be changed? The use of rights renders the string incorrectly in languages that differentiate between singular and plural here (Skolt: jie leäkku) or for languages that add rights into the string's translation (Finnish: ei oikeuksia, i.e., no rights). This can't be changed to fit the usage here on the incubator because it is also used elsewhere in MediaWiki in its intended meaning. Thanks, Yupik (talk) 11:09, 3 January 2022 (UTC)
- The technical reason is that the

template uses the rightsnone message to display "none". This is a cute hack, probably by SPQRobin, but unfortunately, as Yupik says, the word "none" may be translated differently in different contexts in some languages, even if it's the same in English. - It should probably be a translatable template with
TNT
or something along these lines, and "none" should be translated according to the right context. I'm not very good at using TNT, but perhaps Jon Harald Søby can help to make it?.. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 12:41, 3 January 2022 (UTC)- @Amire80, Yupik: So, converting this to
TNT
is... easier said than done. Mainly because
is meant to show things in the user's language, whileTNT
(which doesn't even exist here yet, BTW) works on the page language level. In other words, if we don't modifyTNT
somehow, it would always show in English on the pages wheretest wiki
is used. I think the most straight-forward solution is to add a message to the WikimediaIncubator extension for this purpose – and maybe even some more messages from that template if necessary – that are to be used in the template. This way the messages can be translated at Translatewiki, and they can be used here in the template with e.g.
. Does that sound like an OK solution? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 20:53, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Amire80, Yupik: So, converting this to

Language name translations
I have came across two strange translations for Aragonese and Asturian, corrected what I could find on Translatewiki (example: [1]), but I do not know where the strings come from to future project infopages (such as Wn/ar Wn/an). Could you tell me where to edit these, or make these changes yourself?
- [for Aragonese] aragonéz → aragóniai
- wikipedia article: w:hu:Aragóniai nyelv (Aragonese language)
- [for Asturian] asztúr → asztúriai
- wikipedia article: w:hu:Aszturleóni nyelv (Asturleonese language), but Hungarian projects use the shorter asztúriai (Asturian)

How are logos implemented in the test wiki
I already saw minbei wikipedia and slovak wikivoyage having its own logos replacing the textless wikipedia with words and the wikivoyage is replaced by wikicesty. How do u do that??BoholMappingAndRoutes (talk) 04:08, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
- Also Czech Wikivoyage has their own logo (though it's the same logo as with Slovak Wikivoyage). How that's achieved, I don't know, but I guess it is something that needs to be requested and set up in the test wiki environment. If you look carefully, you'll see that there is a small Incubator logo at the top left corner of the custom logo for the test wiki. Your localised version is something you can create on your own, you only need to download the exact font used for the logo (it may be a free typeface, given the nature of the project), and open the original logo in an SVG editor, replace the “Wikivoyage” text with text in your language, while keeping the style – so using the same font, using the same kind of word split you see, of course if your language does use Latin or Cyrilic typeset. Don't forget to convert text meshes to path meshes, to make sure the logo retains the font. You can use a free SVG editor called Inkscape, which is licensed under GNU GPL licence, one of the free copyleft licenses. Just make sure to save the resulting final SVG to Plain SVG instead of Inkscape SVG, because Inkscape SVG is designed to be understood and opened with Inkscape, and it uses groups with a special mode as layers you can turn off and on. It will be compatible with most of SVG renderers, but those renderers won't generally understand special flags that Inkscape is using for SVG workspace in editing environment. Plain SVG gets rid of these special elements and saves just the bare SVG data, no comments, no layers. — Polda18 (talk • contribs) 21:09, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
- And of course upload the modified logo to Commons, just make sure to include the original license and authorship of the original logo. — Polda18 (talk • contribs) 21:11, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
- @BoholMappingAndRoutes: As far as I understand, the filename has to be added to MediaWiki:Gadget-ProjectSpecificLogos.js. Once the logo is ready, and uploaded to Commons, you may notify the administrators on their noticeboard to make the changes. - Xbspiro (talk) 22:54, 5 February 2022 (UTC)

- @খাত্তাব হাসান, খাত্তাব হাসান: I think that you'll have to apply for permission to write pages or templates without prefixes for translations. Or Incubator has to implement translations module that would make translations like this easier and more managable. I would also benefit from being able to translate content of Incubator. — Polda18 (talk • contribs) 15:44, 5 February 2022 (UTC)

