ⲛⲓⲑⲟ ̀ⲛⲁⲣⲁⲃⲟⲥ[edit source]
So there's a lot of major towns in governorate which i believe have distinctively Arabic names – Al Ghardaqa (Hurghada), Safaga, Marsa Alam, Al Qoseir etc. How should we represent them in Coptic?
- Yeah, I thought about it too. As there are no Coptic or Egyptian toponyms, we have to create one. We sometimes translate the Arabic name into Coptic, especially when it is our own town and we try to find a Coptic expression. That way is kind of widespread among enthusiastic Copts, i.e. ⲡⲓⲥⲟⲗⲥⲉⲗ for الزينية, as described by Vycichl. I did the same thing for Marsa Alam, [[||Wp/cop/ⲙⲁⲛⲁⲩϫⲁⲗ `ⲙⲙⲏⲓⲛⲓ|ⲙⲁⲛⲁⲩϫⲁⲗ `ⲙⲙⲏⲓⲛⲓ]]. The problem with Hurghada is that it comes from a plant for which we lack a name in Coptic.
- But generally, for Arabic toponyms in Egypt which have a clear etymology which is evident also to contemporary Arabic speakers, I argue for a literal translation into Coptic (of course, only if there is no coptic name otherwise).
- I found some information about Al Qoseir. It seems researchers are pretty confident that ⲙⲩⲟⲥ (ϩ)ⲟⲣⲙⲟⲥ is Al Qoseir. (see Cohen in "Hellenistic Settlements in Syria, the Red Sea Basin and North Africa") Ϯⲙⲉⲗⲗⲓⲥⲏⲧ (talk) 15:38, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for the information! About Hurghada – the name of the plant is Arctostaphylos uva-ursi as far as i know, so maybe we should come up with a name for the plant and construct city's name with ϯⲙⲓⲛ- construction? Arctostaphylos translated literally as "narrow bunch of grapes". I don't know what it's name in Arabic is and it's etymology though. ⲡⲁⲣⲇⲁ (talk) 10:58, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
- Ok so i was surely wrong about the name and Arctostaphylos means just "bear's grape" just like English bearberry. So we need a word for a bear. There's usual borrowing from Greek ⲁⲣⲝ but there's also Demotic ḥtm.t (ϩⲱⲧⲙ?) which was designating Syrian bear but we could use it for a bear in general and leave ⲁⲣⲝ for a scientific purposes. ⲥⲉⲣⲕⲓ (talk) 14:37, 25 September 2018 (UTC)

I've changed the name of Hurghada to ⲧⲁⲗⲅⲁⲣⲇⲁⲕⲉ (similar to ⲧⲁⲗⲙⲁⲣⲁⲅⲉ). The plant's name is unattested in Coptic indeed. --ⲫⲁϯⲟⲩⲉⲣϣⲓ (talk) 16:37, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
