What names should we use for Scandinavian countries? My proposals are:

  • Sweden – ⲓⲥⲟⲩⲉϭ or ⲥⲟⲩⲉϭ (from Turkish)
  • Norway – ⲛⲟⲩⲣⲃⲉⲕ (Turkish and Arabic)
  • Denmark – ⲧⲁⲛⲙⲁⲣⲕ

ⲥⲟⲩⲉϭ for Sweden is indeed not unlikely, if we assume that the Copts would have gotten the names via the Turks/Ottomans (who in turn often got the earlier names from Slavic). Although it could also have been ⲥⲃⲉϭ, given the pronunciation of v in Turkish. ⲥⲟⲩⲉϭ would imply an Arabic pronunciation.

ⲛⲟⲣⲃⲉϭ maybe for Norway? Again, from Turkish. And ⲧⲁⲛⲙⲁⲣⲕ or ⲧⲁⲛⲓⲙⲁⲣⲕⲁ for Denmark? Although, let's wait a bit, I try to find more information.

Maybe we will get opinions from other people too. ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 01:14, 18 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

In my opinion:

  • Sweden: Either ⲥⲟⲩⲏⲇⲓⲁ or ⲥⲟⲩⲏϭ
  • Norway: ⲛⲟⲣⲃⲉ/ⲏϭ (although this is an inconsistency: why is it ⲥⲟⲩⲏϭ, but ⲛⲟⲣⲃⲏϭ ?) maybe ⲛⲟⲣⲟⲩⲉ/ⲏϭ
  • Denmark: ⲇⲁⲛⲓⲁ (ⲧⲁⲛⲓⲁ) or ⲧⲁⲛⲙⲁⲣⲕ Ϯⲙⲉⲗⲗⲓⲥⲏⲧ (talk) 15:09, 18 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
Let's summarize:
  • Sweden – ⲥⲃⲉϭ
  • Norway – ⲛⲟⲣⲃⲉϭ (I prefer these to those with "ⲟⲩ" cause it represents Turkish pronunciation better and it's actually easier to pronounce but you may disagree)
  • Denmark – ⲧⲁⲛⲙⲁⲣⲕ

If everyone's fine with these, let's stick to them then and move the articles? --ⲡⲁⲣⲇⲁ (talk) 21:24, 19 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

I'm fine with the names as such, but maybe we should discuss the orthography. First, I was kind of indifferent but now I think ⲏ instead of ⲉ (which is a very bright vowel) would be better and more expectable. Ϯⲙⲉⲗⲗⲓⲥⲏⲧ (talk) 05:32, 20 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, good question. I think it is indeed better. ⲥⲃⲏϭ. ⲛⲟⲣⲃⲏϭ. I don't think it is easier to pronounce than ⲥⲟⲩⲏϭ etc, but it is OK. ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 14:46, 20 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
