Latin (Romi) script Konkani pages missing? Gom Wikipedia

Dear MF-Warburg

http://gom.wikipedia.org/ Where are the pages in Romi Konkani Script ? The Discover asked if I could volunteer to bring them on the main page. I shall be happy to help import them from the incubator. Only need to know the steps and process to be done. awaiting reply

Support : Request to include Latin script Konkani in the gom Wikipedia

Hello Language Committee, Painstakingly I have worked to build up articles in the Latin script Konkani on Gom Wikipedia. I have added more than 800 pages approximately. And also others have contributed. There is a lot of Konkani knowledge available in Latin Script which needs a platform to put it together in one place. This will be accessible to the Konkani speaking community spread world wide. We are not getting any grants. It is our love for our Mother tongue and the desire to make its knowledge accessible to our community worldwide.

The Konkani speaking community located outside India speak the mother tongue Konkani at home. But the script is an issue for them to access. As not all of them can understand the Devanagiri or Kannada Script. The Latin script is internationally known. There are many languages which do not have script of their own but use Latin Script. Tourist and other people who do not know the vernacular scripts will find the Latin script helpful also, Since Goa is also a Tourist destination.

I have used a software to transliterate articles from Latin Konkani to Devanagiri Konkani and these have been posted in the Gom Wikipedia. But as I have mentioned not all can read the Devanagiri or Kannada Script, Latin Script becomes handy since all know the Latin script. It would be injustice to the Konkani language and spread of its knowledge if the Latin Script is not included as many who cannot understand the vernacular script will have no access. They will find Gom Wikipedia unaccessible just becuase of the script. I also intend to continue transliterating literature available now on Gom Wikipedia into Latin Script.

Do consider this earnest and sincere request to include the Latin Script articles of Konkani in the Gom Wikipedia. Together the Devanagiri and Latin Script Konkani will enrich each other for the spread of knowledge in Konkani to Konkani speaking community which are spread all over the world. They are mostly settled in Canada, United Kingdom, Portugal, Australia, USA, Pakistan and the Middle East. These people do not know the vernacular script but know the Latin Script and will be able to read and understand Knowledge in their Mother tongue - Konkani. Hope Wikipedia does no injustice to the Latin Script Konkani articles. It is already suffering due to suppression from various sources.

Hope the Language Committee does not suppress the Latin Script Konkani which has been used for more than 400 years and is still being used daily

Thanking you in anticipation of a positive action

Creating pages is too complicated

Suppose a new user wants to create a new page. They type a plain title into the search box, and it tells them that they need to log in, and then set preferences so that "we can tell you which page you can create". Well, perhaps they figure out the whole prefixes system, and then they search for a title including the correct prefix. Even if they've already created an account by this point, they will still be given the message "Please set your test wiki preference so we can tell you which page you can create!", even though the prefix is right there. So, suppose they click the link to preferences, and log in or create account if they haven't yet done so. The page contains a large "Basic information" containing all sorts of stuff, and then a complicated "Internationalisation" section requiring the user to set an ISO 639 code (a term which most users probably don't even recognize) into the "Test wiki language" (and not the "Language" box) buried in that section. And then they click save, and then they can create pages.

In reality, most will have given up by this point. This is obviously a serious problem.

So here are my proposals:

  1. If a user searches for a title that contains a valid prefix, have the create-page link right there. Modify MediaWiki:Wminc-search-nocreate-nopref as necessary.
  2. If the user searches for a title without a valid prefix, put a dropdown or something right there on the search page. If the user was searching from an existing test wiki, assume by default that's probably the one the user wants.
  3. Add a special page which sets the user's test wiki simply by being there, so that people can be invited to help with a test wiki by being sent a simple link.
  4. For users who don't have a test wiki set, add an accessible link (perhaps in the sidebar) to set the currently-viewed test wiki as the user's test wiki.
  5. Allow IPs to set cookie-based test wiki preferences. Do it with plain javascript if necessary.

These are good ideas. The best way to get them implemented is by writing a patch to the Incubator extension, if you can program, I daresay. --MF-W {a, b} 23:47, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, adding all those prefixes in the wikilinks and categories makes editing in Incubator much more cumbersome than it is in the main Wikipedia. If there is some way to get rid of the prefixes, and make Incubator wikis simple like the main Wikipedia, it would make it much easier to get non-coders to participate. --Djembayz (talk) 00:26, 11 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. IMHO the goal of Incubator should be to make it as close to a normal subdomain as possible. Unfortunately, there haven't been many software developments towards this for several years now. --MF-W {a, b} 01:03, 12 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

References template

I'm having problems with Referencing in the Dagbani Test Wikipedia. The usual {{reflist}} template does not work. I need help.

