Welcome to Wikimedia Incubator!

At the right there are some important links, and here are some tips and info:

  • If you haven't created a user page yet, please create one with for example Babel templates on it.
  • You can select your interface language in your preferences.
  • If you make articles, templates or categories, don't forget to add a prefix!
  • If your knowledge of English is good, you can help with translating pages to other languages you know, so more people can understand them!
  • If you want to translate the interface, please go to Translatewiki.net and follow their instructions.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask them on Incubator:Community Portal.

Main page creation

[edit source]

Hello @Ferien: Still I have a doubt for creating the omp main page Wp/omp/ꯃꯂꯨ ꯑꯣꯢꯄ ꯂꯥꯃꯥꯢ. It needs some extra technical efforts. I mean special templates to make it look special and unique than normal pages. What shall I do? Will you help me please? Or, whom shall we consult? Haoreima (talk) 12:42, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Haoreima: I would recommend asking on the Incubator:Community Portal, they may know. I have had no experience in building main pages before. Also, once you are done with that, ensure that Wp/omp redirects to the main page. --Ferien (talk) 12:44, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
But in case of mni Wp/mni remains independent from Wp/mni/ꯃꯔꯨꯑꯣꯏꯕ ꯂꯃꯥꯏ (mni main page). Haoreima (talk) 12:50, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima: Oh, actually, Wp/omp should be like Wp/mni with the {{test wiki}} template. Sorry, I am still quite new here :) --Ferien (talk) 12:53, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Me too! I also have less knowledge. So, we should better consult some experts. Haoreima (talk) 12:56, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima: Also, I've seen that there may be some issues turning the incubator project into a Wikipedia, as Old Manipuri is an ancient language. It is possible, but there may be some issues getting it its own wikipedia domain. --Ferien (talk) 12:57, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
One problem is that in the page you recently created, the redirect of Old Manipuri goes to en:Meitei language and same for omp. Unfortunately, there's no en article for Old Manipuri language. But in simple wiki, I have already created simple:Old Manipuri. What shall we do? Haoreima (talk) 13:00, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Maybe I can create an article for Old Manipuri on enwiki, depending on how much coverage there is in reliable sources. Let me check draft space to see whether anyone is building an article there.. --Ferien (talk) 13:01, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Haoreima (talk) 13:04, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Ferien: While doing so, like I have done in simple wiki, please create the following redirects:

  1. Ancient Manipuri
  2. Old Manipuri
  3. Early Manipuri
  4. Ancient Meitei
  5. Old Meitei
  6. Early Meitei
  7. Ancient Meetei
  8. Old Meetei
  9. Early Meetei

And again, adding the word "language" to each of the above. Haoreima (talk) 13:06, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Haoreima: I will not create an article for now as I don't think there is anything to say that was not already said in w:Meitei language. I will redirect the above to w:Meitei language soon though. Regards, --Ferien (talk) 13:10, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Wait pal! There's something I received. https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Language_committee please see the talk I had there. I have some doubt. Haoreima (talk) 13:13, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima: Well, see m:Language proposal policy#Specific issues. It says only wikisources in ancient languages are accepted, but you, Awangba Mangang and Luwanglinux all seem to understand Old Manipuri, so do lots of native Meitei speakers know Old Manipuri? That could change whether the wiki is accepted or not. --Ferien (talk) 13:18, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yes, not all the Meitei people, but those who are really interested in the language can easily learn it if one has a sound knowledge of the modern Meitei. Haoreima (talk) 13:21, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Ferien: But what do you mean by "That could change whether the wiki is accepted or not."? Haoreima (talk) 13:39, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Haoreima: Well, ancient language Wikipedias are apparently unlikely to be accepted, if there are not many native speakers. --Ferien (talk) 15:28, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Ferien: Well, what was the matter about the wiki sources? What does that mean? Is incubator not applicable? Please explain elaborately. Haoreima (talk) 16:25, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima: Wikisource is another wiki project, like Wiktionary and Wikipedia. But new wikisources are put into wikisource.org, not incubator. --Ferien (talk) 16:27, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Ferien:Ancient language should be put on wiki source. If that's so, then will omp incubator be not useful? Haoreima (talk) 16:29, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima:: Not all ancient languages have to be put onto Wikisource. For example, there is an Old English Wikipedia, and not many people use that nowadays. --Ferien (talk) 16:34, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Ferien:Well, do you mean that omp incubator will be effective if there's good number of native speakers of the language? Haoreima (talk) 16:36, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima: I think so. You should probably ask on the Incubator:Community Portal.
I find it the requirements a little confusing, let's take Simple English as an example because no one actually speaks Simple English on an everyday basis, they speak English. Simple English is just English but for children, basically. But Simple English seems to be taught a lot more because it's the basics of English. I'm not sure if Old Manipuri could have a Wikipedia, even though it is spoken more than Simple English. I think the reason why this is, is because the language requirements changed a few years ago. So if someone thought of the Simple English Wikipedia today, it likely wouldn't have been allowed to be invented.--Ferien (talk) 16:43, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Ferien: If obstacles are waiting for omp incubator in future, then shall we quit right now? And instead, shall we start wiki source for the omp? That will save both your and my time and efforts! Haoreima (talk) 16:46, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima: I'm not sure. I think you should ask someone on the Incubator:Community Portal, they'll be able to tell us how to continue. --Ferien (talk) 16:48, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Sure. Haoreima (talk) 16:51, 18 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
