Hello MF-W. We translated all of the 'most often used messages in MediaWiki' (remaining messages are same with fallback language). Please tell me now what are we supposed to do? Thank you.--Calak (talk) 23:18, 5 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well, for final approval, it would be necessary to have several (at least 3) regular contributors for some months - currently there are not so many. --MF-W {a, b} 01:23, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Livonian verification

Hi, I was curious what came out of your efforts trying to contact any of the authorities on Livonian? I guess, it didn't go too well? This is weird actually because it seems interest in it has increased rather than decreased (there have been more quality books published 2010-2014 than in all of 2000-2010...) I guess, this also means that Livonian authors could be pretty busy.

Is there a chance that they maybe misunderstood you and thought that you are asking them to participate not just verify?

Also, I have several (alternative?) "channels" in mind to try to contact: Nordic Bureau (under auspices of which Līvõ Kultūr Sidām operates), Latviešu valodas aģentūra (it deals mainly with Latvian but they are partnered with LKS as well), Somugristikas centrs in Latvian University and there could be more.

All of these are in Latvia, I could try to contact them (and speak Latvian to avoid any confusion, although most of them speak English as well, I'm sure). And then ask them to contact one of Incubator's administrators. What contact information should I give them? (That is, if I manage to convince them that it takes just maybe half an hour of their time and that they are not being asked to write articles but just verify them, lol!) Neitrāls vārds (talk) 15:55, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What happened is described in the section above: I didn't get replies, so I don't know whether they misunderstood me or not.
It would be very good if you could contact the people you proposed in Latvian to make sure they understand what we'd request from them. As contact info you can give my e-mail address, mfwarburg<at>googlemail.com. --MF-W {a, b} 23:52, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! First email sent (although my intuition tells me that it is probably going to take at least 15 before I get in contact with any of them! :D) I was wondering should I send you my email where you could forward any potential responses so I don't have to pester you on your talk page or would you rather like to leave a message on my talk page (in case of a response) so I can be up to date with any developments? Neitrāls vārds (talk) 00:29, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have no preferences about that. Please say what you prefer :) --MF-W {a, b} 22:53, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I think I'm going to send you my email now. I think you should be (potentially) getting an email from someone by the name Valts (a well known translator/author) but then again who knows (if there will be no feedback from him by Friday night then I guess I can move on to the next.) Neitrāls vārds (talk) 21:03, 23 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I got your mail; I'll notify you if anything appears in my inbox. --MF-W {a, b} 22:34, 23 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Help please

Hello. I have an account in Persian Wikipedia [1], but by mistake I have created a new account in Wikimedia. Would you please delete my new account and change my main account name to my new account name "Ilğım"? Ilğım (talk) 12:08, 1 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have not singed in here by my Persian Wiki account, is there any problem if I edit in Wikimedia by this account (Ilğım)? Ilğım (talk) 08:00, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, you can request renaming of your account on the pages listed here: m:RENAMELINKS. E.g. on fa.wikipedia, you need to request it to fa.wiki bureaucrats.
There is no problem if you edit on Wikimedia Incubator with the account Ilğım. --MF-W {a, b} 11:25, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. So I will edit on Wikimedia with the account Ilğım. Ilğım (talk) 17:20, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

AzbWiki ready to be decided

Hello Dear admin,
I know that in recent years we have flooded your page with messages about this Azb wiki, but you can understand that we also have been exhausted on this old running request. It's now been 6 years since the initial request has been created and still is waiting final decision.

I wanted to inform you that an important discussion is going on the Az wiki to finally decide about this matter and many have come to the conclusion that the second wiki is the only solution. The users of Az wiki are also frustrated on this matter and halted the creation of new articles in arabic script, because of the ultimate incompatibilities of these two languages. Both the users of Az wiki and us users of Azb wiki now have come to this solution that the Azb wiki is necessary and the Az wiki should only be in Latin script. If you (the language committee) still cannot decide on this matter, I propose that all the related users come to Meta and have a final discussion about this matter; if you approve this, I can arrange this event and invite everyone. I'm waiting for your reaction. Thanks in advance, موسا(دانیشیق) 12:25, 1 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello User:موسا. Could you inform me when the discussion on azwiki is finished? Then we can deliberate how to proceed best. --MF-W {a, b} 21:39, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Thank you for your attention. The discussion has been finished around the time I wrote this message for you. There was no formal consensus (like many countless discussions before), but almost all of the participants now agree that one wiki cannot satisfy both languages and scripts. You can see some new supporting votes after this discussion on the [meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Requests_for_new_languages/Wikipedia_South_Azerbaijani Request page]. موسا(دانیشیق) 14:28, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The templates on the external link

Dear MF-Warburg,

Why the appearance of Wikimedia Commons template and Wikispecies template on here are not as nice as on the other Wikipedia? I think I imitated the source of the templates perfectly, but Incubator can't adapted the sources.

Regards,

Relly Komaruzaman | Talk 11:02, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, what exactly is the problem? Which source did you want to imitate? --MF-W {a, b} 17:52, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I imitated the source from Wikipedia bahasa Indonesia and English Wikipedia.
Thanks. Relly Komaruzaman | Talk 23:36, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

An important message about renaming users

Dear MF-Warburg,

I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.

Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 18:24, 25 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Lieber MF-Warburg,

- bereits gesperrte Konten: Zazamental, Tadiranscopus, Mirzabegoviç, Tarakayska, Gagamen, Xobxo, Voyagembaz
--MF-W {a, b} 03:05, 5 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Vielen herzlichen Dank!
Logo display for Puxian Min

Dear MF-Warburg,

The SVG version of the Puxian Min Logo is now created here:
Puxian Min Logo in SVG
. It would be a great morale boost for the Puxian Min contributors if all Wp/cpx pages have the Puxian Min Wikipedia logo displayed on the top left corner by default.

(I have also double checked the spelling on the logo and it is correct).

Is it possible to redirect (301) local pages here to newly created wikis? otherwise please remove pages. Mjbmr Talk 07:20, 19 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
A note shows up when you try to edit the page. You can file a bug or code change so that the notice shows up also in read mode. The pages will be deleted after it's sure everything necessary was imported. --MF-W {a, b} 10:06, 19 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
What about 301 redirect? please set 301 redirect so they don't loose rank, also, the content should not be duplicated, one here, one in their wiki. Mjbmr Talk 15:52, 19 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
As I said, they will be deleted in due time. For the other stuff, I'm not a developer of the Incubator extension, so as I said it's best if you file a bug if you think it's desirable. --MF-W {a, b} 16:49, 19 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I can submit a patch if you want, but the problem is no one is to review it. Mjbmr Talk 17:05, 19 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Well, SPQRobin, the main developer of the extension, and Hydriz, who also contributed to it, are still active. I'm sure that they will react if you file a bug and subscribe them to it / add them as reviewers in gerrit. --MF-W {a, b} 11:18, 20 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Strange events & stranger reactions in incubator admins Politics

hi dear admin! Mr MF-Warburg!
before repeating my question/comment! i should say why i prefered to removed my question,i live in a country(named iran) and live Under the Persian racism.we are more than 15 million people and after our government collapse in November 1946 untill now,we have no right to write book in our language or read them,no right to have our own television channel and every protester will be sentenced to death and over the years all the world news agencies have boycotted us.
most of persians believe that the Aryan race is the Master Race and they are from aryan race!they try to inculcate south azerbaijan people that we are aryan too and our language changed over time by mongols!and we should speak with persian language!
The persian writers who wanted to help our wiki fired from their wiki writers society.it's impossible understanding our conditions by a person that doesn't live with us,but this type of life Unconsciously created hate and doubt in hearts of us against other people.
When i thinked better and i put myself in your place.I asked myself What could you do when persian iranians and north azerbaijanians filled arguments against us in request page and then i gave up asking my questions/comment.
--this was deleted comment--(As I said, I changed my mind but still i want to read your reply)
I wanted our admins in south azerbaijani wiki to protest delay of importing our wiki, but they said that prefer to wait.
I felt I must remind you and other admins of wikimedia's incubator somethings about our south azerbaijani wiki long history! Our friends requested for south azerbaijani in 2008 and then they started writing articles and translating wiki untill now,I think it's more than two years that our wiki have over thouthands article and a good activity there,In these years our south azerbaijani wiki admins received strange and incomplete answer to question of our wiki confitmation problem. In return admins of incubator in these years decided to confirm other test wikis with smaller writer community and less article, that we can see many of that defeated wikis in bottom of wikis list with 100 article and less,I don't want start froum-like argument here or argue about incubator admins politics,But i think that writers of south azerbaijani wikipedia waited enough and it is time for admins to hurry in importing our wiki to azb domain.we worked 2008-2015! i think it's record of incubator!
Our people have good memory and i think it's a good story and article for our wiki that how wiki admins waited 7 years for approving our wiki and how caused Deletion more than 15000 of our south azerbaijani articles in north azerbaijani wiki.
Our writers worked hard and now they like to work on our approved wiki domain as soon as possible, five years is enough,we want an acceleration and hurry in importing our wiki. Again i thanks for approve and I apologize if i was impolite or thankless.
--Sadiqr (talk) 22:22, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi User:Sadiqr, first of all sorry for the delay in this answer. - Regarding the long time it took for azb to get approved, I want to say that I can certainly understand that you and other contributors were quite impatient for the approval. It is also true that other wikis were approved in a time where Wp/azb already fulfilled the activity requirements. But this did not happen out of prejudice against azb, but because it was very complicated for Langcom to get a clear understanding of the situation, as you also say. There was a deadlock about it for a long time, until the question was brought up again after the deletion of arab-script articles on az.wikipedia.org. Finally, after all others agreed already to approve azb, one member finally backed down and allowed it to happen. --MF-W {a, b} 00:08, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have created a test page for Khowar language in incubator i.e. Wikipedia Khowar (Khowar Language Wikipedia), On behalf of the abovementioned Khowar speaking four countries for early approval and creation and normalization of Khowar Wikipedia edition. Khowar is one of spoken 14 languages in Chitral(Pakistan). It will be useful to Khowar internet users to report news from worldwide. I strongly feel it deserves its own Wikipedia. Request to suspend WKDx417's test-adminship.

