Namespace translations[edit source]

@Dahlbs14, @Askolani nasution, @IHLubis, @Pulunganmeliani22, @Aghoni.28, @Nurhidayah Tanjung, @Delimasuryani, @UAR siregar, @Bennylin, @Dyalim: Hello! Some happy news, the language committe has now approved the Mandailing Wiktionary!

Before a wiki is created, it is best to have translations for the namespaces. So would any of you be able to help translate the following into Mandailing? Only the things between 'quotes', of course. Feel free to edit my message directly to add the translations.

$namespaceNames = [
    NS_MEDIA            => 'Media',
    NS_SPECIAL          => 'Special',
    NS_TALK             => 'Talk',
    NS_USER             => 'User',
    NS_USER_TALK        => 'User_talk',
    NS_PROJECT_TALK     => '$1_talk',
    NS_FILE             => 'File',
    NS_FILE_TALK        => 'File_talk',
    NS_MEDIAWIKI        => 'MediaWiki',
    NS_MEDIAWIKI_TALK   => 'MediaWiki_talk',
    NS_TEMPLATE         => 'Template',
    NS_TEMPLATE_TALK    => 'Template_talk',
    NS_HELP             => 'Help',
    NS_HELP_TALK        => 'Help_talk',
    NS_CATEGORY         => 'Category',
    NS_CATEGORY_TALK    => 'Category_talk',
];

$namespaceNames['anp'] = [
    NS_GADGET => 'Gadget',
    NS_GADGET_TALK => 'Gadget_talk',
    NS_GADGET_DEFINITION => 'Gadget_definition',
    NS_GADGET_DEFINITION_TALK => 'Gadget_definition_talk',
];

$namespaceNames['anp'] = [
    828 => 'Module',
    829 => 'Module_talk',
];

hello, I'm sorry because right on April 22 we are celebrating a big Muslim day and are on leave so we can only respond to this message at this time IHLubis (talk) 18:47, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@IHLubis: No worries, we're not in a big rush. :-)
I added a patch for the namespace names now, at gerrit:912796. I used "Obar_$1" instead of "$1 obar" for NS_PROJECT_TALK ($1 will be replaced by the name of the site, so it will turn into "Obar_Wikikamus"), and I also used "Obar_tolongi" instead of "Tolongi_pamake" for NS_HELP_TALK – I assume that "Tolongi_pamake" was just a mistake.
Does it look OK? I also added some other fields that are identical to the ones for Indonesian. I assume the date format is the same (that the normal way to write dates in Mandailing is "date month year"). If that is not the case, please let me know. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 09:52, 27 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
for the date I see no problem
for the translation I apologize there is a slight error for "HELP_TALK = Obar Manologi"
for other parts I will re-send in the reply column here related to the words above IHLubis (talk) 14:39, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Using the Batak Mandailing language interface in this site, the translation for talk page is "marpokat". Hopefully the community can come to a consensus on which term to be used. As I understand, one is formal, while the other is non-formal (between "marpokat" and "obar").
Other than that, "user" is translated "pangguna" in the interface ("user page" -> "alaman pangguna") instead of "pamake", "file" is still translated as "berkas" (same as Indonesian) instead of "borkas", "help" is translated "manolongi" instead of "tolongi"
In the future, I would expect a streamlined process (from WMF), where the translation of namespaces happen in translatewiki instead, so it can achieve some consistency (with the translation of interface).
Also I agree that
NS_HELP_TALK => 'Help_talk', => 'Tolongi_pamake'
was a mistake. It should be either "Obar_tolongi" or "Obar_manolongi"
I would suggest
NS_GADGET => 'Gadget', => 'alat na paten'
is too long, and changed into "Alat" Bennylin (talk) 14:21, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
"HELP_TALK = Obar Manologi" IHLubis (talk) 10:03, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@IHLubis: "Help talk" should be "Obar Manologi" (capital M?) while "Help" is still "Tolongi"? Are you sure? Normally the main namespace and its talk namespace use the same term.
Also, what about the other comments Bennylin made about the translations of "user" and "talk" in the interface vs. the namespace names? It would be good to be consistent, but it's much easier to change the interface translations instead of the namespace names, so it's good to be certain before the patch is finalized. Hi @IHLubis,
Can you please address the questions from @Jon Harald Søby and @Bennylin?
Particularly, the question about Borkas / Berkas / Barkas. What is the correct word for "file"? Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 14:16, 10 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
hello, sorry I just replied to this message for the word 'file' in the Mandailing language, it doesn't exist until now and we also often call it 'borkas' or files according to English IHLubis (talk) 01:06, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

We will also need a logo for the Mandailing Wiktionary. I haven't seen or found one yet; so could any of you please give me the translation for "The Free Dictionary"? Then I can help create a logo file. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 08:55, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

for the logo whether to be the hallmark of the mandailing wikitionary project? IHLubis (talk) 18:51, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@IHLubis: Yes. The Indonesian Wiktionary logo looks like this. So we will need to replace "Wiktionary" with "Wikikamus" and the text "Kamus bebas" with the correct translation in Mandailing – what is that? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 09:54, 27 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, that's an alternative logo. The official logo is File:Wiktionary-logo-id.svg. Since there are 3+ different Wiktionary logos, I suggest you choose one of them (or ask a set of logos). See also c:Wikimedia_movement_in_Indonesia#Wiktionaries for reference. Bennylin (talk) 09:43, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I suggested to IHLubis to contact WMID, to help designing a logo for Mandailing Wiktionary.
Also, I would suggest that you ask for a set of logo, so that there would be some consistency in the design; at the minimum, Mandailing Wikipedia and Wiktionary logos, but can also extend to Wikiquote and Wikibooks. It wouldn't take 4x the time to design those logos, IMHO. Bennylin (talk) 14:23, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
ok mas IHLubis (talk) 10:05, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
hello @Jon Harald Søby@Bennylin to the logo Wiktionary Mandailing it's done here's a link to the logoː https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiktionary_Mandailing_logo.svg IHLubis (talk) 09:36, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@IHLubis: Ah, excellent. Thank you very much! Jon Harald Søby (talk) 09:41, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So, does this request get stalled for two months because of there was no logo? Bennylin (talk) 18:17, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bennylin: No, the logo is not super important for that. The namespaces are more important – if they aren't present when the wiki is imported, they will remain in English in all wikitext, instead of getting translated automatically by the exporting script.