Can we use localised version of project namespace in project page prefix?
Hello. I am participating in development of Czech Wikivoyage, and I'm curious. Can we use our localised version of the project namespace in the project page prefix or do we have to use the generic (English) name of the project? Some pages have been created with the localised version and a redirect has been created from the generic version to the localised version. If only generic name can be used, I guess this is an issue and has to be fixed.
If you don't know what I mean: The generic English name of the project is of course “Wikivoyage”, therefore the prefix for such project pages (that will be in the designated project namespace) is “Wy/cs/Wikivoyage:”. As far as I understood from the guide to importing Incubator wikis to their designated space, the generic name of the project and generic namepaces will automatically resolve to the defined localised namespaces, which in case of our project pages is “Wikicesty”. Some project pages have been created with the prefix “Wy/cs/Wikicesty:” and redirect from generic prefixed version has been created to this localised, is that okay or do we have to fix it in order so our project will be able to export/import to “cs.wikivoyage.org”? For example, Wy/cs/Wikivoyage:Osnova průvodce městem/kostra redirects to Wy/cs/Wikicesty:Osnova průvodce městem/kostra. — Polda18 (talk • contribs) 13:49, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
- Oh, and somewhat unrelated, but I think it's not really worth it making a brand new thread for this, since it is also related to our test wiki: I noticed that other test projects use the “Help:” namespace for their help pages. We have only one help page, however it is in main namespace with localised prefix instead. I proposed to move our existing help pages to the appropriate namespace and make new ones already in that namespace, but I got to ask – does it matter if the help pages are located in designated namespace with project prefix or located in main namespace with prefix constisting of project and language code as well as generic or localised namespace as part of the page name after the project prefix? Thank you in advance. — Polda18 (talk • contribs) 20:56, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
- If the help page belongs to the Czech Wikivoyage, start the title with the prefix
wy/cs
. All pages marked with this prefix will get exported to the new wiki when it is created.- I think you may go either with the standard
Wikivoyage:
for internal project pages andHelp:
for internal help pages, or you may go with localised ones. Just use one form consistently. If you use the localised ones, let the future exporter/importer know the namespace translations. However this nuance might be best answered by our actual exporters/importers (@Sotiale:, @Jon Harald Søby:, @Martin Urbanec:, @MF-Warburg:). - You may have to provide namespace translations (at least for the project namespace Wikivoyage) to developers as described on mw:Help:Namespaces#Localisation.
- I think you may go either with the standard
- If the help page belongs to the Incubator in the Czech language, use
Help:ENGLISH_TITLE/cs
. - Xbspiro (talk) 22:04, 5 February 2022 (UTC)- Hello! I only reply here since I was pinged. While I did some imports, that's mainly because of me working on a tool simplifying importers' workflow -- I don't consider myself a "full" importer. If I understand how importing works properly, it should work as long as the localized project name is recognized by the future MediaWiki site. In other words, if cs.wikivoyage.org will recognize "Wikicesty" as the project namespace, all should be good. This is only an educated guess though, and I'd appreciate review/correction by others Xbspiro pinged. Best, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 22:15, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
- This is correct. However, to avoid problems, as Xbspiro says, a project should stick to just one variant - so either name all pages "Wy/cs/Wikicesty:" or all pages "Wy/cs/Wikivoyage:", but don't mix it and also don't create redirects. --MF-W {a, b} 01:26, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
- So in other words fix it, and I guess to the generic name. However, what about the help pages? I've seen other projects using the Help: namespace of Incubator with their project and language prefix, is that the recommended way? Thank you. — Polda18 (talk • contribs) 08:26, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

The correct answer actually is: Always use the generic project name. Furthermore: Never create redirects from one form to the other.
When the wiki is created the generic project name is always automatically part of the configuration while the localized name does not necessarily have to be. Also bear in mind, that the community can decide during the incubating phase to name the project different way, thus the pages with old name and links to them would become problematical while the generic name is eternal.
Using of localized name may cause problems with import of such pages to the newly created wiki. Redirects between localized and generic project name may cause partial or full overwriting of the content of given page and/or mess in its history.
Side note: This question has already been brought up by the same user 9 years ago.

