Blocking VOA

This user is Vandalism-only account, who was also indef'ed on en.wikivoyage too. Maybe xwiki vandalism? — revi^ 16:12, 3 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Is it necessary to block and to delete the translations made by this user? --MF-W {a, b} 23:46, 3 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Block is necessary (or see m:SRG) and yes, please delete them. — revi^ 01:54, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I see the account is now locked. I will delete/revert these translations. --MF-W {a, b} 00:03, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello!

I want to create a Wikipedia with "orv" code. It is the Russian language, that was used in the Russian Empire before 1918. How can I get it? Ilya Drakonov (talk) 12:08, 26 March 2015 (UTC).[reply]

It would be necessary for it to have an own ISO code and be a living language, unfortunately. --MF-W {a, b} 17:55, 14 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

administrator abuse

User:Ibrahim khashrowdi (test-sysop in Incubator) blocked one of fa-wiki sysop (Fatemi) for 1 year with the funny reason (Spam/Advertising)[1]. Fatemi just had 1 edit in the past year and was inactive in incubator but User:Ibrahim khashrowdi has problem with him in fa-wiki and block his account here !! please remove his adminship access and block him for abuse of admin access. -- ARASH PT  talk  11:38, 5 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

He unblocked him after I wrote this in noticeboard, but I don't think he is qualified for test-sysop or any access in incubator. -- ARASH PT  talk  12:00, 5 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the notice. We will monitor the situation. Please inform us again if he blocks another editor. Thanks! --Hydriz (talk) 17:24, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Request to suspend WKDx417's test-adminship.

Greetings. WKDx417 had recently used his test-admin power to block Gmaildamn, but I looked through Gmaildamn's history on Wikimedia Incubator and found out that Gmaildamn never violated any Incubator Policy — In fact, Gmaildamn never contributed to the Incubator and WKDx417 had specified in the block log that he blocked Gmaildamn only because he doesn't like User:Gmaildamn's certain behaviours on Cantonese Wikipedia (Please refer to this message on Shinjiman's talk page), which has nothing to with the Wikimedia Incubator. In a later response, WKDx417 argued that Gmaildamn was guilty of two previous acts of vandalism on Cantonese Wikipedia (this and this), but I went through the deletion log on Cantonese Wikipedia and couldn't verify whether Gmaildamn actually created the "Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuck" (though he was likely to be behind "唔畀人身攻擊"). In light of this severe abuse of power, I hereby request that WKDx417's test-adminship be suspended. Thanks for your time. 【粵語文學大使殘陽孤侠粵維辭典起錨! 05:18, 11 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. You are right that WKDx417 should not have blocked Gmaildamn. Test-adminship should only be used for the test wiki itself, and the block right should only be used by test-admins in emergencies, and certainly not because of something that happened on another wiki. That said, it appears to be a one time mistake so I don't think the removal of his rights are needed, as long as it does not happen again. @WKDx417, it would be nice if you could confirm you understand you should not have blocked Gmaildamn and that you know when to use your user rights. Thanks, SPQRobin (talk) 23:59, 11 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
SPQRobin, I hope this was a one-time mistake, too, and if I end up being the only one supporting the suspension, I will not make another request unless something like this happens again. 【粵語文學大使殘陽孤侠粵維辭典起錨! 00:48, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Request to preëmptively block sock-puppets of active cross-wiki vandaliser User:影武者

While I understand that preëmptive blocking is not a thing at Wikimedia Incubator, this cross-wiki long-time vandaliser called User:影武者 has recently moved from Chinese Wikipedia to Cantonese Wikipedia and renewed his relentless attack on User:Lanwi11 with new sock-puppets with very provocative names like "支那賤畜蘭維一仇視猶太人" (lit. "Low-born Chink ork Lanwi11 hates Jews."), "蘭維一想插山口理子的陰道" (lit. "Lanwi11 wants to bang Rina Nakanishi in her vagina."), etc.. Based on his pattern of vandalism, it would be only a matter of time for him to spread his vandalism to the Incubator. Therefore, I would like to ask for the Admins' consensus on indefinitely blocking all sock-puppets of User:影武者 even if they had made zero edits on the Incubator. Thank you for your time. 【粵語文學大使殘陽孤侠粵維辭典起錨! 16:49, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You are right, we don't have a policy of pre-emptive blocking. I rather we wait and see if the user causes trouble here, and it would also be great to ping the stewards if that happens. --Hydriz (talk) 12:54, 20 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Possible vandalism on Community Portal

