There's actually another page that contains a list of Egyptian names. Maybe we should merge them. --ⲫⲁϯⲟⲩⲉⲣϣⲓ (talk) 14:10, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Oh damn, I didn't know that. Yes, definitely! How should we do it? ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 14:33, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I actually took the most popular Egyptian male names for that article (and a few random Coptic ones). Maybe we should just mention that somewhere in this article. Also is there anything to read about Coptic naming system? Was there anything different from the Greek/Roman one? --ⲫⲁϯⲟⲩⲉⲣϣⲓ (talk) 14:37, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Monika Hasitzka has published a list of personal names found in Coptic texts. The names used by Copts, except that they used more names from Biblical sources, was actually not that different from texts found in Demotic sources at the same time. The differentation between Coptic and Demotic is especially difficult here, because it is purely by writing system. Is an Egyptian name found in a Greek text of the 3rd or 4th century Coptic or Demotic? The distinction is arbitrary.
Can I take the names of your list and write them into this list?
I wanted to classify the names by etymology. You included ⲙⲏⲛⲁ - it is extremely common among Copts today, and I don't know if it is Greek or Arabic. Given that there is a saint of this name, I think it is Greek, but Arabized? ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 14:44, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In fact it's a Grecized Egyptian name Μηνας (i think that the final -s was lost before the conquest and is a Greek vocative). The Egyptian predecessor is Mny (see Μιν or Μινος (an old Greek form mentioned by Herodotus), the pharaoh of the first dynasty and the founder of Memphis). Vycichl says that non-grecized Coptic form would be probably ⲙⲏⲛ (has nothing to do with the god Min) and that the form Μηνας is influenced by the Egyptian pronunciation as well (thus ⲏ in the middle). --ⲫⲁϯⲟⲩⲉⲣϣⲓ (talk) 14:59, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And yes, of course you can take the names from that list :). --ⲫⲁϯⲟⲩⲉⲣϣⲓ (talk) 15:02, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Great. I see, very interesting. Then I will add the name under ⲙⲏⲛⲁ, and we can explain everything else in an article about ⲙⲏⲛⲁ. ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 15:07, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK, so I took your names and the text and incorporated it, and made a redirect to his article. ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 15:22, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