Interslavic language
Recently, a new artificial language has emerged, which is Interslavic. It was created by a Czech programmer that basically took all words in all Slavic languages, analyzed them according to their thesaurus, and created a unified collection of grammar rules for written and spoken Interslavic. Because various Slavic nations use eighter Latin or Cyrilic script, Interslavic had to be adapted for both scripts. Some nations use both scripts as well (like Serbia). Because of that, Interslavic Wikipedia or any other Wikimedia project in Interslavic language would be based on Serbian model. So far, Interslavic had been merely just mentioned in some journals, spoken about with its creator in few news article, but really no other media apart from an official Interslavic news channel exist in Interslavic language. Interslavic is an artificial language, kind of like Esperanto, but the goal of Interslavic is different. Goal of Esperanto was unify speech across the entire globe, and to understand the language, you actually have to learn it (to speak it as well). Interslavic is only aimed to unify Slavic languages. You still need to lear the language to speak it, but to understand it, the only thing you need is to know one of the Slavic languages. Medžuslovjansky is a hybrid between all the Slavic languages and dialects. It would be really great if Interslavic Wikipedia or any other project of Wikimedia in Interslavic language existed. It would make it possible to share informations with friends and people across Slavic nations without any significant language barrier while not resorting to knowledge of English language. Of course, to contribute in Interslavic projects, one has to actually know the language. So far, only some people can actually speak and write in it. I don't, but I might learn it as well. Knowledge of Interslavic would be beneficial for tourist guides or flight attendants travelling between Slavic countries. Once you know Interslavic on an advanced conversational level, you can pretty much understand every single Slavic language in the world. That's another benefit of Interslavic. You need to learn just one language to understand all in the same language family. — Polda18 (talk • contribs) 13:35, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
Sadly, it doesn't currently have its own ISO 639-3 code. — Polda18 (talk • contribs) 13:39, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
- It turns out, it does. English Wikipedia article seems to be outdated in this manner then. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Polda18 (discussion • contribs).
- Agreed that Interslavic has some strengths over most constructed languages in that it's not some thought experiment or game or a new attempt to replace English as a global lingua franca with some arbitrary new words and grammar. Note that
qis
is an ISO code reserved for local use, i.e. it's not a part of the standard that everyone recognizes, but it's part of a series of codes set aside that anyone can use for any purpose, so someone other than SIL may useqis
to represent a completely different language. Between the fact that virtually no one really knows this language (tho hundreds of millions of Slavs will kind of understand it), and that it has no actual ISO code, I don't think creating a project in this is feasible. Also, as I recall, the Language Committee are very conservative about approving constructed languages or extinct languages versus living, organic ones. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 19:22, 3 March 2022 (UTC)- I see. So that basically means the Czech Wikipedia article doesn't have globally appliable informations. I guess it's gonna take quite a long leap to register Interslavic as an internationally recognized language in order for it to receive an official global ISO 639 code. Thank you for your explanation (and signing my comment, I forgot). — Polda18 (talk • contribs) 07:02, 4 March 2022 (UTC)

- I've noticed that, yes. I keep an eye on it. But given the extent of the details the request has, based on those details I think there's a high probability of it being accepted. Anyway, I found out that there is an unofficial Interslavic Wikipedia that isn't hosted on Wikimedia servers yet. I might propose tranfer under Wikimedia Foundation once the ISO code proposal is accepted. The current logo will have to be changed for the official Wikipedia project logo, but it may be used on the main page. The thing is, it's already quite well established, the only matter would be transfer of the content. Files would be transferred to Commons maybe (where possible, given by lisence), articles and other stuff would become part of the new wiki. It does have duplicate content, kind of like Serbian wiki, which also uses both Latin and Cyrilic scripts. One copy is in Latin, the other is in Cyrilic. The prefered version is Latin however, because project pages are in Latin script as well as namespaces. If they decline, then that's okay, I'll let it be. But if they agree, then it should be easier, because there already is content, right? But it should also be accepted by Foundation. — Polda18 (talk • contribs) 06:46, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
- I didn't know about the "qis" ISO code, how did you find it? Afaik, the planned and publicly requested identifier has always been "isv". I mean, if "qis" can grant us a Wikipedia, then great, though I'm confused. The isv.miraheze.org wiki has actually been created with intention to become a Wikipedia, changing logo and all that stuff is not an issue at all. I don't think it has any duplicate content, it just uses a converter like Serbian Wikipedia does.
- As for viability of this project, I think it has great potential (compared to Church Slavonic, which is incredibly more difficult). Interslavic is understood pretty well (except maybe Bulgarians, which I noticed in one conversation video on YouTube) and written (basic grammar from their native language applies) by Slavic speakers to a decent degree with some help of this dictionary that is actively being filled and maintained. Spoken language is mostly exercised in Discord servers related to the project, though I didn't partake so I can't say with precision how. But I can say there are at least a good hundred of people who can chat with each other in Interslavic fluently, out of many thousands interested in it (it's reasonable to expect only a dozen of those will actually edit the new Wikipedia though). -Vipz (talk) 22:07, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Vipz: I found "qis" on the Czech Wikipedia article, however, it seems that this code has regional meaning, it is reserved for regional usage, which means it can represent a different language elsewhere. It's not an official language code for Interslavic, and "isv" wasn't approved yet, it is still pending request, so right now, Interslavic doesn't have an official ISO 639-3 code. I don't know how long it takes to review the ISO 639-3 code request, I don't know how many new submissions are there in the first place. The fact that it is something a standardization organization has to approve, makes things incredibly difficult. — Polda18 (talk • contribs) 05:21, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