Guten Tag, Herr MF-Warburg. WKDx417 had recently used his test-admin power to block Gmaildamn, but I looked through Gmaildamn's history on Wikimedia Incubator and found out that Gmaildamn never violated any Incubator Policy — In fact, Gmaildamn never contributed to the Incubator and WKDx417 had specified in the block log that he blocked Gmaildamn only because he doesn't like User:Gmaildamn's certain behaviours on Cantonese Wikipedia (Please refer to this message on Shinjiman's talk page), which has nothing to with the Wikimedia Incubator. In light of this severe abuse of power, I hereby request that WKDx417's test-adminship be immediately suspended. Danke schön. 【粵語文學大使殘陽孤侠粵維辭典起錨! 14:49, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

First, I just say sorry for Gmaildamn. Because I don't know this rule in the Wikimedia. I suspend Gmaildamn's due to his nonsense behaviour (2 violation threads (this and this, they all have deleted) and an editing warzh-yue:廣州碧桂園鳳凰城) for 3 times on Cantonese Wikipedia. These behaviours will seems to use sock puppets in forum A and other forums expect forum A.--WKDx417 (talk) 23:33, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I must say that I don't understand your action at all. Gmaildamn has made 0 edits here, so why did you choose to block him here preemptively, especially when he wasn't even blocked on zh-yue.wikipedia. Please don't do such things again. — On the other hand, my talk page is not a forum for administrative decision-making. It's best to discuss blocks etc. on the administrators' noticeboard. --MF-W {a, b} 01:53, 11 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Page deletion/request for restore to userspace

 • My apologies for putting my user page in the wrong spot; I haven't done much in the incubator before. Would you mind please restoring the former Wt/lad/User:StevenJ81 to User:StevenJ81, as well as Talk:Wt/lad/User:StevenJ81 to User talk:StevenJ81? You can replace the redirects that are in those places.
 • To partly explain: When I tried to place an interwiki link on some of my other user pages in Wiktionary (such as at en:wikt:User:StevenJ81), the "lad" link (to the notional :lad:wikt:User:StevenJ81) took me to Wt/lad/User:StevenJ81. When I tried to make a redirect there, it only worked as a soft redirect. So I created the userpage there instead. (I presume you don't even want me to put a redirect there, as it is technically main-to-user. Is that right?)

Thank you very much, and apologies for the inconvenience. StevenJ81 (talk) 19:15, 10 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Done. I see how you came to create these pages. Userpage interwiki-linking doesn't work well for Incubator test-projects, as every user only has one Incubator userpage, but is active in specific test-projects. However I think there is no need for user-pages in the test-wiki spaces; it's better if users makes distinctions in the user space. This also simplifies importing the test-projects when it eventually gets its own subdomain. Your presumption is correct. If an automatism makes Wp/xyz/User:Name links appear somewhere / lead people to think it should exist, it would be great if we could find a way to fix it. --MF-W {a, b} 02:00, 11 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
TY. StevenJ81 (talk) 02:34, 11 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Follow-on

Interestingly, I added the iw link lad:User:StevenJ81 to my userpage at English Wikisource. It adds an interwiki link with the legend "Ladino" on the left-hand side, and clicking through that link takes me to my userpage on the multilanguage Wikisource, which hosts Ladino documents. Of course, multilanguage Wikisource doesn't use prefixed page names, even in its main space. But I wonder if the code at this wiki could be modified so that the wiki does not automatically try to add prefixes onto page names that look like they belong to User (or User talk) space. I suppose one problem is the vast number of aliases User/User talk can have in other languages. But even if that only worked for English it would be a start. StevenJ81 (talk) 19:28, 11 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Alternatively, when we have, say, a template that we're running on the test wiki, its name comes out as Template:Wt/lad/.... So why wouldn't a user page in the test wiki be User:Wt/lad/...? Then, if there is an interwiki link from somewhere else, no matter where, it seems that the correct place for the platform to insert the prefixes should always be after the namespace designator. That's trivially true in main space, where the namespace designator is absent. But it should be true for every other namespace.
Anyway, this isn't a huge big deal; I thought I'd just share some thoughts. Have a good weekend. StevenJ81 (talk) 22:36, 11 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

We got a slight issue on this one. The link towards en.wp automatically adds "language" at the end, causing a bad link. Instead, it should link to the one with "language" at the end. I've tried to find anything in the parameters of the template but I couldn't find it. Perhaps you can take a closer look to see if we can do anything, because I can imagine this occuring in other future projects too. --OWTB (talk) 16:38, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Well yes, you can request adminship once the content is imported by putting your request on a general discussion page or maybe a specific page for "requests for adminship". Then it will be up to other contributors to comment/vote on it; who will surely also take your contributions on Incubator into account. After the request has been open for seven days, you can then request it to be closed by steward on m:SRP. --MF-W {a, b} 16:58, 12 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Well, unfortunately there is only a protection level "allow only autoconfirmed users", so we have to wait for the project to be at least 4-5 days old; as before that, there can't be autoconfirmed users. --MF-W {a, b} 20:35, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see. He is creating new accouts now and continues to vandalise. And I have a question: why aren't the interwikis working yet? Ilya Drakonov (talk) 05:22, 14 February 2016 (UTC).[reply]
It takes some time for Wikidata to recognize the new wiki. If the problem persists in a few days, please report it on the phabricator report which was about the creation of the new wiki. --MF-W {a, b} 16:58, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) I wonder if we shouldn't have a policy where at least test-admins, and possibly anyone else the test-admins designate, could be marked "confirmed" on the day a project is moved. This way, we don't have this 4-5 day window. StevenJ81 (talk) 21:00, 17 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Need a little help

