This is the Wikimedia Incubator, where potential Wikimedia project wikis in new language versions of Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikinews, Wikiquote and Wiktionary can be arranged, written, tested and proven worthy of being hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Although these test wikis do not yet have their own wiki, they can be used for real like any other Wikimedia project wiki.

New language versions of Wikiversity should go to Beta Wikiversity, and those of Wikisource to Old Wikisource.

If you are here to start a new language edition of a project, you can find all information on Help:Manual. Please be aware of the local policy.

Some important rules:

You need a valid language code (explained in the manual), if you haven't, you can apply for one, or go to Incubator Plus.
Starting a test wiki here doesn't mean it will later be automatically accepted by Wikimedia; you need it to be approved by the Language committee first. See Requests for new languages for more information.
Please respect the naming conventions for the test language, to help future migrations of pages to an actual wiki project. All of your test pages (including templates and categories) need to be named uniquely (by using a prefix — at least the language code; see above) and consistently.

If you have knowledge of a language which currently has a test wiki here, you are strongly encouraged to contribute to that test wiki.

Please give all pages you create a correct prefix. More information about prefixes.

7 May 2012: A proposal to disable uploading on smaller wikis. Does not affect Incubator, as local uploads are already disabled, but interesting for new wikis.
27 March 2012: Lezgi Wikipedia (and from outside of Incubator: Gujarati Wikisource, Belarussian Wikisource, Slovenian Wikiversity) have been created.
24 February 2012: MediaWiki 1.19 deployment
21 February 2012: International Mother Language Day: IRC office hour about language support
6 February 2012: The Translate extension has been enabled on the Incubator. Translators can now translate in an easier interface at Special:Translate.
1 February 2012: Veps Wikipedia, Punjabi Wiktionary (and from outside of Incubator: Marathi Wikisource) have been created.
