The "Fledermaus" (Microchiroptera) isn't a "Maus" (mouse) either ;-). These species are all bats:

and there are many more links where bat species are just named tutapishco (I never saw mashu on species-lists of Ecuador). In the DINEIB dictionary tuta pishku is in the main part of the dictionary as well as mashu: "tuta pishku [tutapišku] s. s. murciélago. Pawashpa purik ukuchashina rikurik, tutakunapi wiwapa ya warta chumkak. Tuta pishkuka wakra yawarta, apyu yawartapashmi tsumkan. Sin. mashu. I mean, yes, tuta pishku is in the main part Kichwa-Spanish, but in the Spanish-Kichwa part, under murciélago the first entry is mashu and then chimpilaku. As far as I can see, mashu is used mainly in the Sierra and tutapishku in the Selva. So both forms are valid, but I would prefer 1. an unambiguous form, 2. a form used by a the greater number of speakers (in this order of preference).

Haha, "Fledermaus" is no "Maus" and "Intillama" is no "Llama", I know.

It is quite funny that tutapishku is described in the diccionariokichwa.pdf as "blood-sucking" (yawar ch'unqaq), which means en:Desmodus or related species. -- AlimanRuna 17:00, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mashu is also described as "blood-sucking" (in the DINEUB): "mashu [mašu] s. s. murciélago. Pawashpa purik ukuchashina rikurik, tutakunapi wiwapa yawarta chumkak. Mashuka wakra yawarta, apyu yawartapashmi tsumkan." Sin. chimpilaku, tutapishku. (nearly the same description as for tuta pishku)

Uh, "patpayuq" can mean - and in Ayacucho Qichwa or other Qichwa varieties always means - "having feathers", though "having wings" is meant - there has been a discussion on Talk:Wp/qug/Palama. It is really strange. The makers of the DINEIB dictionary seem to always think of vampire bats whenever they hear of bats.