- I see.
How to delete an abusive page?
sorry I cannot speak English well.
In the Manchu test wiki, there are only 3 characters in the page Wp/mnc/ᡴᡝᠮᡠᡥᡝᠩᡤᡝ_ᠨᡳᡴᠠᠨ_ᡤᡳᠰᡠᠨ, and the characters are "尼玛的", and the contents have no links to the title, and they are abusive in Chinese, and I do not know how and where to delete the page? ᡴᠣᠮᠣᡝ ᡴᡝᠰᡳᡴᡝ (talk) 14:48, 4 March 2022 (UTC)

Chagatai Wiki
GD, Admins, I need a piece of advice re an old word I believe might be Chagatai. There is an Ottoman Turkish بكلك (Modern beylik 'principality'). The same word can be found in old Crimean Tatar language. Is there a similar Chagatai word? The problem is with this word origin belyak (unit). I have an old scanned Chagatai-Turkish dictionary by Alai bin Mukhibbi Ash-Sharif issued in 1868 but it's difficult to read and I'm stuck. If you help me I'll send you the dictionary scan, it may be handy --NP (talk) 14:02, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
- I don't think you can get an answer to this question here. --MF-W {a, b} 18:03, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
- The test wiki probably exists, but as an extinct language, it's normally not allowed to create new articles anymore unless Incubator administrators considered elsewhere. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 00:53, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
Templates and infoboxes
I asked a question there about Templates and infoboxes but I realized it may be better (and more likely to get answer) here. As Help talk:FAQ hasn't been active for more than 3 years. So my question is: how can I import templates from the English Wikipedia to a project here? I tried without success on Wp/ajp/مناقيش. Thanks for any help you can provide. A455bcd9 (talk) 08:55, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
- I eventually managed to do what I wanted to, but it's such a pain... Would be great to add a tutorial about template import. A455bcd9 (talk) 10:15, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, it's always annoying to try to re-use enwiki templates, because they have such an unnecessarily complicated structure, using lots of other templates, modules and stylesheets. --MF-W {a, b} 11:18, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
Number of articles
According to Wp/ajp/Main Page there are 8 articles, however when I click on "8" and go to Special:PrefixIndex/Wp/ajp I can see 10 articles (+ the main page). What's the reason for this difference? A455bcd9 (talk) 12:15, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
- The count is done by Template:Wp/ajp/NUMBEROFARTICLES, which gives the number of pages in Category:Wp/ajp. --MF-W {a, b} 12:49, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot! A455bcd9 (talk) 15:56, 26 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi, I want to ask where can I apply an automatic script converter for Wp/mnc? As I am now unifying the page name into one script. 墜星璃月 (talk) 02:12, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

- Recently I have created Module:Wp/mnc/Mnc-Latn-translit from English wiktionary and applied to several pages and it works well (However capital letters still need to be added to the module). So can we involve this in the script converter? 墜星璃月 (talk) 08:54, 22 May 2022 (UTC)
New function for AddPrefix gadget in Visual Editor
Hello, all! I have added a new function for the AddPrefix gadget so that it works for Visual Editor as well as code editors. When you add a link to another page now in Visual Editor, it will automatically include the prefix for the test wiki you are editing. I am also looking into fixing some problems with the code version of the gadget, but that is still under development.
If anyone has any suggestions for improvements (whether to this specific gadget or to something else), please do bring them up here, and I'll see if I can help. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 07:42, 6 April 2022 (UTC)

