Slavey Wiktionary[edit source]

Hi, NWTLibrarian. Welcome to Incubator, and thank you very much both for starting this project and for what I (at least) think is the important work you are doing in supporting this language. I would like to ask you a question, and also make a point to you, both of which I think will be useful.

  • Question. Are North Slavey and South Slavey mutually intelligible? I gather they are, at least if the English Wikipedia article is accurate. The reason I ask is that technically den is a macrolanguage code, and on the whole the Wikimedia Foundation likes new projects to be at the individual language level, not the macrolanguage level. But, of course, the distinction between languages and dialects is sometimes fuzzy, and if North Slavey and South Slavey are mutually intelligible, then it's fine to have a single project for the language.
  • Point. An eligible language project can be started on Incubator any time, and in theory can stay here forever. And a Wiktionary here is just as accessible publicly, and just as useful, as one in an independent subdomain (e.g., den.wiktionary.org). If you are fine with the project staying on Incubator indefinitely, you don't have to do anything differently. But if you want this project to become an "independent" Wiktionary in its own project space, then you will need to gather a community of speakers to help you work on the project. The language committee will not approve the creation of an independent project unless it's supported by a community of speakers—no one-person shows allowed. So it's up to you, but I wanted to be sure you were aware of that.

Thank you for being here, and good luck. If you have any questions, {{ping}} me. StevenJ81 (talk) (Incubator administrator) 12:50, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