Hi, MF-W! I need a little help or an advice. 20 February I applied for Reviewer status in Ukrainian Wikipedia. Yesterday an admin gave it to me, but in a few hours another administrator took away the status and said "he does not now Ukrainian language good enough". It is just a manifestation of nationalism from the administrators in Ukrainian Wikipedia and it lasts for a long time. Who can help me? Ilya Drakonov (talk) 05:27, 28 February 2016 (UTC).[reply]

Well, you can ask the admin who gave you the rights what he thinks about his colleague's action. Otherwise is there maybe a an "administrators' noticeboard" on ukwiki where others can review it as well? --MF-W {a, b} 12:02, 28 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No, they have a noticeboard, but it looks like the Chechen Wiki situation in 2012, it's an open nationalism in most of the administrators. There is no such thing as NPOV and if you are Russian, they think they have the right to abuse you or even say they'l block you when you tell them the've gone too far. All started in 2014, when I came to Ukrainian Wikipedia. I noticed, that all articles about Crimean cities have no word about the "Russia (de-facto)". It said only "Ukraine". I changed a few articles, making them "Russia/Ukraine" and they just blocked me for 2 weeks and then changed it for indefinite. On summer 2015 I asked my colleague from Udmurt Wikipedia to ask them to unblock me and since that time I have written more than 20 articles and made 500 edits, not taking the Crimean theme any more. Then, a weak ago I applied for Reviewer status, having 2 times more contribs than needed for it. Yesterday Maksim Pidlisnyuk gave the Reviewer and Rollbacker statuses to me, but this morning this user took them away and said that I don't now the language good enough, but I was busy yesterday and didn't even use the flags. Now, I don't know what should I do. And UkWiki has become very strange. Maybe we need the Wikimedia Community to see what's going on there.
P.S: if you want to see what means NPOV in UkWiki, see Crimea, Russia, Georgia etc. All these cases violate the basic rules of Wikipedia. Best regards, Ilya Drakonov (talk) 12:30, 28 February 2016 (UTC).[reply]
Also, a friend of mine from Belorussian Wikipedia is blocked there, because of changing "Ukraine" on "Ukrainian SSR" (see diff). He was right, because in the 1940-s there wasn't a Ukraine yet. He is blocked for indefinite now there, but he did not do anything bad + he is ukrainian. Ilya Drakonov (talk) 18:18, 29 February 2016 (UTC).[reply]
Well, I'm very sorry, but I personally can do nothing about it. You can consider to start a m:RFC on Meta though. --MF-W {a, b} 22:34, 29 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Jamaican Wikipedia

Hi! I would like to ask you if it is possible to approve the Jamaican Wikipedia as we have already three Wikipedians working on the project (‎Larisamakbiin, Yocahuna, and myself). We have been creating articles everyday and we already have 752 articles so it would be Wikipedia number 246 (after Latgalian and before Zulu) out of almost 300. Please compare Category:Wp/olo/Voikalat and Category:Wp/krl/Voikalat (livvikse) (+ compare pages in them). The last of two categories contains pages in Livvi-Karelian (Olonets Karelian), pages in which are in its own wiki. Wp/krl should contain pages in standard/proper Karelian only. Also, "livvikse" = "in Livvi(-Karelian)".

I believe we should separate one wiki project for each individual language, if we do not want to have problems in a future. --Ghiutun 19:44, 13 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Jamaican Wikipedia 2

Hi! Sorry to bother but I would like to ask you if the Wikipedians working on the Jamaican Wikipedia are the ones who should move the articles to the new site or it is done by a bot. --Katxis (talk) 11:06, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry, that will be done by me. --MF-W {a, b} 21:13, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Somebody has vandalised the Jamaican Wikipedia. I would like to take the opportunity to ask for the administrator rights as I had here. --Katxis (talk) 08:56, 8 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

For that, please make an adminship request on a general discussion page (or a specific RFA page) on the new wiki after the import is finished. You can then request admin rights on m:SRP. --MF-W {a, b} 19:02, 8 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The import is now finished. Please report to me any pages that are still missing. Best of luck with the new wiki! --MF-W {a, b} 19:42, 8 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) It seems to me that if a project is started here at Incubator and is then approved and moved out, any test administrators working on the project here ought to start out automatically with at least a finite term as administrator on the new project. It could be three or six months, or it could be to the date that the test-admin rights would have expired here. But otherwise any new project has an immediate vulnerability to vandals. I've got to believe that a test-admin that worked to develop a project to approval is going to pay more attention to defending his/her wiki than the small-wiki monitoring team, with all due respect to them. StevenJ81 (talk) 16:40, 9 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
A few years ago we (Incubator admins) wanted this to be made policy. However, back then, it was rejected by stewards (I was not yet one). Nothing however prevents stewards from giving temporary adminship on a new project after only a request on SRP without local RFA. Sometimes such are accepted, sometimes rejected (I prefer to not act on them for obvious conflict of interest). It's therefore the best and easiest to start a local RFA and link to it on m:SRP at the same time. --MF-W {a, b} 18:58, 9 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
In our Wikipedia, the only one who has a bit of wiki knowledge is me, that's the reason why I asked to be the administrator. Besides that, I would like to ask for help regarding templates like this that doesn't open and why I can't add interwikis. Katxis (talk) 19:57, 9 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This is already mentioned on the bug: phabricator:T134017#2277505. --MF-W {a, b} 20:47, 9 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

