what I want to do in the long term[edit | edit source]

3 things:

  • RFNL "management": more intuitive layout of the table? idea: special:permalink/982962. Also: automatic addition of new requests to the table (via RC-watching bot)? Bot development already in progress
  • Template set for new wikis/tests
  • WIL tech helpdesk?

General & perennial planning[edit | edit source]


Documentation for different target groups[edit | edit source]

Some groups are probably more important than others
  • A) total newbies (no experience with editing wikis + don't know WP/WMF at all)
  • B) ppl who know WP/WMF projects + read them in an already existing subdomain
  • C) ppl who already edit(ed) in WMF projects (but just a bit)
  • D) ppl who have more experience, but not crosswiki (e.g. highly esteemed users from en/de who maybe even are admins there but never edit outside their project (except Commons or so)) Such users might come from Spanish, Portuguese, Hindhi/other Indian Wikipedias = from the Foundation's focus areas - users who are able to speak these official languages of that region, but also another one ("native")
  • E) ppl who are active crosswiki / "people who know Meta" ;-)
    • "Ok guys, just tell me where I need to create the pages"

to do: ensure that documentation is suitable to all of them AND/OR write special pages aimed at certain groups

Rough outline for a revision of the current documentation at User:MF-Warburg/soyouwanna (could be ONE SINGLE CENTRAL page which should be the first access point). Then different options to get further information, cf. "You as (wannabe) creator" etc. vs. "Group E" (maybe Gr. E only needs that rough outline, while gr. A needs that plus "How to edit", "How to write articles" etc.) + "How to use Incubator" (prefixes). - - - Involve BetaWV, OldWS?

Ideas to test our documentation's usability (once we improved it)[edit | edit source]

  1. go to #wikimedia-stewards (E) and #wikipedia-de (D)
  2. ask for volunteers who want to give their opinion about our current documentation
  3. tell them to imagine they speak a language of an Incubator WP test / a language not yet represented on Incubator+WMF at all
  4. they already edit de.wp / en.wp / meta / whatever, now want to start WP in their language
  5. how would they do it? (tell them already that Incubator is the right place to look or not?*)
  • e. g.: "The Langcom (so Incubator doesnt need to be mentioned) wants to find out how good the usability of the current process bla bla is. Therefore, please imagine the following: [see above point 3,4]. Try to do it & tell us what happened :-)"

Content starter help[edit | edit source]

  • a set of simple template which can be easily translated and used on testwiki(pedia)s ("most needed templates")
  • "best practices", "how to start with the content"
  • a start...

Feedback/Communication[edit | edit source]

  • Establish a kind of direct contact between the Langcom and test contributors [also needed between Incubator admins and contributors]
    • Current situation: people are often not very talkative at all, also not to Incubator feedback or question pages - maybe because of insufficient English knowledge? (a lot of communication between users about approval processes seems to happen on Incubator on user talk pages in Russian e.g.)
    • Let ppl know if there's a certain problem (Example: to be added, I already have sth in mind)
    • However, recently, groups of people who are organised well get in direct contact with the Langcom (e.g. Wikimedia South Africa; or Indian groups who convinced Langcom to approve their project because of a soon-to-happen conference or so. - SIDE NOTE: with the survey, ask these projects how much they think the prior approval (so to say in a state of unreadiness) helped them "um aus dem Quark zu kommen".

"Survey" for wikis ca. 1 year after subdomain creation[edit | edit source]

  • How has activity developed after the subdomain's creation? (in comparision with the situation on Incubator)
    • more / less / nothing at all anymore... [possibly: why?]
  • Easier to edit now / be found?
    • for you
    • for new users [Was this subdomain "found" by people who would probably never have accessed it on Incubator?]
  • Reception of the new wiki:
    • in media?
    • in friends/family circles?
  • Expectations: fulfilled or not? deceptionsthe french meaning of the word... disappointments?
  • What would you've done better / in a different way in hindsight?
    • on Incubator
    • on own subdomain
  • What would you've wished would've been different on Incubator / during the testing phase?
  • Could Langcom improve? If so, how? What didn't you like?
  • + What was nice/easy/desirable on Incubator? :-)

I:Wikis clean-up[edit | edit source]

Doesn't need to be done very often, if edits on Template:Tests/.. are monitored.

  1. Check whether any of the tests listed on Template:Tests/wx actually doesn't have content (status "tocreate"=just the info page exists). These should be removed from T:T/wx then. Also tests that moved to an own subdomain shouldn't be listed there any longer, of course.
  2. Check whether there are any tests of the status "open" (=> more pages than just the info page exist) which are not listed on T:T/wx. These should be added then.

Done at the beginning of 2012:

  • Wb diff of actions: [1]
  • Wn diff of actions: [2]
  • Wq diff of actions: [3] (All non-listed tests with pages>2 were added (only wq/ang); all tocreate ones were removed (listed here as "0 / y"))
  • Wt diff of actions: [4] (+khw, +inh; remove "tocreate"s (0 pages); remove or (approved))
  • Wp diff of actions: [5]