I just reverted some vandalism on the community portal. I can't tell whether this was actually done by the user whose address appears in the history, or whether that account was hijacked. Someone may wish to check. StevenJ81 (talk) 18:32, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think it was just an issue with the user when saving the page, which accidentally removed a large section of the text. If it happens again, please notify us here. Thanks! --Hydriz (talk) 00:57, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think you might have to add an IP block at 172.56.8.43 for Casette TapeMaster. (I guess in theory I have the tools to do it now, but I don't think I'm supposed to unless he appears on one of my projects, or unless you say, "I'm going away for a week; keep an eye on things".) StevenJ81 (talk) 14:12, 14 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't block the IP as he only made 3 edits with it. I didn't check, but guess it's a dynamic IP, and if/when he tries to edit again, he'll have another one. --MF-W {a, b} 22:16, 14 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

limit the creation of test projects (for example, wp/xyz)

please only let admins create test wiki info pages, therefore, users must request at this page instead. there was a user blocked recently because of the massive creation of nonsense test wiki info pages, including those that don't have a valid iso 639-3 code, and the codes reserved for local use. thank you, please correct me if i'm wrong. theofficial005 (talk) 12:23, 19 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, this happened. However that was a single user. I don't think the fuss to force people to go to I:RFT is justifiable. Most info-pages are created out of good faith and it should be as easy as possible to start a test. --MF-W {a, b} 20:45, 19 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Template:User SUL Box

Hi. I created a neutral version of Template:User SUL Box. It is located at User:StevenJ81/User SUL Box, but I really intend it to be an unprefixed template for use on userpages on Incubator. (The default home account in this version is Incubator.) I don't think I'm allowed to create unprefixed templates, so perhaps one of you would be willing to move it. Thanks. (PS: I've separately created prefixed versions for my three projects, but since this template goes on userpages, there should really be an unprefixed one available.) StevenJ81 (talk) 18:05, 29 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I must say I don't really see the purpose of this template. All accounts on Wikimedia wikis are global nowadays, so the template is equivalent to one saying "This user is a user". Also, with global notifications nowadays one doesn't even need to give a principal account anymore for easy contacting, as people see it everywhere when they get a talk page message on one wiki. And the "home wiki" is already removed from the display at Special:CentralAuth and Special:Preferences for quite some time. --MF-W {a, b} 15:56, 30 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Not to worry, then. I'm in the habit of identifying myself on my userpages with this template, and thought others might be, too. I suppose one reason to do so is that if one's home wiki userpage is more informative than one's global userpage, there is an easy link there. But if you prefer, I can simply leave this as a personal subpage. StevenJ81 (talk) 16:15, 30 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I dont feel too strongly against it. I suppose some other users might want to use it too, so it can well be in the template NS. I'll move it. --MF-W {a, b} 10:37, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

User page and talk page for Future Perfect at Sunrise

Background: See Incubator:Community Portal/Archive/2016#Protect user talk please.

This user page and user talk page have been subject to periodic recreation for purposes of vandalism. The user has made it clear that he is not a contributor here and has no plans to be. At one point the user talk page was semi-protected. At this point, I think the two pages should be create-protected. User:Future Perfect at Sunrise is an experienced contributor to other wikis; if he ever wants to have the pages created, I'm sure he knows how to get a creation protection lifted. British English Wikipedia

Hey I can not start the main page because of the (-) in wp/en-gb please advice me Trunzep (talk) 18:02, 11 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Test-projects can only be started in languages with ISO 639-1 or -3 codes because others don't have the chance to get approved by Langcom anyway. Exceptions would have to be declared eligible by Langcom beforehand, otherwise it's wasted effort. And en-gb surely has no chances of being made eligible, sorry. --MF-W {a, b} 22:32, 11 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
English Wikipedia is written partly in British English or variants and partly in American English or variants (and, as far as it goes, occasionally in "International English"). So there is no chance that there would ever be a separate British English Wikipedia. Just because the US and UK are "two countries divided by a common language", it doesn't mean we need two different Wikipedias. StevenJ81 (talk) 17:49, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

There's nothing wrong with the content he or she is writing. Noongar is I believe only spoken fluently by 300 - 400 people, but a lot more people have some degree of exposure to it and speak English as a first language. The idea, again IMHO, is to rescue the language. So some Noongar are learning their language as a second language and the Nongarpedia is a resource to help the community recover their language and record their stories. Given appropriate resources I think more would want to learn their language. Aarghdvaark (talk) 14:55, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I need any administrator to create Mediawiki:Wy/ja/Common.css in order to add CSS styles for the overall Japanese Wikivoyage incubator. Specifically, to add code for Pagebanner template, improve Main page and some other standard templates in Wikivoyages.