MediaWiki:Edittools

Hi. Either generally or for our specific projects (Wt/lad, Wb/lad), can you add the Hebrew alphabet group from User talk:StevenJ81 into Edittools? We do sometimes have Hebrew-script pages in Ladino, so this would be quite helpful to us. Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 21:55, 11 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

User:StevenJ81: Sorry for the delay. It is now added. --MF-W {a, b} 22:35, 24 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. No worries on the delay.
If that set is available generally (as opposed to just on the Ladino projects) you might prefer to simply label it "Hebrew" rather than "Alefbet ebreo", since most of the sets are labeled in English. StevenJ81 (talk) 22:40, 24 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You're right, I changed it. --MF-W {a, b} 11:12, 25 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, first of all, thanks for protecting that page. However, the IP range used by a LTA is already globally blocked by a steward, and I think protection is not necessary anymore. Can you unprotect that page please? Thanks, Pokéfan95 (talk) 12:25, 26 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Follow-up to our discussion

OK. I left him a note on his talk page (in the section you started). I went through his contribs and found one page to SD for BLP violation (check the maintenance category).

More to the point, though, on 29 May he made nearly 100 page creations for potential new project pages (i.e., Wx/xxx pages). As far as I know, there are no requests at Meta, and no real work going on within these tests. So these pages are just disruptive and clogging up the system, as far as I can tell. I think he did it because he could, but for no other reason.

Finally, though, it occurred to me as I was writing to him: I can't actually find a copy of any of the pillar policies (NPOV, BLP, AGF, etc.) on Incubator at all. I think people like you and me who are veterans around Wikimedia projects understand that they apply everywhere and always. And it just feels unlikely that a complete newbie would come to Incubator before participating at other projects, but you never know, right? And maybe a complete newbie doesn't understand the basic rules around here.

We should probably add something like the following to I:Policy, after due discussion on the community portal, of course:

 • Unless otherwise specified within a test, the general policies and guidelines that apply to the English-language version of the given project apply to the test project. Test-admins (where appropriate) or Incubator administrators and bureaucrats will fill all roles and responsibilities not fully supported here (like ArbComs and such).
 • Test projects may choose to use the version of a general policy adapted by an existing, different-language project, especially if it is likely to be closer than English on its language cascade. (Examples: Haitian creole using French, Ladino using Spanish.) If so, that requires at least a notice on a policy page of a test project.
 • Test projects may further adapt policy to their own specific requirements. Such an adaptation requires (a) the on-wiki consensus of the test community, and (b) acknowledgement by Incubator admins/'crats that the adaptations do not violate the broad rules of Wikimedia projects.

Just my thoughts... StevenJ81 (talk) 14:36, 3 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The wx/xxx pages are not disruptive as one of my interests is foreign languages and me and my friends will work on them! --CasetteTapeMaster (talk)
You and your friends cannot create 100 meaningful tests here. If you are really that talented in languages, pick 5 to 10 tests and do them well.
You are not permitted to remove a deletion notice from a page you create. You may separately request that the deletion not happen, but you cannot remove my request. And unless you are in fact the person whom you named over on that page, stating that the person is associated with TOHS inherently becomes a BLP violation, because it provides unsourced real-life information about an individual who is not notable (and therefore does not deserve to be in an encyclopedia). StevenJ81 (talk) 16:36, 3 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Your idea has a good intention, however I fear in this way it would be too complicated; especially when "taking over" enwiki's policies which are too complex for small projects in the size of test-wikis. But it makes sense to have a page or several ones for describing the basic rules of the "five pillars". --MF-W {a, b} 17:00, 10 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

OS Request

Hi, and thanks for taking care of this situation. As a follow-up: as a steward you have OS, right? I would recommend that you OS the nine contributions prior to mine on Incubator:Community Portal. They contain the same BLP violations we have discussed previously. Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 12:49, 5 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Well, as a steward, I can use OS on all wikis which don't have local oversighters or which are not my homewikis. So I can't do it here. However I think for this case, a simple version deletion is sufficient (I'm not even sure whether these people are real or not). --MF-W {a, b} 16:56, 10 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Redundant pipes left behind after import

Since the content of jam: is almost readable to a native English speaker (/reader), I have been doing a lot of "cleanup" work in that wiki since it was imported from the Incubator. It took me a long time to figure out that the huge number of "redundantly-piped" links that I've been fixing over there were probably all a result of links like

Jumieka

being auto-converted to links like

Jumieka

during the importing process. Assuming this is true, shouldn't such "redundant" piped links be converted "all the way" to

