Incubator:Translation project

Languages In other languages (2.0)]]

The Incubator hosts Wikimedia projects in a variety of languages before they would be ready to launch independently. A part of our target audience might not understand English, but may speak another major language well enough. You can facilitate their work here by providing accurate translations. Machine translations are not allowed.

This is an overview of our translation efforts.

Goals[edit source]

We aim to translate interface elements and various project pages, such as our site-wide policies:

Exceptions:

  • Sometimes (as on Incubator:Administrators) policies and related discussions happen to be on the same page. The discussions themselves are not translated, but the descriptions on the top of these pages can be.
  • On community pages (such as on the Community Portal), we usually communicate in a world language. If your language community would have a question or request, you can step in as a middleman, and post it in a common language which has a better chance of being understood by others. This is not a translation project priority, but a gesture towards your fellow editors.
  • Your testproject can lay down its own policies on its own policy pages. Use prefixes to distinguish these from site-wide policies as described in: Help:FAQ#Prefix. This is a task of the testproject’s community, not a translation project issue.

Local translations[edit source]

As a rule of thumb, we store translations on subpages. A subpage title looks like this: namespace:pagename/code, so each partially of fully translated source page has subpages like this. The code is the corresponding ISO 639 code (also known here as prefix).

Translate extension[edit source]

We use the Translate extension to coordinate project page translations. With this we can:

  • fraction the English source text into bite-sized segments which are not that overwhelming to translate at once;
  • mark outdated translations if the source text changes;
  • allow certain edits in the MediaWiki namespace which is usually protected;
  • display an alternative (translated) title;
  • support translation review.

Translations created with this extension are stored in the Translations namespace. Each segment has its own language subpages: Translations:namespace:pagename/segmentnumber/code.

While reading a translated page:

  • segments appear continuously, following the layout on the source page;
  • not translated segments appear in their original language;
  • outdated ones are highlighted with a color.

Accessing the interface[edit source]

Translation administrators mark pages for translation through the extension.

You can access the interface via:

  • the marked pages themselves: click on “Translate this page”. The link appears on the top of the page, usually near the language menu;
  • Special:LanguageStats where you may find a list of marked pages by target language. Choose a language, then a page from the list to see its segments;
    • if your language code is invalid or you can’t choose it on the translation interface, consult the manual. There might be too many core messages missing, so your language might not appear. In this case, you will have to start translating on translatewiki.net.
  • Special:MessageGroupStats which shows the translations of a given marked page;
  • Special:Translate which shows all translatable segments in your chosen language. Unfortunately, it might show segments from different pages next to each other.
The translation interface

Check out the image to the right to get a glimpse of the translation interface.

  • You have to save each translation by clicking on the Publish translation button. You may navigate between the segments, but unsaved ones will be lost when you refresh the page.
  • You can filter segments based on their status (outdated, translated, unreviewed).
  • Outdated segments have a yellow marker.
    • When segment borders change in the source language, hidden fuzzy messages will appear in the translated text. You may remove these after you have made sure that the translation corresponds with the source text.

Translation tips[edit source]

  • When you have finished with the translation, read through the whole text. Make sure that each part is translated consistently with the same style and word usage throughout the page.
  • You don’t have to translate the titles of MediaWiki pages, as these display titles, in practice, are never shown.
  • If you translate the title, keep in mind that the page will not be accessible through the display title. (I.e. the search box won’t return results for the translated title.)
    • You may append the original title in brackets (namespace:pagename/code) behind the translated one to remind your readers. (Example: Incubator:About/hu.)
  • As per above, do not translate pagenames in links, as they will not work.
    • You may link translated versions (subpages) directly. A French example would be: Help:FAQ/fr instead of Help:FAQ.
    • You may link the reader’s preferred language like this: Special:MyLanguage/Help:FAQ.
      • Shortcuts do not work with Special:MyLanguage or by attaching ISO codes to them. Replace shortcuts with the proper name of the target page.
    • You may provide the translation in the link as a display text. A French example would be: Help:Manuel instead of Help:Manual/fr. Details: w:en:Help:Introduction to editing with Wiki Markup/3.
    • Section headers should be translated exactly as they are given on the target page. A French example would be: 1 : Prérequis instead of Help:Manual#Step 1: Requirements. If the section names in the link and the target page mismatch, the link will still work, but it will not jump to the given section.
  • Links sometimes appear as $variables. Test how they will fit your translation, so that they will not disrupt text flow.

Versions[edit source]

If a source page changes, a translation administrator has to approve the changes, before they would appear in the extension. This might take some time.

