Is Σκυθία commonly used for Kazakhstan, or any modern country, among Ancient Greek enthusiasts? Why not Κασαχία? KevinMuskelprotz (talk) 01:27, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, you'll have to excuse me for not writing in Ancient Greek. Second of all, when using placenames, it's usually best to use names that the Ancient Greeks used themselves; whenever it makes sense in modern geographical names. e.g. we use Ἱσπανία instead of Ἰβηρία (even though that's what ancient greeks called Spain), because it doesn't make sense in modern terms. For Kazakhstan, Scythia is a term that doesn't conflict much with ancient Scythia. What are your thoughts on that? PastelKos (talk) 19:56, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. If this is the policy, I'm totally fine with it! I see some problems in cases where we want to talk about ancient Scythia as opposed to modern Kazakhstan, or that Wp/grc/Χωρασμία could also be Turkmenistan (instead of Uzbekistan as it is used here). But I'm not iconoclastic, and if users are fine with how it is done now, I agree with them. KevinMuskelprotz (talk) 20:10, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(Sorry for the late reply) Well, this wiki is preety much stagnant since there are like 3-4 people editing it, so the policy is what we decide it is. I think that now is the time to fix any mistakes made by the previous generation of editors. Fixing names, spelling and orthographic mistakes, expanding pages etc. So maybe you are right, we should rename Kazakhstan to Καζαχία, Uzbekistan to Ὑζβεκία, Turkmenistan to Τυρκμενία and Tajikistan to Ταζικία. It would match with Κιργιζία for Kyrgyzstan and Aφγαζία for Afghanistan. But since the ancient greeks kinda had names for those areas, maybe we should rename them to something like Σκυθία (Χώρα). What do you think? PastelKos (talk) 20:22, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, I'm not online every day either. I'm all for using ancient names, whenever possible. We just need to make sure that the ancient toponym lies within boundaries which match the modern states more or less. Given that, I can live with Σκυθία for Kazakhstan!