Jumieka

instead? I guess this is the first time I've ever actually checked the articles of a local wiki after its content was imported from the Incubator, so I don't know if this "problem" I'm pointing out is typical or whether something went wrong this time. - dcljr (talk) 11:36, 18 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This is a usual occurence. The links can be fixed or not, as it has no effect on whether the link works or not. --MF-W {a, b} 14:45, 18 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
True, but it can be confusing to editors, and on some pages the duplication can almost double the size of the wiki source text! :) BTW, what I meant was: can this not be fixed automatically before/during importing? - dcljr (talk) 15:10, 18 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I can try to do that next time when I import. --MF-W {a, b} 18:44, 18 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Can you lock editing for IP/anons on Wp/grc/Σερβία please? I have applied a 2 hour ban but it is almost certain that the IP will return with the same intent again. There has been edit warring for some time now that has to do with inserting a picture of the country (Serbia, including Kosovo). Query

Hi, I saw you were involved in discussions in 2013 about Wikivoyage forks. Would the Wikitravel datadumps still be of interest? These are new, I'm doing them now. Just finished Esperanto in a test run, about 30 Mb uncompressed. They'll be archived here. But I figured they could be used to jump start some of the editions that are here on incubator now? When you reply could you tag me so I get a notification? I'm not active on these parts, thanks Acer (talk) 23:35, 3 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello User:Acer. At the moment it seems like there is no interest in developing Wikivoyage in these languages; therefore in my opinion it would make no sense to import the dumps. However if interest in one of the languages rises again, the users can surely use them and will find them helpful. --MF-W {a, b} 21:52, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'll see if I can recruit some volunteers over at jaWP at least. The Japanese edition of Wikitravel is the only one besides English that is still reasonably active so there's demand for it. I feel we might be in a kind of chicken and egg situation. I'll let you know if I get any takers, thanks Acer (talk) 09:49, 9 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

All done. Here's the complete WT dump. All languages Acer (talk) 12:26, 11 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. --MF-W {a, b} 22:58, 11 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

My old account WKDx417 had robbed.

Hello. Mr Warburg! Now I use the new account to tell you. My old account, WKDx417, was INACCESSIBLE since mid-August 2016. It just compromised. (see special:diff/3894399). Should User:WKDx417 be indef blocked? --PQ77wd (talk) 09:17, 19 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Do you want to say that this edit was done by someone else than you? Also, is there any proof that the account was compromised or did you only lose the password? --MF-W {a, b} 22:18, 19 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You misunderstand this. I said was NOT special:diff/3834054, The correct one is special:diff/3894399. (Excuse me! special:diff/3834054 was I have typed too fast and mistaken the next early edits.). To get back to the point: I tell the detailed circumstances for my old account, WKDx417 was inaccessible. My old account, WKDx417, can access to all wikis on early-August. Unfortunely, when I logged in my old account WKDx417 to all wikis, I have seen my account have already posted a plenty of sports person in Wikimedia Commons (see here and there. I won't post these photos like this.) and any wikis become worse and worse (Normally, My old account never been like this). When I use the account , WKDx417 and his correct password to login again on mid-August. The wiki login page told my username and password error. I suspect that my old account WKDx417 have robbed. Due to my new account first come at here on September 2016. So I just tell you my old account is WKDx417. Now I make the SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT in my page. --PQ77wd (talk) 00:41, 20 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. As long as your old account doesn't edit here, I don't think anything needs to be done. --MF-W {a, b} 21:16, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Import to Finnish Wikivoyage

Hello, can you import Finnish Wikitravel dumps to the Finnish Wikivoyage Incubator? Or can you give me rights to do the importing? --Kulmalukko (talk) 18:18, 23 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

There are over 3000 pages in the dump, and many of them are templates, talk pages, user pages, etc. I guess there will also be conflicts with existing Incubator page titles. How should this be solved? --MF-W {a, b} 01:22, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
User:Kulmalukko I can provide a customized XML which can address these concerns by removing anything that is not wanted/causes issues. I have an upcoming exam at the end of the month but after that I can get to it. Acer (talk) 14:44, 7 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Acer. --Kulmalukko (talk) 20:15, 7 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It is difficult and error-prone to import pages into Incubator, because all page titles and preferably all links would need to have "Wy/fi/" added to it. If this is done to the XML file, then it could indeed be imported. However, depending on how active the test wiki is and the former Wikitravel was, we could also just approve fi.wikivoyage.org and directly import it to there... SPQRobin (talk) 16:18, 9 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Then it is better to create the Fi Wikivoyage and put Wikitravel content in there. The original Fi Wikitravel was active, and the Fi Wikivoyage status have been approved for a few years. (If I understood correctly, Fi Wikivoyage should have been created years ago, with no need to work with Incubator.) --Kulmalukko (talk) 19:20, 9 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Overview

Currently there are 21 language editions over at Wikitravel. We have 17 Wikivoyages. 13 of these exist in both projects. 4 are unique to Wikivoyage (Vietnamese, Greek, Ukrainian and Persian -last to be created, 2 years ago). Finally, 8 languages are Wikitravel-only at the moment, though they have all been started in Incubator except for Catalan. I'll list them below with their current status. All projects for which there were database dumps available at the time of the migration in 2013 were fast-tracked and approved. Wikitravel then disabled their API and dumps for some editions could not be generated. These are now available for all languages.