I'm having the same problem in Noongarpedia. The usual {{cite web}} template doesn't work either. Hughesdarren (talk) 10:42, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That's because the templates don't exist. They need to be created anew on every wiki. Be cautious however when taking over templates from en.wikipedia, they are often very complicated and require lots of other templates (and sometimes modules) to work properly. Usually it will be easier to create your own template. --MF-W {a, b} 17:20, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I know how to use the template but have no expertise in creating one, would you be willing to give some help as to where to start? SignWriting Keyboard on Wp/ase

The ASL Wikipedia (Wp/ase) is very much in need of an input method to allow editors to actually do anything, so I've been working on one (User:Yair_rand/SWKB.js) for the past year or so. I'm giving a presentation regarding it tomorrow at the SignWriting symposium, which will be a great opportunity to potentially recruit a whole lot of editors, assuming the input method is turned on by default by then. So, if an admin could edit the relevant JS page (copying the contents of this to MediaWiki:Wp/ase/Common.js) within the next 18 hours or so, that would be very helpful. --Yair rand (talk) 20:32, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Tunisian Wikipedia (Wp/aeb) and Wiktionary (Wt/aeb)

We will do our projects in Tunisian Arabic in Arabic Script. I had found a solution so that all the Tunisian People who do not have an Arabic Layout can contribute to Wikipedia and Wiktionary and I have also found a solution for major linguistic problems.

So, I would like to remove my application to support aeb-latn and work on aeb. I ask about what I should do.

Yours Sincerely,

HotCat for Wt/lad

Hi everyone, I would like to implement HotCat for the Ladino Wiktionary project. It desperately needs it as it has many categories and it is quite difficult and time consuming to add them manually. I don't know how to do it, so I would be very grateful if anybody could give me a hand with it. Thank you very much. --Universal Life (talk) 09:19, 7 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! anyone can answer?--Ibrahim Khashrowdi (TalK) 00:00, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This will require more information from the Language Committee, which I am not a member of. Usually, approvals are granted depending on the size and relative activity of the project. I am not exactly certain if this is a suitable place for asking for approval from Langcom. --Hydriz (talk) 13:15, 17 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The more suitable place for asking for approval from Langcom is Here.
I am not a member of the Language Committee (Langcom) either, but here is my observation:
  • On this request page, it only mentions and User:Ibrahim khashrowdi and User:Bal.Och as part of the Editing Community. I advise that you add more names onto that Editing Community list, especially the names of the native speakers who had remained active editors over the past few months.
  • Another part of the approval process is to "verify test project content with a reliable neutral source, such as a professor or expert" ([3]). You can request Langcom to find a Professor or Expert in the Western Balochi language and Langcom would then contact that Professor/Expert to verify the test project.
--Philip J (talk) 23:03, 17 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot Hydriz for answer and thanks a lot Philip J for good and useful information. Our project active for few months but it's no accept by Langcom. --Ibrahim Khashrowdi (TalK) 22:48, 22 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Two general questions about working here

  1. Why does the gadget "project specific logos" not work on Wiktionary pages? (It seems to work on all others.)
  2. If I am writing a page that is eventually destined for "Project" namespace, am I supposed to position it here in mainspace as Wt/lad/Viksionario:xxxx or in Incubator space as Incubator:Wt/lad/xxxx?

Thank you. StevenJ81 (talk) 13:38, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In reply:

  1. No idea. Perhaps another user can answer that question.
  2. Please use "Wt/lad/Viksionario:xxxx". Your pages will be about Wt/lad, not about Incubator itself :)

--OWTB (talk) 14:02, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. (I wonder if we ought to have some kind of "Project-test" namespace for that. But as long as the eventual import task successfully dumps such pages into the "Project" namespace of the new project, I don't suppose it matters much.) StevenJ81 (talk) 14:54, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think the main reason for that would be that it would be very difficult to move all the project pages of the already existing test projects into that namespace, as their names would be different for all languages and projects. Also, that would require a lot of link-fixing etcetra. The current system seems to work, so in that case it is: don't fix if it ain't broken :) --OWTB (talk) 15:09, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Too right! StevenJ81 (talk) 15:32, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Answered my own question #1. See here: MediaWiki:Gadget-ProjectSpecificLogos.js. "[T]here is no common Wiktionary logo at the moment."
Feh. We should pick one for now; anyone successfully spinning off a project can decide what they want to use. Meanwhile: I found two very nice ones at Commons that have no writing on them. See User talk:StevenJ81, where I posted them. Any thoughts? StevenJ81 (talk) 17:50, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've never seen the second one in use on a Wiktionary, the first one seems better. --MF-W {a, b} 00:02, 17 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Some Wiktionaries are using the second one, but since the main portal uses the first one along with the majority of the language editions, I think it would be better to use the first one. --Hydriz (talk) 12:56, 17 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I happen to agree with both of you, but had wanted to offer a choice. So when you feel sufficient time has passed to consider this proposal acceptable, the location of the file is File:Wiktionary_Ko_without_text.svg (on Commons).
PS: My request for Test-Admin status is mature at this point. StevenJ81 (talk) 13:59, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Done Since there were no other comments, I went ahead with the change. --Hydriz (talk) 03:45, 27 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