WikiProject self-starting
If your incubated instance has a (central) page for information and coordination of status and plans of its own development, than consider shaping it as a WikiProject self-starting and linking to this Wikidata, so that there is an overview on who is doing what, where and how. Also if you can think of better way to organize info this please suggest. -- Zblace (talk) 08:42, 11 April 2022 (UTC) Few corrections and clarrifications inserted --06:03, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

- In Esperanto Wikivoyage (now on its own subdomain) we are slowly testing a similar concept - but using the Esperanto WUG's project management tool for continued community maturation of the wiki. (but it is only test and not very promoted yet) --KuboF Hromoslav (talk) 15:47, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

- It is not super-specific or exclusive to Incubator (hence link also to Wikispore.org), but Incubator is where most of Wikimedia Wiki instances do self-establish (as in gather minimum content, users and protocols) to function. Maybe there is a better term that includes all aspects of development, but I went with this one. --Zblace (talk) 16:28, 14 April 2022 (UTC)
- It's basically a "WikiProject" for shaping up a new wiki, organized with an overview of all resources, planned course of action, progress, and discussion collected in one place. Nothing irregular, just labeled as a WikiProject, which fairly enough describes it well. -Vipz (talk) 03:37, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

Desktop Improvements update
Hello. I wanted to give you an update about the Desktop Improvements project, which the Wikimedia Foundation Web team has been working on for the past few years. Our work is almost finished! 🎉
The goals of the project are to make the interface more welcoming and comfortable for readers and useful for advanced users. The project consists of a series of feature improvements which make it easier to read and learn, navigate within the page, search, switch between languages, use article tabs and the user menu, and more.
- The newest features
- Table of contents - our version is easier to reach, gain context of the page, and navigate throughout the page without needing to scroll. It will be tested across our pilot wikis this week.
- Page tools - now, there are two types of links in the sidebar. There are actions and tools for individual pages (like Related changes) and links of the wiki-wide nature (like Recent changes). We are going to separate these into two intuitive menus.
- How to enable the improvements
- It is possible to opt-in on all wikis using the global preferences.
- On wikis where the changes are visible by default for all, logged-in users can always opt-out to the Legacy Vector. There is an easily accessible link in the sidebar of the new Vector.
The improvements are already visible by default for readers and editors on more than 30 wikis, including Wikipedias in French, Portuguese, and Persian.
The changes apply to the Vector skin only. Monobook or Timeless users are not affected.
- Learn more and join our events
If you would like to follow the progress of our project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.
You can read the pages of the project, check our FAQ, write on the project talk page, and join an online meeting with us.

About changing language naming
When I was translating the Incubator main page, it shows the language name as「うちなーぐち」. However, I also want to add the Kanji form of the name so that the name will be 「沖縄口/うちなーぐち」but I don't know where can change the naming. As for the Portal:ryu in translatewiki, the name is also shown as both scripts 「沖縄口/うちなーぐち」, thus I want to unify the naming into 「沖縄口/うちなーぐち」 as both scripts are used to write the language. 墜星璃月 (talk) 17:40, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
- I think @Amire80 can help you with this. Ninja✮Strikers «☎» 10:05, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry, for technical reasons, it's only possible to have one. I consulted with several linguists who know Okinawan, and they all said that using Hiragana is the safest variant.
- The name on the Incubator main page comes from the software configuration. There are several languages that have multiple names, but we are trying to stop this practice and not to add any new ones. I will, however, add the names in Kanji and Katakana as aliases, so that they are findable in the search box. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 11:08, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for the information. While I have seen other languages that have multiple names are written in different writing systems for example Latin and Cyrillic, they are not compatible as they cannot be written at the same time thus may require a converter, in that case we can choose one script to write the project so the name can also be decided by looking what script is used to write the project. However, I think that for Okinawan the situation is different. For うちなーぐち and 沖縄口, うちなーぐち is the pronunciation of 沖縄口, and they are compatible which means they are under the same writing system and both of them are used for the names of this language(while such a situation do not exist in Japanese as the naming is unified and using kana to write the name is rarely seen). Therefore originally I think both of them can be used as the naming, but if is not allowed, then there's no way. Another question I want to ask is about the font types. Since a different font is used in the Japanese Wikipedia, can it also be applied to the Okinawan Wikipedia project? 墜星璃月 (talk) 03:26, 24 July 2022 (UTC)

