Spelling for titles[edit source]

Good day, some words in Mi'kmaq have a different spelling depending if it is "my", "your" or "his/her". For example, with "foot", Nkat is "my foot", Kkat is "your foot" and Wkwat is "her/his foot". Hello, Djembayz here. I'd like to put some of the work I've done creating very basic pages on w:Tsetsêhestâhese (with Amqui's help) to use on this wiki. My goal is pitching in a bit, using Mikmaq Online. I'd like to give the native speakers a good start so they can focus on writing content. On Míkmawísimk, you can see the different recognized orthographies for writing Mi'kmaq. I open this discussion to decide which one (or if we'll use more than one) will be used on this Wikipedia. I copy a message left by Paladin on the Míkmawísimk talk page pertinent to this discussion: "The Francis-Smith Orthography was developed by Bernard Francis and Douglas Smith in 1980. It is used by people in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and parts of New Brunswick. It is also the official orthography of the Mi'kmaq Sante' Mawio'mi (Grand Council)." Apart from what may be clear or simple or scholarly or officially accepted in one or the other region of Mi'kma'ki, there is an obvious benefit in representing one very intrinsic quality of Mi'kmawi'smk/L'nui'smk, the only non-endangered member of the sixteen-member Easter Algonquian family of languages -- that is its diversity. According to Amqui, the option can be offered to give respect where it's due and express oneself in either way of spelling. An introductory, explanatory preface would be enough to justify the use of more than one orthography if only on the basis of valid, long-term and accepted dialectal variation and usage. That's indeed words of widsom my friend. Let anybody contribute in their own dialect on the page they create. If somebody want to write on a subject already existing in a different dialect, I will provide help to make it possible. I agree. Don't forget that redirections allows people to search subjects in their favorite dialect. Also, using the different orthographs at the top of the article already removes some confusion. I don't think we should make the same mistake that some versions of Wikipedia, where some people try to impose their own words or orthograph for no other reason that it's their own. --Red Castle 13:53, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Translation of the main page[edit source]

Here's the text to translate for the main page of the Wiki (also feel free to propose anything you might feel more relevant than this text).

Partie 1:

This is a test wiki for a potential Wikipedia in Míkmaq language. If you are new to Wikipedia and want to know on to help, read How to become a contributor.
To create a new page, insert the title after "Wp/mic/" in the box below. Make sure the page doesn't exist already before creating a new one. If you have any questions or remarks, don't hesitate to come on the Talk page.

Partie 2:

Míkmaq language (spelled micmac in English and French) is an Eastern Algonquian language spoken by nearly 11,000 Míkmaq in Canada and United States. The word Míkmaq means "my friends". Míkmaq are mainly concentred in Atlantic provinces and Gaspé Peninsula of Quebec. They have a population of about 40,000. Today, there is 29 Míkmaq communities or bands all related together in the same tribe or nation, called Míkmaq Nationimow. Over the 18 Eastern Algonquian languages that was once spoken in North America, Míkmaq is part of the only 4 surviving today and the most alive.

Also confirm that the word Pisgwá is appropriate for home page and Mígmewei Wikipedia a good title ? Maybe we can find a way to translate Wikipedia in Mi'kmaq ? We also need to translate the following titles: "Featured pages" and "Random picture".

We changed the name of the main page to Pjilási as it's more appropriate than Pisgwá. We use Kelúsijik nipík for "good pages" and Napuikasik for "picture", thanks to Helen Sylliboy for her help. We also translated other links and titles of the main page. Amqui 04:25, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, that's some good help. I suppose it would be better to find a proper orthograph for the name of the encyclopedy. As far as I know, Wikipedya seem to be better. Or maybe we should keep the wiki part of the name and add some Mi'kmaq word to it that have the meaning of encyclopedia or something. --Red Castle 13:59, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, it would be nice to have the translation of words such as category, notes, references, bibliography, links, geography, biography and history, which are frequently used in articles. Red Castle, we just started a discussion on this subject, for the Wikipedia name, on the Facebook page of the Mikmaq Living Dictionary (where all contributors except us two come from as of yet (if you a have a Facebook account, I can give you the link so you can join if you are interested)). We decided to keep "Wikipedia" to keep it more clear and simple for everybody and since there isn't any other clear alternatives. Now we are brainstorming for how to translate "The free encyclopedia", so we can make a Mi'kmaq logo. I know those discussion should happen here, but I think the important is that we move forward. Status? 2015[edit source]