My empty UserPage

I used a delete-template I thought with a motivation (user request), but there is written "no reason. Anyways the reason is I want to see a copy of my MetaUP, great feature with deleted personal page. Thanks in advance for deleting it ASAP :-)  Klaas `Z4␟` V09:46, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Flagging a page for deletion

How do I do that? I'm in the WP:mus (Creek/Muscogee) incubator.

This is an obvious test page: https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/mus/Ruhangan

WP templates don’t work. — Alarob (talk) 16:42, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I added {{Delete}} with the reason "Test page". If you think that rather than being a speedy-delete candidate it should go through RfD, then remove the template I added and go to Incubator:Deletion requests and put in an RfD request. StevenJ81 (talk) 17:05, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I deleted the page. Also, Incubator:Deletion requests are only for deleting the whole test wiki (especially if it does not fit in the Incubator). They are not for deleting individual pages like on Wikipedia. If you wish to discuss the deletion of a specific page in a test wiki, there are talk pages that the editors of that test wiki would use to discuss such matters. Hope this helps. --Hydriz (talk) 13:00, 20 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That wasn`t clearly described over there. Thanks for the clarification. StevenJ81 (talk) 13:13, 20 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Great, at least now we have feedback on what to improve on. Thanks! --Hydriz (talk) 13:20, 20 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, Hydriz, I went back and looked at Incubator:Deletion requests. Look at the section "requests for deleting single pages". Most of that section refers to speedy deletion. But the last bullet point says, "In other cases, you may put a request below." I interpret that to say that RfD cases are supposed to be listed on that page. That's not consistent with what you just said, so by all means let's clarify that. StevenJ81 (talk) 17:59, 20 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I have clarified it in the leading sentence of the page, hopefully it is clearer. --Hydriz (talk) 01:27, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That works! Thanks, Hydriz. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:55, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Failure of hotcat (and my global.js) on some pages of Incubator

Hotcat does not seem to be working for me in Incubator. (Additionally, on project pages of the Incubator, though not on general pages, my global.js is also not working.) Can someone please take a look? Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:45, 29 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds more like your browser or caching issue. Does refreshing (or hard-refreshing) work? Also, your global.js should not contain importScriptURI and importStylesheetURI, I believe they have been deprecated a long time ago. Open up your browser's console to see if there are any errors or warnings. --Hydriz (talk) 02:39, 30 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not a programmer. I added that code because I wanted to try to use Cat-a-lot to fix categories in these test projects and on ladwiki. That seemed the best way to go, unless you know of a bot that can do some of this easily. (Example: within Category:Wt/lad/Sujetos, I have some subcategories starting "Wt/lad/lad ..." that I want to fix back to "Wt/lad ...") I do wonder why I can't get Cat-a-lot to work here, but that's a different discussion. And I wouldn't know how to look in my browser to find an error or warning.
The failure of hotcat (and my global.js from Meta) predates that code, anyway. I have purged caches, refreshed, etc., and none of that seems to work. To me, the oddity is that the scripts work on regular Incubator pages (like this one or the Main Page), but not on test pages. That said, I tried deactivating the project-specific-logo gadget to see if it was interfering, but that didn't help.
So if you're a coder and can help me diagnose this, it would be great. If not, maybe I'll ask someone over at Meta for help. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:38, 30 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Changed importScriptURI and importStylesheetURI to two instances of mw.loader.load. If I was supposed to do something else, I don't know what, or how. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:39, 30 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like it has got to do with MediaWiki:Gadget-addprefix.js when I was debugging. I added a condition to make sure that it only operates when the user is editing. Do check if HotCat works now (along with the other tools that you mentioned). --Hydriz (talk) 02:45, 31 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
HotCat "sort of" works now. When I come to Incubator cleanly it works. But often after I make a change using HotCat, it is not working after the page is saved, and I have to wait a bit/reload from server/bypass cache/etc. to get it working again. I haven't been able to find a pattern. StevenJ81 (talk) 18:06, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You probably will have to refresh your browser's cache. I tested again and HotCat does not appear to have any problems. --Hydriz (talk) 01:44, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion

Perhaps there should be a (non-prefixed) copy of {{User SUL Box}} and maybe {{User Meta-Wiki}} here. I created (imported) lad versions for my projects, but since my user page is not just a project user page but also an Incubator user page, perhaps a more general (and i18n-friendly) version should be included. I tried to create one myself, but the wiki won't let me create a non-prefixed template.