Remove the GeoCrumbs extension from Incubator
Hello all,
There is a MediaWiki extension installed here called mw:Extension:GeoCrumbs. It is supposed to add a trail of "breadcrumbs" below the page title to Wikivoyage pages using the magic word
. However, if a page is a subpage, it will show links to the pages it is a subpage of instead. Since all content pages on the Incubator are technically subpages (of index pages like Wp/anp), the effect is that the extension just duplicates the built-in links to subpages that MediaWiki already produces.
Therefore I would like to remove the extension from the Wikimedia Incubator, since it doesn't actually serve any useful purpose here. Please let us know if you agree or disagree with this suggestion, since we need to show community consensus in order to make that change (I have already posted a task about it in Phabricator: phab:T316109). Jon Harald Søby (talk) 13:09, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- Support, the extension is useless now. --MF-W {a, b} 13:59, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- Jon, you actually do this work, so maybe I'm just too ignorant here, but doesn't having the extension here help when it's moved to a new subdomain? E.g. local users here will include IsPartOf templates and that leaves the functionality baked in when the new wiki is launched? —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 17:30, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- If users are including these templates now, when they have no effect, I think we can expect them to continue to include them later, when they have no effect. -- MF-W {a, b} 10:50, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, what MF-W said.
- Also, the side-effect of having this extension here is noticeable on every single page in the content namespace – not only Wikivoyages – in that we get "double links" to the "base pages" (e.g. to Wp and Wp/anp for any pages in the Angika Wikipedia) below the title, so it doesn't really add any value. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:42, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- If users are including these templates now, when they have no effect, I think we can expect them to continue to include them later, when they have no effect. -- MF-W {a, b} 10:50, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- Update: It turns out that actually is working as intended on Wikivoyage pages. I checked before I posted the messages above (including, of course, on Wikivoyage pages that actually use it), and it wasn't working at the time. However, there have been a few updates to the extension in the meantime, so it may be that those fixed it. Either way, I will withdraw this proposal to remove the extension from the Incubator, and work on alternative ways to solve the issue with double subpage links. Thanks to Veracious for making me aware it was working. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 08:58, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
- Happy to help.🙂 Veracious (talk) 14:38, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
New gadget for interwiki links on test Wiktionaries
A few days ago, I enabled a new gadget here that helps with interwiki links for Wiktionaries. On real Wiktionary projects, interwiki links are handled automatically by something called Cognate – what that does is that it automatically links to other Wiktionary editions about words with the same spelling as the page you're on. The new gadget, which was made by Nikki (with some additions by myself), replicates this here on the Wikimedia Incubator. It will not link to other languages in the Incubator, but it will link to existing Wiktionary editions.
The gadget is enabled by default for everyone – if you wish to turn it off, you can do so in your preferences. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 16:01, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for adding this gadget, it is really very helpful. I was wondering how to link it to other language Wiktionary, if the same title doesn't exist but their meaning is exactly same (आम and ᱩᱞ have same meaning Mango). How to link them ?? ᱩᱞ Only shows English Wiktionary pagelink. or the only way is to go to Hindi Wiktionary and create a page with ᱩᱞ as title. Thanks Rocky 734 (talk) 15:24, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Rocky 734: Interwiki links in Wiktionary purely reflect spelling, without any consideration about the meanings of words. This is a necessity because of the way Wiktionary pages are built – you have multiple languages on the same page, so a page doesn't have a meaning. Take, for instance, wikt:en:barn, which has entries for several languages with radically different meanings. Even within the same language, one word may mean several different things, of course.
- So, yes, the only way to add an interwiki link to the Hindi Wiktionary from Wt/sat/ᱩᱞ would be to create an entry for "ᱩᱞ" in the Hindi Wiktionary. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 01:29, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
New gadget for interwiki links in general
Since I posted the message above, that gadget has been merged with a new gadget (now also enabled by default) I've been developing, as some of you have noticed. It lets you add the new INTERWIKI
template to articles semi-automatically when you click the "Add interlanguage links" or "Add Wikidata link" link in the sidebar. When you do, a dialog opens that lets you add a Wikidata item directly, or a link to an existing article in a Wikimedia project, or just an old-style interwiki link (like "en:Something"), and the interwiki template will be added to the article. The gadget also enables the "In other projects" links in the sidebar. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 15:38, 30 September 2022 (UTC)

