Levantine Arabic test Wikipedia

[edit source]

Howdy and sorry to bother you. I've noticed that you're very active on the Moroccan Wikipedia, and I have a few questions, as I'm interested in letting the Levantine Arabic Wikipedia (currently a test wiki) become a useful resource.

1. How did you all find speakers of Darija who wanted to contribute?

2. What were and are the hardest challenges that you face(ed)?

3. How do you all deal with multiple spellings, local variants, and other language issues? FunLater (talk) 20:24, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello @FunLater. I'll do my best to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge:
  1. How did you all find speakers of Darija who wanted to contribute?
    • I can't say much about the Moroccan Darija Wikipedia when it was still in the incubator, since I wasn't aware of its existence at the time. In my case, I found the project by chance while editing the English Wikipedia, and immediately decided to join. If you manage to find 3 to 5 people who work on the test wiki for a few months, making at least 12 edits each per month consistently (see at the bottom of this page the latest activities of your test wiki), it will be picked as ready, and will appear on the main page of the Incubator. The next step would be to make a formal request in metawiki to launch a new Wikipedia, and once it's approved, you're good to go. I'm sure many Levantine Wikipedians will join once they see it as a live project. Now to get those 3 to 5 people, you'll probably have to find individuals or groups that are already known to be interested in Levantine Arabic as a written language, or have been engaged in writing texts in it. There could be groups on Facebook or other social media for example. It's best to avoid trying to convince people who did not express interest in Levantine Arabic, to join the project, as that will just create resistence and waste a lot of time unnecessarily. A small team of people who edit frequently would be more efficient as a start. You will also probably need a techy in the team to overcome any technical challenges, and there are many in test and small wikis. Maybe @Anass Sedrati or @Reda benkhadra can elaborate more in this regard, since they helped launch arywiki when it was still in the Incubator.
  2. What were and are the hardest challenges that you face(ed)?
    • There are several big challenges: finding enthusiastic editors (question 1), language and standardization (question 3), and some technical challenges. As I mentioned, having a techy in the team would be very helpful, but also each member should try to inform themselves about technical aspects of the project, as much as they can grasp (without losing motivation). It's also important to set core administrative rules progressively as the project grows in size (content and editors), in such a way as to respond to, but also anticipate challenges, such as disagreements and vandalism. Creating a roadmap for the test wiki, from gathering the team to launching the live version, is also important, so try to get informed about the requirements and conditions for the Wiki to be accepted, and how long it'll take you to get there.
  3. How do you all deal with multiple spellings, local variants, and other language issues?
    • The first challenge for Darija when it was still in the Incubator was the script: Latin or Arabic. Eventually the later was adopted because most of the few publications in it (poetry and some short stories and novels mostly), and online texts maily on social media, are written in the Arabic alphabet, though people often use the Latin script, especially on short text messages, for convenience. When it comes to spelling, our guiding principles are:
    1. readers should understand what is written as clearly as possible
    2. editors should have as much as freedom as possible to write in the way they feel comfortable, as long as they do not break the first principle
These principles can be applied on many levels, from the choice of letters (e.g. the use of additional letters such as پ = p, ڤ = v, hard g = ݣ), to the choice of words and expressions, to their spelling. For example, if a word or an expression is only used in a subdialect and is unknown to most other native speakers, it should be explained as a note on the same page. It would also be very useful to gather a corpus of works on linguistics about Levantine Arabic, as well as dictionaries, and any other useful resources, just like we did here on the Moroccan Darija Wiktionary test wiki. In general, having multiple spellings is not an issue as long as the content is understood by everyone. If the variants cause misunderstanding, then the matter should be discussed by the contributors to reach a consensus, or in the worst case with a vote, then documented on a special page for such language-related issues. To give you a concrete example: in spoken Darija for "and" people either say "w" or "u". The later is often written أو by some people. But since this causes confusion with the Standard Arabic أو = or, which some people also use in spoken and written Darija, we decided to ban this spelling completely (even for "or", since we also have other variants ولّا، أولا، ؤلا). Instead, editors are allowed to write either و = w, or ؤ = u. You can see here the page with the list of spelling rules. As you notice, it's purposefully kept as short as possible. If an official or highly influencial consensus on spelling rules for Darija is reached outside of Wikipedia, e.g. the government of Morocco decides to recognize Darija as a national language, and issues an official standard, then the situation will change, and the new standard will likely be applied on Wikipedia as well, as long as it's accepted by the Wikipedia community.
I don't know if you're satisfied with these answers, but feel free to ask any follow-up questions any time. Best regards.-- Ideophagous (talk) 22:21, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