See m:Template:User SUL Box and m:Template:User Meta-Wiki for versions that have already had some i18n. StevenJ81 (talk) 23:29, 18 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure if importing them here would be a good idea, because it would mean an additional 2 templates to maintain in terms of translations. If there is a strong demand for these templates then I would be happy to import them over. --Hydriz (talk) 13:50, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Password Strength RFC

Hello

We have started an RFC on meta to increase password requirements for users that have accounts which can edit MediaWiki:Common.js, have access to checkuser or have access to Oversight.

These types of accounts have sensitive access to our sites, and can cause real harm if they fall into malicious hands. Currently the only requirement is the password is at least 1 letter long. We would like to make the minimum be 8 letters (bytes) long and also ban certain really common passwords.

By increasing requirements on passwords for accounts with high levels of access, we hope to make Wikimedia wikis more secure for everyone. Please read the full text of the proposal here, and make your voice heard at the RFC.

Thank you

Right to left

@Rachitrali:, why would you want it on the left? Khowar is written left-to-right. —Justin (koavf)TCM 04:31, 13 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Justin, yes off course Khowar is written from left to write, but in this particular template, the template is from right to left instead of left to right. For example if we write in english the text will be left to right and the template is left side, In Urdu, Punjabi, Pashto and Khowar the text is from Right to left but the the Templates are from left side, please fix the error of template by shifting only the template from right to left, Thanks --Raki 04:38, 13 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Ibrahim Bhai Thanks a lot --Raki 03:58, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've created a script to implement some of the proposals I made last June, namely:

  • For users that have not set their test project preferences, the script adds proper prefixed links to the search page, based on previously viewed test project (or manually entered prefix if available), so that setting preferences before editing is not an absolute requirement for creating pages.
  • The script adds a "Set language" button to the sidebar, to easily change interface language preferences to that of the viewed test project.
  • The script adds a "Set (test project) as your test project" button to the sidebar.

Using JS to accomplish this is certainly not optimal, but it's better than the current situation, in my opinion. Thoughts? --Yair rand (talk) 06:40, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Well, maybe it's possible to make some of these part of common.js or gadgets (maybe even enabled by default). I haven't tried them out yet so far, however. --MF-W {a, b} 23:22, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I think enabled by default would be best. The features are most useful to those who wouldn't know how to turn on gadgets (or who don't even have accounts). --Yair rand (talk) 19:48, 17 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Anyone? Thoughts on whether this should be enabled? --Yair rand (talk) 06:41, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I enabled the script now but don't see any effects. What am I doing wrong? --MF-W {a, b} 12:03, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@MF-Warburg: So, there are a few possibilities. One is that you added it to the wrong page. User:MF-Warburg/monobook.js only runs when you're using the monobook skin. User:MF-Warburg/common.js works for all skins. Are you using monobook? Another possibility is that you're using an unsupported browser. What browser are you using? Or perhaps something from an unrelated gadget is interfering somehow. None of the script is running? You don't see a "Set language" button in the sidebar under "Donate" when viewing a test project? --Yair rand (talk) 16:34, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, this was my fault. I wasn't aware that mw.user didn't automatically load for monobook. Fixed now. --Yair rand (talk) 16:43, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It now works (monobook indeed). I added it as a default gadget at MediaWiki:Gadget-SetTestWikiPreference.js now (loading the script from your user subpage - can be changed if you become an admin, I think). Could you explain the search feature of your script again, though? I haven't been able to see anything when setting by test-preference to None and searching a page. --MF-W {a, b} 17:34, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If you have test-preference set to None, and search from an existing test project (that is, use the search box on a prefixed page), then the search results page will show the full "You searched for "(search terms)". You can create a page in your wiki at (searched title, with prefix from the previously viewed test project added)!", unless the searched title already had a prefix, in which case the link will be directly to the searched title. --Yair rand (talk) 20:40, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion at Wikidata

Very early stages I just created d:WD:INC to discuss issues with integrating Wikidata with Incubator. Please add info there if you want to work on cross-pollinating these two projects. Thanks. —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:29, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Will there actually be something done by developers? We have the bug in which the solution is described since Aug. 2013. --MF-W {a, b} 23:23, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@MF-Warburg: I can't speak to that but I will say that I don't think anything will happen without getting some traction going there. Linking to Incubator or mul.ws is pretty different than all of the other projects, so working out the logistics is difficult, I'm sure. —Justin (koavf)TCM 05:45, 15 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That is why we met in August 2013 and put forward the solution in phabricator:T54971#556492, to which Yair rand also linked from your Wikidata page. --MF-W {a, b} 22:11, 15 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I think this will be very difficult to be honest. It would require linking to a variety of projects and a variety of languages (including languages without any yet existing domains). However, if it is possible, it would be a great thing :) --OWTB (talk) 14:02, 15 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It might be worth starting out by trying to include non-prefixed pages here, so that pages like the current one can be linked to counterparts elsewhere. StevenJ81 (talk) 17:36, 20 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see what advantage that would effect. There few Incubator: pages which there are don't really need interwiki links. --MF-W {a, b} 16:25, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

	oldIE = oldIE && oldIE < 9;