Could this be done by @import "//incubator.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=wy/ja/common.css&action=raw&ctype=text/css";", or it should be done by adding the code directly?. --Zerabat (talk) 00:13, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Items that came up during maintenance activities

Fellow admins, to "earn my stripes" I've undertaken some maintenance activities in order to try to get us caught up on a few things. Yet a number of items have come up over the course of this where I could use some guidance. Rather than clog the noticeboard, I will place them on the noticeboard talk page for discussion. Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:27, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I will comment on these later. However, I think they would quite rightly be placed on this page, as it doesn't really have high traffic and can very well be used as a discussion page. The talk page for this page and for I:CP doesn't really serve a purpose. --MF-W {a, b} 12:27, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Fine. I'll move them back over here. And thank you for commenting on the particulars when you have the chance. StevenJ81 (talk) 21:08, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Adding status "rejected" to {{Test wiki}}

Consistent with a future "to-do", I have modified {{Test wiki}} (actually {{Test wiki/core}}) so as to allow it to take the status rejected. I have changed only one root page (Wq/tgl) as an illustration, and as far as I can tell both it and all other combinations are working fine. Please feel free to check my work.

Note 1: I first tried to do this by creating a test version of the template, but although I am a sysop I was not able to create an unprefixed template. Am I doing something wrong?
Note 2: Since I did not see the appropriate messages on translatewiki, I assume these messages are stored only locally. (This makes sense; no other wiki needs them.) I stored them at MediaWiki:Testwiki-title-rejected and MediaWiki:Testwiki-text-rejected. So far they only exist in English; I don't know how one goes about getting translations done.
Note 3: To make this change I jerry-rigged class="testwiki testwiki-rejected" using a switch; if someone can create it that would undoubtedly be better.

I guess one question that remains is this: This covers the "reject-and-delete" option. In cases of "reject-but-keep" (for further work and resubmission), do we want a separate status for that, or should we simply leave it as "open"? I think the latter, but I'm open to suggestions. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:31, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I also made a gerrit change (must update it) to integrate it with the extension. Ebe123 (Talkabout it|contribs) 21:48, 13 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Merci. The more I have been working on this, the more I think that tests that are rejected for improvement, but could still be approved someday under the rules, should simply remain "open". "Rejected" can be reserved for those items that are always going to be inappropriate. I think that is consistent with the language you put in the gerrit change. StevenJ81 (talk) 22:11, 13 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Done I've taken this forward, marking tests as "rejected" only where the LC rejected them and where it seems unlikely that further work on the test will change its mind. Further comments are welcome. StevenJ81 (talk) 21:47, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm very surprised that the status "rejected" didn't exist in the template before. The addition seems sensible to me. Of course some cases are covered by invalid & rejected, like Wp/surzh, which makes me wonder whether "invalid" couldn't also be abolished: the only use case for it now seems to be pages precisely like Wp/surzh which come from the early time of Incubator when the requirement of an ISO code wasn't as strictly enforced yet. And I think these can now mostly be deleted, the deletion reason will suffice as an explanation. - The messages are only here indeed; TWN only has some from the extension for the auto-info-pages. We could add these new ones to Incubator:Translation_project#Translatable_pages. - I also updated the documentation at Incubator:Policy/Test wiki info page.
I agree that "reject-and-keep" tests can be left as open, precisely because they should be improved. That said, do we have any such tests at the moment? --MF-W {a, b} 02:06, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
First, I'm going to distinguish between the status of the code and the status of the test. Nothing wrong the status of the code being "invalid", of course.
Here's where I think it's reasonable to keep the status of the test being "invalid code": In principle, as long as someone opens a request to the LC at Meta, then if the LC rejects it, it gets the status of "rejected". If, on the other hand, we decide here on Incubator to delete a test directly on the grounds of "invalid code", the test was never rejected by the LC, so its status is really not "rejected". Instead, its status is "closed on the grounds of invalid code". What's more: Assuming such a thing had legitimate content, and that we archived an XML file somewhere, we'd want to leave that status in place so people would know that. (If we just delete something with no material content, I'd leave the status in place for 1-3 months, then just delete it.)
Side note: is there a list of available XML files somewhere? Maybe the list should be posted. And I was thinking that the right way to make them available is to create a new namespace here (Archive:?) and upload them like we would in the File: space.
I'm pretty sure I ran across at least one "reject-and-keep" example, though I don't recall what it was. I've only gone through items that had a suboptimal status, like codes that are invalid, lower, etc., so I don't know what else we have open here. At some point I'll start going through the "rejected" list on Meta and see if any of those tests still seem open and active here. Also, the project "Wt/mul" could fall in that category, if we choose to allow it to stay open as an exception to the rules. (Whether we need to, in the face of projects like OmegaWiki, I don't really know.) StevenJ81 (talk) 15:07, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There is no list of XML files. Some are on my hard disk. Others, I recall, were posted by User:Hydriz to archive.org? - The idea to upload XML files has been around before (they would simply be uploaded into the File namespace btw). I don't remember if there was anything that spoke against it. --MF-W {a, b} 12:21, 20 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I really think the XML files should be uploaded to some WMF project server. (Commons would be ok, I guess, although I think Incubator would be a more appropriate location.) Suppose something happened to you or your hard drive? Would content be lost forever? (I'm fine with using the File namespace; I'm just sensitive to all those folks over on Meta who like to see empty File namespaces. But, of course, this content is free content by definition.) StevenJ81 (talk) 15:56, 20 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It's of course true that the files are ideally online and not on my computer only. The content wouldn't be lost however, as deleted pages here can simply be restored. --MF-W {a, b} 14:14, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Request for deletion of superfluous redirects on nl-wikinews