Notifications[edit source]

Users can sign up for notifications through Special:TranslatorSignup. Admins can send such notifications through Special:NotifyTranslators, but this feature is rarely used.

Manual subpages[edit source]

Some project pages are not important enough mark them in the Translation extension. But, if you really want to, you can create a localized version of them by adding a language code after their name, effectively creating a subpage: namespace:pagename/code. In these cases, a subpage contains a whole translated page or header.

This is the old method of translating and is largely supplanted by the Translate extension.

Normal procedure[edit source]

You can freely create subpages in our project (Incubator:) and help namespaces. When you translate a page:

  • modify the links, so that they point to the translated versions of other pages, if they exist. Links without a language code lead to the original English page. See also: #Translation tips;
  • insert the Translations template on the top of the subpage. Add this to the original English article as well, if it does not have it already (i.e. if you are the first one to translate a page). It allows an easy switch between languages. Its "version" parameter indicates how up-to-date a page is: for example, if the translation is at "1.0" while the English source is at "3.0", then the translation is a rather outdated one. If you have updated the translation, don’t forget to update its version number. (When a significant change is made on the source, its version should be updated. On marked pages, the Translate extension supplanted version numbering.)

Templates[edit source]

If you want to translate a template, you should ask an administrator to create the subpage for you. Normal users are not able to create non-prefixed pages/templates.

MediaWiki namespace[edit source]

See also: Special:AllMessages.

Our sidebar, parts of the main page and some templates use certain MediaWiki pages (or so-called messages). User preferences determine the language of interface (i.e. they assign which localized MediaWiki pages will appear for each user).

  • If a translation is not complete, the missing MediaWiki messages will be borrowed from another language. The so-called fallback language, which can be set for each language separately by developers, determines where will the missing messages be borrowed from: by default, this is English. However, in the case of Cajun French, it had been set to French (see: rev:92418 and rev:92419).

Although most of the MediaWiki messages can now be found on translatewiki.net, there are some local ones still. To edit pages and create subpages locally in the MediaWiki namespace, you will need the editinterface right:

  • you can request to become a translator to have this right; or
  • you can ask administrators on their noticeboard to perform edits for you in that namespace. This is the preferred way and you still have to supply the translations in this case.
    • Before making a request, please check on translatewiki.net whether the text is available there for translation or not.

Do not use the Translations template on translated MediaWiki pages.

Global translations[edit source]

You can translate most of our MediaWiki messages on translatewiki.net. See these categories:

Our project pages and templates sometimes link to corresponding pages on Meta. For example, we use their speedy deletion criteria. Meta uses the same Translate extension as we do; some project pages are worth translating there, but that is not our primary focus here.

Language priority[edit source]

Most languages have a normal priority. All translations are equally important here, but there are certain languages which are going to be used more because of their wide coverage and usage as second languages. We prioritize translating into these priority languages.

  • For us, a language is important, if it has many speakers who do not have a Wikimedia project in their own languages yet. Using common sense, we determined these to be the UN official languages, Bengali, Hindi and Portuguese. These happen to be most spoken languages on Earth. German is a major language, but translating to German is not a priority here, as most languages of Germany, Switzerland and Austria have their own wikis already.
  • To avoid languages being thrown around in categories, we discuss changes and provide reasons on the Community Portal first. Do not take this classification too seriously though, as it has no real importance.

Regional languages and dialects have limited importance to outsiders: translation into them is not encouraged, but nevertheless welcome.

Regional languages and dialects[edit source]

Attention We do not recommend you to translate into these languages unless you want to keep the pages up-to-date. These languages are not likely to have a wide array of speakers among our target population, so these translations will be useful only to a specific community. Once their project gets its own wiki, it is likely that these translations will fall into disuse.

History[edit source]

Incubator was created on 2 June 2006. Before October 2007 there were as well as no translations.

We turned on our login language selector in 2007. It was a precursor to translations as it enabled changing some links in the sidebar.

In 2008, we adapted the Transcom’s concept of language priority. In 2011, supporting the Foundation’s ongoing expansion projects in India, we added Bengali and Hindi to the priority languages.

We installed the Translate extension on 6 February 2012. Before that, translations had to be made on manually created subpages. You may track which pages were marked for translations here.

The translator group was introduced in 2008 to allow edits in the MediaWiki namespace without admin rights. Requests for this right were handled on Template:Test wiki/translations until 10 August 2010, but since then we moved this section to Incubator:Administrators#Other requests. Since then most of our MediaWiki messages were moved to Translatewiki, and as of 11 December 2020, we have no users with translator rights.