The ase page is broken (at least on Firefox) - it's rotated by 90° and crashes the browser. Isn't that not the desired behaviour? --MF-W {a, b} 16:24, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@MF-Warburg: The rotation actually is the desired behaviour (sign languages are written vertically, so pages for the projects are oriented like that), but the crashing is certainly not the desired behaviour. I'm not seeing a crash when I view it in Firefox, so I'm not sure what's going on there. The rotation is not related to the script on the page, though. --Yair rand (talk) 16:37, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, monobook may have something to do with it. The rotation css (not part of the Wp/ase/Common.js script) was built for Vector, and works as a stopgap until CSSJanus is extended. --Yair rand (talk) 17:17, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) The problem is that the whole page is rotated. I'm therefore not able to create the tse page as it looks like this when I try to edit: [17]. --MF-W {a, b} 17:25, 21 January 2016 (UTC) - With Vector it looks a bit better, but is still unusable.[reply]
@MF-Warburg: Temporarily turning off the SignWriting gadget ("Supports display of sign writing characters in Wp/ase") would make it look normal. It wasn't really built for code-editing. :( --Yair rand (talk) 18:13, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I see. I created the tse script now. --MF-W {a, b} 19:20, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Adyghe approval

How come that the Adyghe Wikipedia project has been approved if it doesn't have any of the most used core messages translated (a requested that had been asked for the Jamaican Wikipedia to be approved long time ago. Regarding the quantity of articles (another requisite asked for the approval of Jamaican Wikipedia) we have 603 articles in Jamaican and there are 349 articles in Adyghe. Regarding the latest editions, you can see that Jamaican Wikipedia has far more editions in the last 30 days than Adyghe. So I would like to ask first for the reason why Adyghe's project has been approved and not Jamaican taking into account all the aforementioned and second, I would like to request the approval of the Jamaican Wikipedia. Thanks for your help. --Katxis (talk) 12:07, 4 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The localisation is complete in ady-cyrl (see also the notice in codelookup about such things). --MF-W {a, b} 19:28, 4 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

As I've seen in that website, if the Most used core messages and the majority of the ProofreadPage extension are translated, the Wikipedia will be approved regardless of the quantity of articles, am I right? Katxis (talk) 09:31, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No, how do you come to that idea? --MF-W {a, b} 10:24, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
So, could you please explain what does the Jamaican Wikipedia need to be approved? First we were told that we need to translate the most used core messages, then we were told it was fine the quantity we had in Jamaican and that we should focus on content so we are a bit lost regarding the requirements. Could you please tell us what do we need to do because we don't have any idea. Thanks for your help. Katxis (talk) 16:03, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the requirements for approval are complete translation of the most-used messages and continuous activity of 3+ users for at least several (3+) months. According to codelookup, at the moment 114 most-used msgs are not translated into Jamaican; and Wp/jam only had 2 editors with more than 10 edits in the last 2 months, and only 1 (you) so far in this month. --MF-W {a, b} 16:17, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I couldn't find Kabɩyɛ on the list that appears in the home page of the incubator. Is there is a reason for this? We're feeling kind of invisible. Hi @KuboF, I'm still here :-) I'll just need the name "Wikipedia" and the subline "The Free Encyclopedia" translated into Jamaican, and I should be able to come up with a logo proposal without any significant delay. Test wiki dependent Sitenotice

I am thinking about using Sitenotice for Esperanto Wikivoyage (especially for newcommers and for advertising our new social media accounts). Is it possible to make such Sitenotice only for Wy/eo (something like MediaWiki:Sitenotice/Wy/eo)? User:Danny B.: Do we have something like this? --MF-W {a, b} 00:56, 25 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Not ATM, I can try to create something. The question is, how much accessible to non-admins it should be.
Danny B. 12:40, 25 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if it's in the MediaWiki namespace, "translators" could also edit it; which would probably be sufficient. --MF-W {a, b} 13:34, 25 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
In this concrete instance it would be no problem if it would be accessible only for admins, because the are 2 test-admins on Wy/eo. And full access would be not problem too, becuse test-admins can protect the page if there would be vandalisation. --KuboF (talk) 21:20, 27 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well, test-admins can't edit protected pages; however translators can edit MediaWiki: pages, and it is no problem to e.g. make every test-admin a translator. --MF-W {a, b} 01:40, 9 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Adding infoboxes to Wikipedia Incubator entries

I am attempting to add an infobox to a Wikipedia incubator entry - (full page address: https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/kbp/Moli%C3%A8re_Jean_Baptiste_Poquelin) - that I am editing, however when I preview the changes, I simply get the link and message:

Template:Infobox Écrivain and no more... Clicking on the link gives an error screen with the message:

Template:Infobox Écrivain Error: This page is unprefixed.