Hello, can you please delete the following redirects on nl-wikinews as they are no longer needed:

As nl-Wikinews is currently still in the Incubator phase, this cannot be done by a local sysop. Thanks! De Wikischim (talk) 14:34, 31 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, De Wikischim. Are you saying (essentially): these are old news and now obsolete? If so, I'm happy to take care of it. Usually, you can just tag any such pages with {{delete}}, and they will go into a maintenance category for deletion; one of us will handle as a routine matter in the following day or two.
We do have a user group here called "Test administrator". Someone in that user group receives a limited portion of the administrator tools, including the ability to delete pages within his/her specific test. If you are interested in learning more, or in applying, see I:A. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:53, 31 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi StevenJ81, the news reports are not (yet) obsolete as such, but these titles were not (completely) right so the articles have been renamed afterwards. De Wikischim (talk) 16:06, 31 January 2017 (UTC) So it is only these redirects which should be the deleted, not the pages themselves! De Wikischim (talk) 16:09, 31 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Done OK. Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 17:14, 31 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please create Template:ISBN

See w:en:Template:ISBN/w:en:Module:Check isxn Currently, there are 342 pages in Category:Pages using ISBN magic links. Hard-coded magic links have been turned off by default in MediaWiki and this template provides a solution for linking to Special:Booksources as well as checking the sums of ISBNs (invalid numbers will have their own tracking category. This also applies to the PMID and RFC magic links which can be solved more easily with their entries at m:Interwiki map (simply convert "RFC XXX" to "[[rfc:XXX|RFC XXX]]"). —Justin (koavf)TCM 00:36, 6 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This probably requires further discussion. For something like this, we would usually encourage each test wiki to build a solution that suits its needs. Personally, my concern with Lua module-based solutions is that there is often an infrastructure of several modules that all need to be imported — and if the test wiki community doesn't know how to manage that infrastructure, then it will have a problem when the test gets moved to a standalone subdomain. So I'd ask two questions here.
  • First: Would this require the importation of any modules other than the one you identified up top?
  • Second: How does this approach compare to the more traditional approach available, for example, at simple:Template:ISBN?
The other problem with an approach like this is that we normally don't allow centralized (non-prefixed) templates and modules here at all within test projects. The only non-prefixed templates and modules here are those used in managing the Incubator itself (or on user pages). We'd have to decide how to address that problem, too.
I'm open to suggestions from others. StevenJ81 (talk) 02:02, 6 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@StevenJ81: I realize that there are few global templates (e.g. {{Delete}} or {{Ping}} or even {{tl}}, which is the first time that I've typed that). But this functionality will be spread across all test projects here--MediaWiki isn't going to discriminate between a Basque Wikivoyage or an Avestan Wiktionary. One solution is to copy-paste it to every test project but that seems cumbersome and it would require updating across [x] templates if anything changes. Regarding w:simple:Template:ISBN, that isn't used on that project. The upside of this module-based approach versus a more stripped-down template or the hard-coded magic link is that this validates the checksum digits. And I didn't mention it but this applies to ISSNs and other ISO identifiers as well. —Justin (koavf)TCM 02:24, 6 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Just to clarify: Templates which you call "global" are in fact local for Incubator use (ie. in Help: or Incubator: or User( talk): namespaces) while you have to have their prefixed copy/clone to use them in any test wiki (ie. in main, Template, Module and Category namespaces and their talks). You can not use ie. {{Tl}} in any test wiki (aka on any prefixed page) without getting an error message. Proper prefixing is the crucial mechanism of Incubator and can not be evaded. Please create your prefixed copy of any template or module you need to make them work and don't forget to properly attribute the source (URL of the permalink of the original placed in the summary). Should you have any further questions or need any help, please let me know.
Danny B. 17:37, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
{{Delete}} is an exception to that rule, since the expectation is that the page would be deleted while the test is still in Incubator—and it places the page in an Incubator-wide deletion category. But {{Ping}} and {{tl}} (cute) are exactly as Danny described. StevenJ81 (talk) 19:54, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
' Not done I think we're going to close this as "not done" for now. What you are requesting makes sense at a certain level. But for the moment we're going to let each individual test project decide the best way to deal with this issue for itself, given the time and skills its members possess. If we get to a point where many projects are actively using this approach, we'll reconsider. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:34, 7 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Desirability to keep test wiki root pages when the tests are empty (and perhaps placed by vandals)

