So you want to have [be active in] a (new) Wikimedia project in your language. It's simple, there are the following conditions:
  • An active test project on the Multilingual Wikisource (Wikisource only), Beta Wikiversity (Wikiversity only), or the Incubator (all other projects), needs to be built up. This means that you can already make contributions like to a normal Wikimedia project. This will prove that there are enough dedicated contributors to maintain the project.
  • Interface translation: To make it possible for every speaker of the language to use the wiki properly, the MediaWiki interface needs to be translated. For a first project in a language it is necessary to localise the "most used MediaWiki messages". For any subsequent project in a language, you need to show that the localisation is still going on at a pace acceptable for the language and its speakers. The translations can be done at translatewiki.net, and only need to be finished before the final approval.

These are the content requirements. But before you start, please be aware that the are some restrictions concerning which languages are acceptable.

Requisites for eligibility

  • check that the project does not already exist (see list).
  • obtain an ISO 639 code (tet).
  • ensure the requested language is sufficiently unique that it could not exist on a more general wiki.
  • ensure that there are a sufficient number of native editors of that language to merit an edition in that language. (For constructed languages, there must be sufficient recognition as determined by discussion.)
Now ok, the formalities are ok for my language, I [and bunch of other people] are interested, so how to do something?
  • You as (wannabe) creator ... --> Help:Manual
  • You as (wannabe) contributor to a semi-empty test: info page exists, but not much else
  • You as person interested in an already exisiting project... --> search wikis etc. (see the Main Page)
What was it again with the interface translations?
What is this Meta request stuff all about?