 • Finnish (approved and currently active)
 • Japanese (approved)
 • Hungarian (approved}
 • Esperanto (verified as eligible and currently active)
 • Arabic (verified as eligible and currently active)
 • Hindi (verified as eligible and currently active)
 • Korean (verified as eligible)
 • Catalan (not requested)

Considering that the dumps are now available, can we fast-track the other languages like it was done last time? Move them to that separate Wikivoyage section? And get the active ones started? It's been two years since the last Wikivoyage edition was launched, it would be great if we could get Finnish, Esperanto, Arabic and maybe Hindi started by merging the dumps with the new content from the Incubator. Maybe arrange for the new languages to be advertised with page-banners at their respective Wikipedias. If all four launch at the same time maybe I can even get something into the Signpost. PS: MF-Warburg, feel free to move this discussion someplace else if you don't want to host it here, don't want to hijack your talk page Acer (talk) 15:26, 10 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The situation is/was a bit more complicated. I wrote a summary some years ago on Incubator:Wikivoyage_import. Basically, Finnish, Hungarian and Japanese should have been created, but when we got to them (the others were done first because there was hardly any interest by users in these), there was no possibility anymore for importing them. Now that we have these dumps available (or will soon have them available as you are planning to create a "clean" version of the Finnish file), we can create new subdomains and import them. However I'd prefer to not do this if there is not at least someone interested in it, otherwise we will end up with large unmaintained wikis. For Finnish, there is of course interest. - The other languages should be approved if and when they meet the test-wiki activity requirements on Incubator, unless it turns out that in reality, they had much more than "no meaningful content". - Doesn't the Signpost report about all new projects anymore? --MF-W {a, b} 14:52, 11 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I take the point about meaningful content. I hadn't considered that. As mentioned by Robin below, Esperanto WT indeed doesn't seem to have anything useful. I'll check the others later on. But even without considering the dumps, can you take a look at Arabic? Have they met the requirements? There was a question about it on the langcom talk page last month but it never got answered. Regarding the signpost, it writes a small note about new projects but I was thinking of something more visible like a feature on the current status of Wikivoyage. As for the XML's I'll start working on them after the 23rd this month. Shouldn't take long to clean them up. Acer (talk) 00:12, 14 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The Arabian Wikivoyage test doesn't yet have a long enough continuous activity for approval. --MF-W {a, b} 11:23, 17 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It would be great if the Esperanto Wikivoyage could get started soon on its own domain. But I don't think it would be a good idea to merge the Wikitravel dump. There are only 505 pages on the Esperanto Wikitravel and most of them are empty pages with only one single line NameOfCity estas en NameOfCountry., you can see this for yourself by clicking a few times on "Hazarda paĝo" (Random page). The Esperanto Wikitravel even contains spam on a few pages, the last edit was in October 2015 and there were only 7 edits in 2015. Robin van der Vliet (talk) 15:15, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

FI WT import tasks

User:Kulmalukko User:SPQRobin Ok, I'm back and started working on this. Right now I'm doing a new dump of fi-Wikitravel so we have the latest edits. It'ĺl be finished in about an hour. After that I'll start the clean up. I propose we import straight to fi.wikivoyage.org and the existing material on incubator can be added in manually afterwards. I'll list the clean up tasks below, if anyone thinks of anything else just add to the list and I'll get to it. I expect to have the final, cleaned up XML ready for import by the end of the week.

XML clean-up tasks:

 • add the following to every edit for attribution: - Import from wikitravel.org/fi
 • Add WT prefix to usernames in history and to existing user pages. (to avoid conflicts with existing Wikimedia usernames)
 • Change WT namespace to WV.
 • Rename policy pages/templates when necessary.

That's everything I can think of. Acer (talk) 15:02, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good. --Kulmalukko (talk) 17:51, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Can you clarify the first point? Where will "Import from wikitravel.org/fi" be added?
I think user pages don't need to be imported at all. I also wonder about the WT namespace; especially with regard to policies it might be better if the community develops it itself instead of having all the previous stuff there which may or may not be valid anymore. --MF-W {a, b} 12:01, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the first point, I meant like this. Every revision imported from WT will be marked as such for attribution.
I checked the numbers, there are 108 pages in Wikitravel namespace. 104 user pages and ~450 user talk pages. I have already renamed all user pages to "(WT-fi) username" to avoid conflicts but I can have them removed if you prefer. I'd like to keep the user talk pages though since they might contain useful discussions about the articles.
Regarding the WT namespace/policy pages, some seem to be translations from EnWT which were imported to EnWV and haven't really changed much since. There's a full list here. That said, not speaking Finnish, I can't really comment on their usefulness/relevance nor decide which ones to keep or not. So we either keep everything or remove everything. Considering that there are only ~100 pages, maybe we can import them and afterwards User:Kulmalukko can check and remove the outdated ones? Acer (talk) 19:40, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, import those pages. (Anyway Finnish users have to check them and maybe add manually corresponding content from incubator.) --Kulmalukko (talk) 20:32, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I agree with Kulmalukko that all of those project pages can be imported. It's not too much work to later check them out and delete unneeded pages. --Stryn (talk) 16:47, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, sorry for the delay, had a nasty bit of food poisoning. All better now, and the dump is finished and ready for import, you can get it here It's a 3.5mb 7zip but it unpacks to over 300mb. There were a few things I didn't do, like removing the Wikitravel Shared (their version of Commons) category from pages as I didn't want to mess up the history, but it should be easy enough to remove them with a bot. I kept the policy pages as requested. If I missed anything, let me know Acer (talk) 16:09, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the dump. When is the Fi Wikivoyage published and the dump imported to it, User:MF-Warburg? --Kulmalukko (talk) 16:38, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the delay from me as well. Thanks user:Acer for the dump. - user:Kulmalukko: I will track the further progress of the wiki creation at m:Requests_for_new_languages/Wikivoyage_Finnish#Progress. For now please check whether the settings there are still the desired ones. --MF-W {a, b} 04:39, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Great! Thank you for moving this forward. PS: I took the liberty of fixing that link for you Acer (talk) 08:50, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, I've just re-uploaded the dump file to fix a page title issue. I've updated the download link above. Acer (talk) 09:33, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