One thing I have been doing has been to clean up after User:CasetteTapeMaster. That person left literally hundreds of root pages for empty tests behind. Part of the question is whether it's worthwhile to delete them (provided, of course, that they represent valid codes, which many do).

  • Where the code is valid but the language is extinct (history), I have been deleting, since such languages are inconsistent with the language creation policy.
  • Where the code is valid but not what we're using (usually lower or special), I'm typically redirecting.
  • Where the code is invalid, I'm usually deleting. But occasionally the language named has a valid code, and then if there is an active test I redirect; otherwise, I delete. (I am adding invalid codes to {{Test wiki/validcode}}.)

But how do you see handling this when the code is valid?

  • In a couple of cases, people have actually started a test. As long as it seems legitimate, that's fine.
  • In other cases, as long as the status is tocreate, the pages don't get in anyone's way. But while in some situations I think there are enough speakers that a future test is possible, particularly for Wikipedia, in others that is highly doubtful. So my instinct says to delete these. But I wonder what you think. (I deleted a bunch created in March 2016. I stopped at that point to get guidance.)

By the way, SPQRobin, the default pages that appear when root pages don't exist are broken. In all cases the Wikipedia link doesn't work right, and in some cases other links don't work right. And at least on my computer, in cases where the Wikipedia already exists (and existed before Incubator opened), the link to the Wikipedia is missing. Compare the non-pages Wp/el and Wt/el. Wp/el is missing the link to el.wikipedia.org; Wt/el includes the link to el.wiktionary.org, but the link to Greek Wikipedia doesn't work. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:50, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's alright to delete these. They serve no purpose. The auto-info-page should be there anyway to help any users that might arrive.
The problem you describe is bug T117023. --MF-W {a, b} 02:13, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the bug reference. I think I can legitimately wait on deleting some of those pages until the auto-info-page bug is solved. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:09, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I see that for the most part this hasn't been used recently. So maybe you have other ways to clean these things up now. But I did create a tool, which for the moment resides at {{Wt/lad/Different code}}—again, this really belongs in unprefixed template space, but I don't seem to be able to get there. The idea behind this is that many of these pages are redirects to appropriately coded pages (because of "lower" or "special"), but then show up on the maintenance list because they have neither {{Test wiki}} nor a version of {{Code-disambig}} on them. So I created a derivative of {{Code-disambig}} which is intended to go on such redirect pages. Under normal circumstances no one will ever see these, but they exist for the record "just in case". I placed it on one such page as an example: Look at Wp/inj. If you like this idea, then please move it to an unprefixed place (or teach me how to do so). If not, I'll get rid of it. StevenJ81 (talk) 16:20, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You can get to the un-prefixed space by changing your test wiki in the preferences to "Incubator" (for me "(Maintenance)"). I like your idea. Ebe123 (Talkabout it|contribs) 21:56, 13 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Ebe123: Thank you for your support on the idea. Note: I changed my preference to (Maintenance), but then the system would only let me create the page in the Project: (Incubator:) namespace, not as an unprefixed page in the Template: namespace. StevenJ81 (talk) 22:06, 13 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It requires some more maneuvering; I change the namespace from the URL. I moved the template. Ebe123 (Talkabout it|contribs) 03:34, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. There isn't really a manual on this, and I didn't think to do that. And you do have to have your test set to (Maintenance), or it doesn't work. But when I did just what you suggested, it worked fine.