There is currently no text in this page. You can search for this page title in other pages, or search the related logs.

The code for the infobox is as follows:

Template:Infobox Écrivain

I can personally see nothing wrong with this code, although I am not very experienced in creating Wikipedia entries. This code has been compared with that in another page with an infobox and there seems to be no significant differences.

I am beginning to suspect that the original Écrivain infobox has been deleted which may explain why references to it do not function correctly...!

I would be grateful for any help or input.

--SFLord (talk) 13:10, 6 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

OK.
  • First problem: When you start off with something like:
    {{Infobox Écrivain
    | nom ...
That language inside the article is trying to call an infobox template called {{Infobox Écrivain}}. Unless you've created or imported the infobox template here in Incubator, nothing is going to happen. (See en:Help:Template or fr:Aide:Modèle for information on how to create a template.)
  • Second problem: On Incubator, both the template and any links inside it will have to be prefixed. So unless you actually call the template with something like:
    {{Wp/kbp/Infobox Écrivain
    | nom ...
still nothing is going to happen.
I hope that helps. StevenJ81 (talk) 16:02, 6 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Usually, people will import them from other wikis, though when you do that you have to make sure that you also import any subtemplates that they call. "Reserved for local use" language codes and their test projects

i.e. http://www-01.sil.org/iso639-3/codes.asp?order=639_3&letter=q (from "qaa" to "qtz"), and from "Wp/qa" to "Wp/qta" on [40].

On the second Wikipedia Hainanese request page, @CasetteTapeMaster: said "Robert Sneed says yes!", I think he is claiming that these codes are valid, but as he is not from Language Committee I can't believe him.

So I want to get answers from Langcom members about the actual status of em. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 07:42, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, they are reserved for local use. That does not however imply that one can just assign languages to those codes as one sees fit. The rule is: there has to be a code specifically assigned to the language in order to make it eligible for a new wiki-project. --OWTB (talk) 15:42, 6 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Help

How to translate the interface language? Thanks. --User:Amara-Amaziɣ (talk) 16:14, 7 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You can do so on translatewiki:. --MF-W {a, b} 08:14, 8 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
What about the Main page? I didn't find Moroccan Amazigh (zgh). How I'll translate?. --User:Amara-Amaziɣ (talk) 21:01, 8 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Can see Portal:Zgh--Ibrahim Khashrowdi (TalK) 22:31, 8 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure there is a problem with Moroccan Amazigh (zgh). This language cannot been displayed here, even if I click on "Set language: zgh". "zgh" is considered as undefined language, and it doesn't figure in the list of languages. --User:Amara-Amaziɣ (talk) 12:42, 9 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
For Main page, I believe you want to translate Incubator Main page? I have tried both [41] (gives me a broken interface) and [42] (after clicking "Create source", it gives me a general WikiEditor interface), as you can see both are not possible, maybe Phabricator report needed. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 14:46, 9 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding prefixes

I mean by prefixes "Portal":Example or "Template":Example... etc. Should I translate them in the test wiki to - for example in my language - ⴰⵡⵡⵓⵔ:Example... etc. ? --User:Amara-Amaziɣ (talk) 19:07, 9 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

These are called "namespaces". Translating them would break their function in the case of Templates, Categories, Modules etc. as the software doesn't recognize the translated title. However once your project moves to an own subdomain, the namespaces there can be translated. --MF-W {a, b} 12:21, 10 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for answer! What about the Portal namespace, we can translate it? --User:Amara-Amaziɣ (talk) 14:08, 11 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Portal is not a standard namespace (see mw:Help:Namespaces for a list). That means there needs to be a custom setting on the subdomain later for the namespace to work - please note such additional namespaces which you use on the Request page on Meta so that it can be kept in mind when the wiki will be created (Namespace name & English translation). Also note that you need to name such pages "Wp/zgh/Portal:Bla", as opposed to "Template:Wp/zgh/Blubb". --MF-W {a, b} 08:48, 12 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@173.55.239.44: Some WMF projects certainly do that: there are fairly active Wikipedias for small languages and some members of Wikisource and Commons who are trying to preserve texts and recordings. In addition, Wiktionary includes many terms for obscure languages. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:33, 12 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects from non-existing subdomains