An idea of improve test wiki

Hello, I have an idea of improve test wiki, if you use the following source code for “Recent changes” link, it would link to mobile page when you view on your phone.

* [?&limit=250&days=20&testwiki=PAGENAME ]

Great Brightstar (talk) 09:23, 7 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to insert it but it breaks the template ([25]). --MF-W {a, b} 14:34, 11 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Our recent email discussion

There are still some edits left over from that situation. Would you like me to clean them up, or would you prefer to do that yourself? StevenJ81 (talk) 18:50, 14 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I thought all objectionable edits were undone, but if that is not the case, please feel free to clean them up. --MF-W {a, b} 02:55, 15 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"Main page" of a test

Hi, MF-W. I've been wondering/wanting to fix something, and hope you can help. Incubator has a setting allowing a user to set a "home" test project, and provides links to the "Main page", "Recent changes" and "Random page" from that particular test project. But I get an odd result with Wt/lad, which is my own "home" test project. So, for example, if I change my test project settings appropriately, the "Main page" can link to

But if my test project is set to Wt/lad, I get Wt/lad and not Wt/lad/La Hoja Primera. Any thoughts why this might be? Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 19:58, 29 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I would guess that Special:MyMainPage takes the Main Page name from MediaWiki:Mainpage/lad, and falls back to Wt/lad since Wt/lad/La Primera Hoja doesn't exist. --MF-W {a, b} 23:30, 29 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That was exactly it. Thanks. All fixed. StevenJ81 (talk) 23:59, 29 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
(Mind you, why we're not using consistent names I don't entirely know. But I'm leaving that to the actual Ladino experts on the projects.) StevenJ81 (talk) 00:00, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ingush Wikipedia

Hi there! I would like to ask when will the Ingush Wikipedia can open? We have translated everything and the activity is really good. Is there something else that we should do? Ilya Drakonov (talk) 11:44, 3 December 2016 (UTC).[reply]

Hi, I have proposed the approval of Ingush Wikipedia in the language committee. We will now deliberate on it and search verification of the content from a linguistic viewpoint etc. In the meantime, please continue to edit. You could also check whether the settings indicated on m:Requests_for_new_languages/Wikipedia_Ingush are the correct ones. --MF-W {a, b} 23:41, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. The settings are OK. We are ready and will continue editing. Cheers, Ilya Drakonov (talk) 11:36, 5 December 2016 (UTC).[reply]

Wp/emo

See Wp/emo. I wanted to delete this empty test because the ISO code was retired. But I thought it worthwhile to leave some information behind. When I used the non-prefixed Soft redirect, I got an error message at the top of the page, and membership in five or six maintenance categories. So for now I actually created a prefixed template. But ... is there a way for an admin to suppress that behavior? StevenJ81 (talk) 17:29, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

use prefixed copy would need to be changed in order to not work on info pages. However, in this case it's anyway better to use retired code. --MF-W {a, b} 17:39, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 17:41, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Items to bring to the attention of the LC

Hi, MF-W. Aside from my lengthy (sorry) descriptions at I:AN, here are a couple of items that I think just require some attention from the Language Committee directly. More may follow over time; don't disturb your holidays over them:

 • The perpetually open conversion als > gsw
 • A similar conversion arc > syc for Syriac Wikipedia. (It's officially called Aramaic Wikipedia at Meta, which would demand arc. But it describes itself as Syriac Wikipedia on its main page.)
 • Lingwa de planeta Wiktionary. The test has pretty substantial content in it. There has been a request open at the Language Committee for a while, which was left open because an application for an ISO code was pending. Well, that application was rejected, and as far as I can tell nothing else is pending. So in theory, at least, LC should reject this request, and then we should archive and delete the test. Up to you and the LC; I'm just nudging a little.

I think there are a couple of other tests in similar conditions. As I go back through the categories I'll let you know. StevenJ81 (talk) 16:17, 19 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. For simplicity, I'll put answers in-line under your comments. --MF-W {a, b} 12:32, 20 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