Also, "Move" wasn't working right for me before. But I did a test move just now (using a template on my test wiki, Wt/lad, moving it to unprefixed Template space, then reversing the move), and it worked just fine. Go figure. Anyway, j'apprécie ton aide. Merci. StevenJ81 (talk) 04:47, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Done I split this into {{Different code/project}} and {{Different code/test}}, with some further documentation available at {{Different code}}. StevenJ81 (talk) 21:48, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The pages isn't updated (anymore|at the moment), but I don't think there is any other way in which someone kept track of such pages. I never particularly minded that some pages with only an explanation appeared on that list, but a template is of course a more "clean" approach.
1) Different_code/project: I moved it to /subdomain for clarity (as test-wikis are also sometimes called test-projects). Maybe in the future {{test wiki}} will have support for referring to a subdomain with a different code, then Different_code/subdomain would become superfluous. But as long as the Incubator extension isn't actively developed that won't happen. So this template makes sense.
I added the information that existed at Wp/gsw, Wp/pes and Wp/lzh into the template, in order not to have one template supply a link and one an explanation for why this is.
2) For Different_code/test, I wonder about what it's useful for. Hardly anyone will even see it, as everyone is immediately redirected and nowadays the URL shown in the browser changes to the redirect target as well, so it's not that easy to go back to the ?redirect=no page to see the template. And it doesn't have a parameter which would allow adding information about why this redirect is there. So it seems to me that the problem would be easier solved by excluding redirects from the Maintenance page. Except if there are any redirects which actually would benefit from not being redirects, but explanations why a different test should be used; but even then it might be preferable to add such information on the target page, below {{test wiki}}. Or is there another problem which I'm not seeing?
3) I added all the "templates which can be put on infopages" to I:Teststatus, which so far was only the documentation for {{test wiki}}. I think we should add some lines about how to use them there as well (I think having one documentation about using all "templates which can be put on infopages" might have been the reason for why {{test wiki}} uniquely has its documentation in the Incubator namespace). [Edit: That is right, as the history of the page just reminded me. It is because formerly there was a template for each status, like {{open}} and {{conditional}}, and they were all documented there]
--MF-W {a, b} 02:51, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Re {{Different code/test}}, I mainly had in mind (a) consistency and (b) my thought that the search paradigm for the maintenance page depended on having a template there. We could, of course, simply skip pages that have a redirect. But there's something that tells me that it's better to leave behind explicit evidence that the redirect was placed purposefully (like using one of the {{R ...}} templates. I do agree that detailed explanatory details are better left on the target page than on the redirect page. StevenJ81 (talk) 16:53, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
By the way ... that page is now clean, except for:
  • The example (Wp/xyz)
  • A couple of items that are struck out, but are left there to remind MF-Warburg (talk | contribs) that they may need action from the LC and/or Stewards.
  • A Kashmiri test project; please see the notes there.
Otherwise, if someone knows how to run a search to regenerate this page, I'd appreciate that. StevenJ81 (talk) 00:27, 19 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Closed projects never imported to Incubator

Hi, all:

As I've been continuing to do maintenance tasks here and at the LangCom section of Meta, I noticed that the following two projects' contents were never imported here:

@MF-Warburg, you were the closing LangCom member in both cases. As I look at phabricator:T78667, I don't see any sign that a decision was made not to import them here. It just appears that it was never done. That said, both discussions suggested that the respective contents were mostly meaningless—that worthwhile content from Old English probably belonged in Wikisource, and worthwhile content in Interlingue in Wiktionary. So do you have a sense of what happened? By policy, we should import them here, unless it was determined that neither had any worthwhile content. StevenJ81 (talk) 23:40, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing was done as nobody was interested in doing the separation between pages that should be moved here (if there are any) and pages that should be moved elsewhere (if there are any). --MF-W {a, b} 08:03, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please create global template {{ISBN}}