Category sorting
Hello all,
This week, a change to the Wikimedia Incubator extension (that supports the extra features here on the Wikimedia Incubator) went live. The change makes it so that all pages that are part of a test wiki are automatically sorted by the actual page title, and not by the prefix. Before this change, the page "Wp/xxx/Something" would be sorted under "W" in categories, because the page name technically begins with "W". Now, however, this page will be sorted under "S", because that is the actual page name for the page.
Many test wikis circumvented this behaviour by specifying sort keys in articles manually, as or (or by just using the first letter from the article name). In the past 24 hours, my bot has been going through these articles and removing these sort keys since they are no longer necessary (I'm sorry if this has caused any disruption). The bot has only removed sort keys if the sort key was identical to the page name (sans prefix) or if it was identical to the first letter of the page name (again, sans prefix). Any sort key that was not identical to the page name or the first letter have been preserved.
Please let me know if you have any questions. :-) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 06:47, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Jon Harald Søby: Heads up that your mw link
iswas broken, but I created a redirect at mw. Does this extension understand alphabetical sorting concerns for individual languages? E.g. does it know that in Spanish <Ñ> is a different letter from <N> but <Í> and <I> are identical? —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 06:57, 29 September 2022 (UTC)- @Koavf: Thanks for fixing the link!
- No, unfortunately language-dependent sorting is something that can only be set for an entire wiki, not for individual categories. But once a wiki is approved and gets its own domain, that type of sorting is possible as long as the correct settings are set in the language's MessagesXxx.php file. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 07:14, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thinking out loud, does that mean that some sorting should be retained on here? Just trying to figure out if your bot may remove things that should be kept... I think not, but internationalization is hard. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 07:21, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Koavf: No, my bot has only removed sort keys where the sort key would lead to the exact same result* as sorting by the real pagename (i.e. "Wp/xxx/This part"). If there was any difference whatsoever between the real pagename and the sort key (like sorting Ö as Oe or Ŋ as ng, the sort key was left alone.
- (* Well, in the cases where only the first letter was used the software would actually sort it as sortkey+full pagename; so on a page "Wp/xxx/Something" would have been sorted by the software as "SWp/xxx/Something", leading "Wp/xxx/Something" to be sorted after "Wp/xxx/Sully" if the latter page had no sortkey. This is, of course, not desirable, which is a good reason to remove those even if the result wasn't exactly the same.) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 07:33, 29 September 2022 (UTC)

- I apologize for the limitation in our current configuration. It is not possible to set up specific configurations for individual test wikis at this time. This would require Live draw sgp special handling in the Citoid and/or Visual Editor extensions, which would be a complex task. However, I will keep your suggestion in mind as it would certainly be useful to have the ability to customize configurations for individual test wikis. Thank you for your feedback. 182.2.74.46 15:11, 20 December 2022 (UTC)
I have opened the above RFC on Meta, which would affect every Incubator wiki that got its own domain. Rschen7754 03:54, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
Help with configuring Citoid on our Incubator (Wp/ibb)
Hello, I will like to enable Citoid on our Incubator (Wp/ibb) as explained at- https://mediawiki.org/wiki/Citoid/Enabling_Citoid_on_your_wiki and a copy of Visual Editor Citation tool from the English Wikipedia at- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Visualeditor-cite-tool-definition.json
We need to configure it so that editors working on the wiki can easily add citations without stress.
I've tried configuring it, but I received a message that I didn't have permission to do so. Looking forward to your assistance. Best, Nnadigoodluck (talk) 02:21, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Nnadigoodluck! Unfortunately it is not possible to configure this on a per-test wiki basis. Any configuration we add following that guide would apply to the entire Incubator, not a single test wiki. Having different configuration per test wiki is not trivial – I believe it would require some special handling in the Citoid and/or Visual Editor extensions, so that makes it quite difficult unfortunately. But I will keep it in mind, as it would clearly be useful and beneficial for test wikis to be able to use this functionality. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:25, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

