I have known Vasyl Ovsienko since 1968, when I entered Taras Shevchenko University, and Vasyl was a senior. He literally ran to the reading room. And did not leave it when everyone was having fun. Vasyl taught us a lot, for example, when Taras Shevchenko's "Testament" is sung from the stage , everyone should stand up. For us, village boys and girls, this was new. And then, after returning from exile, Vasyl published the first book "The Light of People".[1]

Thanks to him, the people of Ukraine know a lot about the human rights movement. It was a heroic, outstanding movement. I remember the British magazine "Index" wrote that 45% of dissidents and human rights activists were Ukrainians. So the contribution of this movement to gaining Independence and establishing statehood is enormous. Independence and statehood were not given to Ukraine by anyone - they were won with a lot of blood and price. Including the exploits of such modest and very strong people as Vasyl.<ref name='vech'>
