Translation

Could you help me to translate these simple terms from Hokkien into Po-sing and Maing-ba's "Pe̍h-ōe-jī"?

• chhian-kí (千紀)
• sè-kí (世紀)
• nî-tāi (年代)
• nî (年)
• goe̍h (月)
• hō (號) or ji̍t (日): translate the one used for date.
• kū-le̍k (舊曆) or lông-le̍k (農曆): translate the one used for date.
• pêng-nî (平年)
• jūn-nî (閏年)
• chhut-sì (出世)
• kòe-sin (過身)

Re:Cantonese

FYI, the Cantonese wordlist has been created here by a native Cantonese speaker. I have created a conversion tool and have added a description at Wikipedias in multiple writings systems so someone can hopefully add a new task request at Phabricator to implement it in Cantonese Wikipedia. --DaveZ123 (talk) 07:38, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

As you probably know by now, here is the Eastern Min conversion tool which contains 6515 unique traditional chinese characters. It is far from perfect as I am not a native speaker of Eastern Min so it has not yet been 'proofread'/'tested'/'refined' by a native speaker of this language. Here is the link to Northern Min and Puxian Min which both contain approximately 3,000 characters. Once again neither of them have been reviewed by a native speaker of those languages so they are still in 'Beta' stage. (Thank you very much for your excellent efforts on the cpx and mnp 3,000 character wordlists). There is no rush to go beyond 3,000 characters at this stage for mnp and cpx. We can wait until the next native speaker turns up on Wikipedia Incubator or Wikipedia and ask for their feedback. --DaveZ123 (talk) 07:51, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

Re: Hainamese Romanized

In my opinion, it is the still the same dialect (Haikou). For example, I have created this convertor today which can convert the OT orthography to the NT orthography. In the future, this can be implemented on Hainanese Test Wikipedia so all articles can be viewed in both romanized orthographies. --DaveZ123 (talk) 08:05, 11 June 2026 (UTC)

Wow, this is a really great website! I hope it's helpful for the Hainamese Wikipedia. I prefer NT orthography. In many languages, the velar nasal consonant is spelled ng instead of g, just like in NT orthography.

BTW, the article Bǽh-oe-tu uses the OT orthography; could we add the NT orthography? Also, the list of vowels in that article is incomplete. I supplemented the missing vowels with the OT orthography based on the article Haikou dialect (see below), but I'm not sure if it's correct.

@唐吉訶德的侍從:, yes, you can add the NT orthography details to Bǽh-oe-tu, however upon further research, Jeremiassen had also published several NT books in the old orthography.

FYI, I found this page; if you go to the very bottom of that page, you would see the OT and NT books translated into Hainanese and their authors. From that page we can see that C.C. Jeremiassen (in Hainan between 1881 to 1901; source: pg. 51 and Pg. 107) published Genesis, Habakkuk, Malachi, Acts of the Apostles, Galatians, Philemon, Book of James all in 1899.

The translation work was continued by the other missionaries such as Frank P Gilman (in Hainan from 1886 until 1918) and K.L. Schaeffer (in Hainan from 1904 until 1930; source: pg. 113). Of course there were other christian missionaries in Hainan, however these are the only three who have their names on the OT & NT books published.

Frank P. Gilman (American) published the Gospel of Mark in Hainanese in 1902 however I am not sure which orthography was used.

K.L. Schaeffer (American) published the Gospel of Mark (1914), Gospel of Luke (1916) and Acts of the Apostles (1916) so we can be certain that the new orthography was used in these translations with the approval from the other missionaries such as Frank P. Gilman & other Hainanese native speakers I presume. --DaveZ123 (talk) 06:34, 12 June 2026 (UTC)

The Hainanese NT versions published by K.L. Schaeffer also very closely align with the Chinese Union Version (CUV, 和合本) so it is relatively easy to find one-to-one correspondence between each word making it easier to 'decipher' all the bible verses.

Whereas the Jeremiassen translations were not based upon the CUV translation (because the CUV was only launched in 1919), hence not all words could be deciphered that easily unless you are a native Hainanese speaker perhaps. --DaveZ123 (talk) 06:34, 12 June 2026 (UTC)