So we can get rid of magic words. Thanks. —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:02, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Magic words aren't going to disappear so fast, if ever, notwithstanding the RfC on enwiki. And I personally oppose their disappearing. But if you feel strongly about this, create a template at {{Wp/qdp/ISBN}} and I will globalize it. StevenJ81 (talk) 11:14, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Utter nonsense, we don't want global templates for the content. --MF-W {a, b} 14:39, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The idea is that I would use {{Use prefixed copy}} while globalizing, to try to get people to create prefixed versions. But I don't favor this whole enterprise anyway. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:42, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@MF-Warburg: Why would a global template be a bad thing in this case? It's replacing hardcoded MediaWiki. We have a few such as {{Delete}} (or even {{tl}}), so why not this? —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:29, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Delete is the only one that doesn't throw error messages on a main space page. All the others are really designed for user, talk, and project pages. And if we create a global template, then the tests won't create local templates that would be exported at the time of approval. No, in general, global templates not for Incubator maintenance are a bad idea. StevenJ81 (talk) 20:55, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Okay but we'll need something to deal with the actual ISBN magic link errors that we have. The interiwiki map includes aliases for PMID and RFC but not ISBN/ISSN. —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:49, 16 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Can you show me a page that has one? Do we have a (created or uncreated) category for that? Honestly, if the only "error" is that a page uses a magic link, I'm inclined not to worry about it. (I found one page in the notional Category:Pages with ISBN errors, and that is because the ISBN is rendered in non-Arabic numerals. But I think that's the test's problem, not ours.) Hi, I am working on dty Wiktionary and to increase the number of article (words) I am planning for importing pages from file (using pywikibot), currently I am importing pages to ne Wiktionary. Is it possible to create and import pages to incubator project?--Nirajan pant (talk) 04:53, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'd need to let someone who is more knowledgeable about the technical side of things to respond. I will mention the following:
  • We are normally reluctant to allow bot creation of pages here on Incubator. Consider that even if we were to do so, there are two important items that would need to be true before Wt/dty would ever be approved:
    • A community needs to be working on the test, not just you.
    • Pages have to have substantive content.
  • For that reason, at very minimum, you need to provide a few very specific details here before we'd even consider it. In particular:
    • What do you want to import?
    • From where do you want to import?
    • Do you expect to end up with finished pages, or are you looking to import infrastructure that you can then build on?
Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 16:30, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have 2 or 3 Doteli word collection books in hand (in printed form). I have planned to reference those books and use my own experience to write articles for more than 1000 words. The articles will be finished pages which includes-
  • Parts of Speech
  • Meaning in Doteli language itself
  • Uses Example (for all words as far as possible)
  • Translation in Nepali and English
I think it would be easier to create some structured data (e.g. excel sheet) with the above sections so that I can use and revise it easily later. This is why I have asked for the possibility of importing.--Nirajan pant (talk) 04:31, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@MF-Warburg, Ooswesthoesbes, Danny B.: I don't have the expertise to take this further. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:53, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
.xls cannot be readily imported via Special:Import, so in this case it would be required to write a Python program and upload the pages per bot. While this would blow up the article count, it won't be very helpful for the project's approval. It seems that the amount of contents as described above would be as easy to be manually written compared to writing an xls-sheet, a python program and checking all pages manually (which is a requirement in my opinion). I would advise to simply create the pages one by one manually and concentrate on writing a few, large and complete pages with multiple translations, usage descriptions, grammar etc, than uploading 2.000 pages with just a little bit of information. --OWTB (talk) 16:54, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Hello903hello: A number of templates still point to the original (sandbox) location of this file. Please fix those so we can get rid of the redirect. Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 13:57, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wp/lkt new page inputbox

