Welcome to Wikimedia Incubator!
At the right there are some important links, and here are some tips and info:
- If you haven't created a user page yet, please create one with for example Babel templates on it.
- You can select your interface language in your preferences.
- If you make articles, templates or categories, don't forget to add a prefix!
- If your knowledge of English is good, you can help with translating pages to other languages you know, so more people can understand it!
- If you want to translate the interface, please go to Translatewiki.net and follow the instructions.

User pages within tests
[edit source]I don't quite understand what you mean when you say, "Wp/nod/User:RichardW57/sandbox will become Wp/nod/ᨲ᩠ᩅᩫᨾᩮᩬᩥᨦ." If this is a sandbox for a mainspace page, then you should either go ahead and add it to the test project as Wp/nod/ᨲ᩠ᩅᩫᨾᩮᩬᩥᨦ or make it a subpage of your user page (as "User:RichardW57/Wp/nod/ᨲ᩠ᩅᩫᨾᩮᩬᩥᨦ" or the like. If this is a sandbox for your user page on that future project, then you need to make it a subpage of your regular user page here. For a whole variety of reasons, we do not want to have future exporter-importers needing to deal with moving user pages when creating new wikis.
- See my own User:StevenJ81/Wt/lad and User:StevenJ81/Wb/yi for examples how to handle. Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:15, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
The objective is to create a page ᨲ᩠ᩅᩫᨾᩮᩬᩥᨦ in the Northern Thai that is in parts eminently suited to an encyclopaedia and in the other parts merely useful to establishing a Northern Thai wikipedia in the Lanna script (script code lana). I envisage some of the merely useful parts ultimately being moved to a howto page, and I think some of the lists of compound vowels should ultimately be moved to articles on the spelling systems of the individual languages.
The method of constructing it is to bolt together the English and Thai wikipedia articles, translate to Northern Thai, add a section on how Unicode is intended to represent words in the Lanna script, and reference fonts that can render Tai Tham in Unicode in very modern browsers as the proposals intended. (Microsoft's 'support' for the script was a major step back - without it, the script would be rendered properly in at least Firefox and Chrome - the renderers that use HarfBuzz. Very few fonts work round the limitations of the Universal Shaping Engine.) Gross inadequacies and errors will be corrected in the process of constructing the article. As I am doing the translation and the composition, the language will have to be reviewed by a native speaker - it is at present full of typos (mostly of the 'but' v. 'nut' type - I am using a spelling dictionary of unclear legality), Anglicisms and Siamicisms. Once the review has been acted on, I intend to simply copy the content to Wp/nod/ᨲ᩠ᩅᩫᨾᩮᩬᩥᨦ and delete the sandbox. Until the review has been acted upon, I do not regard the page as fit to present itself as a *Northern Thai* wikipedia article. Some review comments will be ignored. For example, there is a community desire to have a biscript wikipedia. Someone who only reads the article in the Thai script presentation may very well not know what an independent vowel is. I would defer creating the explanation to the evolution of the wikipedia page.
There is a technical problem with creating a page named "User:RichardW57/Wp/nod/ᨲ᩠ᩅᩫᨾᩮᩬᩥᨦ" or "User:RichardW57/Wp/nod/sandbox". It would happily use a template {{xyz}} instead of {{Wp/nod/xyz}}. I'd prefer the project page to use templates and modules that worked tolerably. I had this trouble with the draft User:RichardW57/ᩀᩪᨶᩥᨣᩰᩫ᩠ᨯ; the problem only surfaced after I had renamed it Wp/nod/ᩀᩪᨶᩥᨣᩰᩫ᩠ᨯ. What is the solution? -- RichardW57 (talk) 23:29, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
Sandbox doesn't work as expected
[edit source]Calling @MF-Warburg for consultation: user's sandbox doesn't work the way he expects. Do the classes "reflist [type]" (e.g., "reflist alpha-lower") exist here? StevenJ81 (talk) 14:33, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
I don't expect them to work 'natively' at all - I don't believe CSS supports that. Even decimal numbers have a problem - does one use sacred digits (U+1A9x) or profane digits (U+1A8x), or even just resort to European digits? In Thai, the choice of decimal system seems to have an emotional meaning. For citations, I've simply used the page number of the original - the reader of the page presented in the Tai Tham script can be expected to understand European and Thai digits, though a Lao reader may have difficulty with some Tai Tham digits, and transliterating Thai alphabetic page numbers would be a recipe for disaster. (Thai alphabetic page numbering seem to work like English page numbering in Roman numerals in its semantics.) --RichardW57 (talk) 00:31, 25 July 2018 (UTC)