When did we stop having functional redirects from language subdomains to the corresponding incubator projects? For instance http://bqi.wikipedia.org/. Is this related to the HTTPS/HSTS configuration? If so, the redirects could maybe be restored as part of phabricator:T102824. --Nemo bis (talk) 14:06, 22 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't it the case that this never worked for languages which did not yet have at least one wiki? (E.g. https://tet.wiktionary.org works). Maybe also the change mentioned at m:Talk:Missing_wiki is part of the issue. --MF-W {a, b} 14:10, 24 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Wt test: I am going to change the page to a redirect to Wt/be-tarask, but I'm not going to put an actual root page in at Wt/betarask because there's nothing else present in that test. If someone actually wants to start it s/he is welcome.
  • Wy test: I'll move that en masse. But that said, there aren't so many pages, and there are no edits on any page after January 2014. At some point, I wonder how long we should leave absolutely dormant test projects in place, but for right now, I'll leave it in its new location. StevenJ81 (talk) 21:50, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

WikiManchu (Already Solved)

(Okay, let me translate it into English myself.)

Problem 1

There are various writing systems that can write out Manchu language, but only Möllendorff Latin transcription is used currently on Wiki-Incubator of Manchu. I hope a conversion system can be made among those writing systems on every page of Manchu wiki.

(Most commonly used writing systems of Manchu include: traditional Manchu script, Möllendorff Latin transcription, pseudo-Möllendorff Latin transcription, Daicing Latin transcription...)

Problem 2

Letters of Manchu script in Unicode cannot be shown. It seems a unique font is necessary. Obonggi (talk) 06:50, 20 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I can't really answer this. Maybe someone who is more familiar can? Or someone who knows about the Cyrillic/Latin conversion on Serbian Wikipedia? —Justin (koavf)TCM 02:19, 20 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, Problem 2 has been solved and Problem 1 is actually unnecessary since Manchu script has been realized on wiki because Manchu script is the only formal form of Manchu.--Obonggi (talk) 07:27, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

What do to do make Wy/ko live?

As part of a class project, we (I am the instructor of an English-language class in Korea) are considering finishing Wy/ko (Korean Wikivoyage) so that it could be live. But we don't know what needs to be done for it be move from an incubator to the mainspace? What do we need to do? Please ping User:Piotrus when replying. Thanks! --Hanyangprofessor2 (talk) 06:17, 19 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Piotrus: and @Hanyangprofessor2: As you can see at m:Requests_for_new_languages/Wikivoyage_Korean: "If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval." They are the ones who make the final decision on questions about graduating projects from the Incubator. —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:05, 19 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Koavf: Thank you. Since I have no prior experience with Incubator, let me ask - what criteria? I assume that some pages / categories / etc. need to be created, but is there a checklist for what needs to be done? I have students who are asking me "what do we need to write" and I am not sure what to tell them. PS. I'll also ping editors from the discussion you linked me (@한림, -revi, 관인생략:) and another one listed as most active in that project (@콩가루:).--Piotrus (talk) 07:59, 19 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Piotrus: I think there isn't a strict formula but as long as you have some content, some activity, and some reasonable expectation of growth, then it will be approved. As long as your students are adding any appropriate content, they are doing a good job. Do you want me to help you? —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:53, 19 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
User:Piotrus: There should be a continous activity of several users (at least 3-5) over at least several months (also 3+). It's also required that the MediaWiki interface is completely translated. If it is the aim of a school project to bring a project out of Incubator, that is nice, but we (the Language committee) want to be sure that there will be continued activity also after that. --MF-W {a, b} 22:49, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
MF-W: Is the interface translated? I am not sure I can trust the students with that, given I don't speak Korean. We can fill in the major content gaps, but I wouldn't count on any students to edit once the grades are in. For that, I pinged the Korean editors I know but so far I am not sure if they can help. --Piotrus (talk) 13:14, 22 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Piotrus: We don't actually do translations at WMF wikis themselves but at a closely-related site called Translatewiki. Korean is mostly translated with the biggest gap being in the MediaWiki Action API. —Justin (koavf)TCM 13:59, 22 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
User:Koavf: And I gather that's a required step for Wikivoyage? Because a number of other Korean wikis, inc. Wikipedia, seem to work just fine. --Piotrus (talk) 03:30, 23 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Piotrus: The category "MediaWiki (most important messages)" is 100% translated and the MediaWiki core is 99%, so there is no problem launching the project from a technical perspective. Let me also encourage you that even if ko.voy doesn't leave the Incubator, it is still a worthwhile public-facing wiki. Other users can see and interact with the content you post--it could actually be helpful to someone traveling which is the goal of Wikivoyage! —Justin (koavf)TCM 03:38, 23 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Singkiring57 (talk) 08:26, 3 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Singkiring57: The Warang Chiti script is typeable in Unicode, but which font is used?
Can you show the link to the Warang Chiti Unicode font for downloading and installation? Most people's internet browsers need to install that font in order to be able to view the Warang Chiti script. --Philip J (talk) 08:32, 3 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Philip J: Unfortunately, I could not find a Unicode compliant Warang Citi font. What I found were a few fonts having Warang Citi glyphs in place of Latin glyphs, they were probably used for printing books. -Singkiring57 (talk) 10:43, 3 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This is their official response:
"The Unicode Consortium is not a supplier or vendor of fonts. We do have a page that lists some known font resources. Please see: http://www.unicode.org/resources/fonts.html."
Another reply from a Unicode specialist:
"The Unicode Consortium does not release fonts for scripts encoded in the Unicode Standard, so there is no official Warang Citi Unicode font. Unfortunately, I do not know of any freely-available font covering Warang Citi, so the Warang Citi user community needs to produce a font themselves or hire someone to do so if they want to write documents in Unicode Warang Citi."
--Philip J (talk) 21:38, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It is possible to "remap" the existing font using FontForge. So, rather than having this script's glyphs in place of Latin glyphs, you could assign the glyphs to their proper Unicode codes. --GeekEmad (talk) 18:16, 28 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Importing templates and modules