Could someone take a look at the new article inputbox on Wp/lkt/Main_Page and advise on how to get it working again? I recall that it worked previously, but the button no longer seems to respond to clicks. Thanks! --R12ntech (talk) 18:41, 26 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The current inputbox code works fine on a user page, but not on Wp/lkt/Main_Page. --R12ntech (talk) 11:15, 5 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Is all the coding prefixed, and are there prefixed versions of any routine you called? StevenJ81 (talk) 12:31, 5 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what "prefixed" means in this context -- inputbox is a mediawiki extension called with a bit of wiki code to generate a form. I couldn't find a solution, so I moved the inputbox to a lower-priority part of the page. It promptly started functioning, for a reason I still don't understand. I made a few further minor edits and will just leave it there. --R12ntech (talk) 15:30, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@R12ntech: I'm glad it worked. I think one issue (potentially) was that the "preload" and "editintro" you were trying to load would need to have been prefixed here; i.e., preload=Template:Wp/lkt/Standard content for new page and editintro=Template:Wp/lkt/Instructions. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:37, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@StevenJ81: Ah, I see, thanks! I thought that might be the case, but it didn't work even when I deleted those two lines completely. I tested stripping parameters all the way down to a bare
<inputbox> type=create </inputbox>
with no luck. Working now though, so good enough. --R12ntech (talk) 15:46, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Not necessarily, but I would like to know what all of that does and why it is needed before enabling it. --MF-W {a, b} 22:36, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see how this makes sense. Modules are in the Module namespace. --MF-W {a, b} 18:41, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@user:MF-Warburg: So, how can you explain why some infoboxes looks without borders and colour? Brahim-essaidi (talk) 19:26, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
CSS pages are required to make style changes of a template (or Module-produced template). Not sure if TemplateStyles are enabled, but TemplateStyles make it possible to do things without editing Common.css, tho I'm not sure. CKoerner and/or Jdforrester should know better than me. — regards, Revi 07:37, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
TemplateStyles are enabled on Incubator. You can create Template:Foo/styles.css and define your CSS rules from there (without having to edit common.css) More info on MediaWiki.org. CKoerner (WMF) (talk) 14:37, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Generally, I'm staying out of this, because I don't understand modules very well. Do the modules depend on css definitions that would be called from this MediaWiki-namespace file? StevenJ81 (talk) 13:58, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not even sure prefixed MediaWiki-pages work... --OWTB (talk) 14:56, 8 May 2018 (UTC) Never mind. Judging from this they do. --OWTB (talk) 15:00, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@StevenJ81: yes they do, check this for example Brahim-essaidi (talk) 18:07, 8 May 2018 (UTC)Q147258[reply]

Consultation requested

I'd like to ask fellow admins to look at Guianan Creole test, Wp/gcr. A core group of three has been working hard on this test for several months, and by the numbers, except for stub ratio, the test should be eligible.

Now, on the surface, the stub ratio remains very bad. They created well over 1,000 pages, and the majority are either stubs or barely populated list articles (like year articles). But we have asked this team to stop creating new pages and to start filling out the ones they had. It has been a slow process, but they have done that. Recently, they presented me with a list of 50 pages that they had filled out, and those pages (in my view) look good. And they are pages that are likely to be of particular interest to that language community, and that is good, too.

So where do we go? I am concerned that this group is going to run out of patience if we don't say yes soon. And I think they see the "content" question as having been a moving target, while everything else (activity requirement, interface translation, etc.) has been straightforward. They desperately want a specific target to work toward. I really think they've been doing the right thing, and we need to do something to recognize/reward that.

For the near future, the stub ratio is not going to become something we'd typically like to see unless a lot of stubs are deleted—and I certainly wouldn't favor that. At the same time, 50 good pages is a pretty shaky basis for a project approval. (These guys would be perfect candidates for Amir's incubation-space subdomains, but that's not ready to go yet.) I'd like to give them a hard target of a number of pages to fill out—say a second fifty—and if they do so we take them to LangCom.

What do people think? I'd appreciate input here. StevenJ81 (talk) 18:02, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help! Seereer

Hi everyone, can you please help me as per the discussion here by checking whether I have done this properly [4]? As stated in that discussion, new Wiki projects scare the day light out of me. I don't know where to start. That article is about the Seereer people. Also, how do I create other articles in this language in incubator? Thanks. Tamsier (talk) 16:47, 10 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Tamsier: Hi. As @Liuxinyu970226 mentioned to you, don't put any other content at the actual page Wp/srr. Name all of your pages starting with the prefix Wp/srr. Otherwise, you're doing fine. StevenJ81 (talk) 18:13, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much @StevenJ81:. I think I'm beginning to get the hang of it. I think. Thanks everyone for their help. Just one thing: I want to translate "category" into Seereer. Where do I go to do this so that the word for category in Seereer is used rather than the English word when adding cats? Tamsier (talk) 20:34, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
In the long run, you will need to translate the MediaWiki interface into Seereer at translatewiki.net:
  • Go there and create an account. It's not part of WMF wiki farm's SUL, so you'll have to create an account, even if you use the same user name.
  • Then go to translatewiki:Support and request (a) Seereer be activated there (if it's not already), and (b) that you be given Translator rights there.
  • Then start translating: I think that particular one is probably at translatewiki:MediaWiki:Category/srr, if it exists at all.
In the short run, use "Category" in English on Incubator. If and when your project is approved and turned into an independent project, that will come out translated in the independent project automatically. But it gets complicated to try to worry about Category, Template and Module namespaces while your project is here. StevenJ81 (talk) 20:47, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that Steven. Tamsier (talk) 22:30, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