I think we need this extension here on Incubator, as one of the most major Wikivoyage-related extensions. Is this a correct place to ask for enabling new extensions, or is there a more proper procedure to it? -Vipz (talk) 07:40, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Vipz: This is indeed the correct place to ask. However, the extension will not work out-of-the-box (by using Wikidata properties) here on Incubator, because pages aren't technically connected to Wikidata the way they are in normal Wikivoyage projects (which is why we need the
INTERWIKI
template+gadget to mimic the interwiki functionality). - I could try to make a template that mimics its functionality though, that would automatically be replaced by the magic word from the extension when a project is approved and gets its own domain, but it will take some time. New update RUINS the Zealandic Wiktionary Main Page, please fix ASAP!
Hi, I'm really a fan of many recent adaptations to the code. However, there is one thing that absolutely drives me insane. It has recently become impossible to link categories. You know, on other wikis using MediaWiki software, you can link categories by inserting :Category:Blah. The colon in the beginning prevents the page from being categorized; instead, a plain link to the category will appear.
However, I just tried to update the Main Page of the Zealandic Wiktionary (Wt/zea/Vòblad). It makes extensive use of such links. All of these have now been ruined by automatic prefixing, making the Main Page almost worthless. And what's worse: I can't restore it or the same erroneous links will be re-added automatically. So please, please, can you revert the code change that made this monstrosity possible? Steinbach (talk) 23:54, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Steinbach: I have removed all those prefixes for you. I believe a solution for this problem would be disabling the AddPrefix gadget in your preferences ;) Iohanen (João) (talk) 01:24, 1 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you very much. I must say this gadget comes in handy most of the time, but of course I can turn it off temporarily when editing the Main Page. On the other hand, this issue has arisen quite recently, so this might be something the developers want to take into account. Steinbach (talk) 08:56, 1 December 2022 (UTC)
- You're welcome! And yup, it has arisen recently (I believe after the last problem [the one in which the gadget would add | to links] was corrected). Maybe @Jon Harald Søby can fix it, I believe he did the last update on it, but not really sure. Iohanen (João) (talk) 10:51, 1 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Steinbach: Thanks for reporting! "The developers" is just me on my spare time, so I'd appreciate nicer phrasing than "made this monstrosity possible". That said, this was obviously an accident, and I think I have fixed it now – if you notice anything else, don't hesitate to post about it here. I test every change thoroughly, but there are still bound to be some things I didn't think to test, so I need to know about errors if I am to fix them. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 10:59, 1 December 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry, I missed something, it should be okay now. You may need to do a hard refresh for the changes to take effect immediately (by doing Ctrl+Shft+F5 or the equivalent in your browser). Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:12, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

- @Steinbach: No worries! :-) And again, please report any errors you find in the gadget (or any other gadget, or in the WikimediaIncubator extenison, or anything at all really) here so we can try to fix them. My hope is that we will make it as easy to contribute to the Incubator as it is to contribute to any other wiki, without all these special adaptions we have (prefixes, test wikis, etc.) getting in the way. Why does this look the way it looks
Okay, I know damn well that you aren't a free markup service, but I have a problem that you might be able to fix sooner than I. I just created Template:Wt/zea/Swadeshliesten, to be used for navigation through the various Swadesh lists at the Zealandic Wiktionary. I decided to add work-in-progress signs to each link, for these lists definitely aren't all blue and ready for use. But here it comes: it looks very strange. The links appear on top of each other and except for the first one, they are in true type, even though I used neither a break nor a tt tag.
I have created similar templates with the same borrowed wiki code for almost twenty years now, and this never occurred before. The cause appears to be in the Work-in-Progress templates, but they contain nothing but a simple file and a description between "noinclude" tags. I just can't see what the cause is, let alone the solution. So I hope some of you can. Steinbach (talk) 12:37, 10 December 2022 (UTC)
- @User:Steinbach: The noinclude-tag started on a new line, which was the cause of that. I fixed it for you with a br-tag. --OWTB (talk) 16:16, 10 December 2022 (UTC)

Simple English ISO 639 Code
Hello, and I was thinking of maybe starting a test Wikiproject here in Basic English (known as Simple English on Wikiprojects) for WikiVoyage. However, I looked over the manual to creating a test project and it says that I need a valid ISO 639 code for the language to start a test project, and Basic English doesn't have one. But there are certainly Wikiprojects in Basic English, so what should I do? Thanks! Helloheart (talk) 22:41, 14 December 2022 (UTC)
- Great point. First off, the Simple English projects have no explicit definition of what constitutes "simple English", whereas "Basic English" does have an explicit corpus. Secondly, simple projects would not get approved today because we have different standards. Finally, the kind of English used in a travel guide should be fairly basic anyway, so it's not obvious that there is a need for a separate version. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 00:01, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- Yes; there are many Wikimedia projects in languages/language codes that wouldn't be approved today, and Simple English is one of them. The projects that existed before the language proposal policy are grandfathered in, but further projects in those languages will likely not be approved unless they meet the current criteria.