Hello, I couldn't find a proper way to import Wiktionary templates and modules to Wt/arq. This page mentioned the Import tool, but apparently, there isn't one in Incubator. I'd like to import most Arabic-related templates and modules such as this conjugation template. I'll modify them so they could work properly for Algerian Arabic (not the same conjugation structure). Thank you --GeekEmad (talk) 08:32, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Of course the import function exists on Incubator; just the section above was another import request. Anyway, importing complex templates from English projects is generally something I would recommend to avoid and instead to create a more simple version of the templates, as they always require a rat-tail of other stuff, as the mediawiki.org article you linked also says. But if there is no alternative, I can import this for you. --MF-W {a, b} 23:45, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, apparently the use of Import is limited to admins and importers. Well, although I want to import the whole English templates, I won't be using more than 50% of its functions, because Algerian grammar and orthography are way simpler than the Arabic ones, plus, vocalization is not important since all vowels are written (short ones are phonetically reduced). (e.g. I only need the singular and the plural in the perfect and the imperfect with the feminine being required only in the singular from this template). I'd be very happy if there is a simpler way to prefix, suffix and change final consonants (sometimes) without importing all these templates. I read the explanation about templates in MediaWiki, however, it was not sufficient. Thank you. --GeekEmad (talk) 07:10, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Two wiktionary project for Zaza language?

Hello there is two project with zza and diq code. According to Wikipedia zza is Zaza language, and diq is for Dimli. Is Dimli dialect of Zaza language or not? --Aabdullayev851 (talk) 20:02, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Aabdullayev851, MF-Warburg: I'm calling in some help here. Here is the issue:
  • zza is a macrolanguage code. The macrolanguage "Zaza" has two constituent languages:
    • diq (Dimli, or Southern Zaza). There is a Wikipedia under this code: diq:, called "Zazaki Wikipedia" at m:List of Wikipedias
    • kiu (Kirmanjki, or Northern Zaza). There is a Wikipedia test project here (Wp/kiu), called "Kirmanjki Wikipedia". The request for that at Meta is called "Kirmanjki (Northern Zazaki) Wikipedia"
With respect to Wiktionaries, there are actually three test projects: Wt/zza, Wt/diq and Wt/kiu.
  • Wt/zza is not very thoroughly developed and should probably be absorbed into one or both of the others.
Wt/zza has now been deleted, per I:RFD. StevenJ81 (talk) 20:24, 21 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Wt/diq has a request in at Meta under the name "Zazaki Wiktionary"
  • Wt/kiu is described as "Kirmanjki Wiktionary", but has no request in Meta as far as I know.
So I think going forward there will be two languages going forward under codes diq and kiu. Whether diq is better described as "Zazaki" or "Dimli" is a question beyond my expertise to answer. But changing the name to Dimli across Wikimedia would undoubtedly take some work. StevenJ81 (talk) 22:44, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'll let you fix your page yourself, but unless promotional details, and biographical details not germane to Incubator, are removed, I will take the liberty to remove them by tomorrow. Kabiye Wikipedia

Why doesn't the Kabiye (kbp) Wikipedia appear on this dropdown list? https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:SearchWiki?searchproject=p&searchlanguage=kbp — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Gnangbade (discussioncontribs) 08:32, 29 November 2016 (UTC).[reply]

The dropdown list shows only languages that are included in MediaWiki (same as on e.g. Special:Preferences), which Kabiye (kbp) is not. SPQRobin (talk) 21:14, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

As I mentioned to you on Meta, 13% of the MediaWiki core messages must be translated before your language is available on the interface. The dropdown list runs on the same rule. StevenJ81 (talk) 21:30, 2 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
