Egyptian name[edit source]

Again, should we use/mention Egyptian name here? The are two names attested – mȝy (n) pꜣ ym (island of the sea (should it be ⲙⲟⲩⲓⲛⲫⲓⲟⲙ in Coptic?)) and mȝy (n) S(ꜣ)lmynꜣ (island of Salamis). --ⲡⲁⲣⲇⲁ (talk) 15:51, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Is it certain that mȝy (n) pꜣ ym refers to Cyprus? In the Chicago Demotic Dictionary it sounds a bit as if one researcher has linked the name to Cyprus, but that's it. (ⲑ)ⲙⲟⲩⲓⲛⲥⲁⲗⲁⲙⲓⲛⲁ is doubtlessly Cyprus, but even though we may mention it, I don't think it's a better name for Cyprus. If there would be a genuine Egyptian name, ok, but ⲙⲟⲩⲓⲛⲥⲁⲗⲁⲙⲓⲛⲁ is barely more Egyptian and the real downside is that there actually is an island called Salamis/Salamina in Greece, which is not near Cyprus. Also, ⲕⲩⲡⲣⲟⲥ is quite established in Coptic. ⲁⲥⲥⲉⲛⲁ ⲕⲁⲡⲟⲡⲓ (talk) 23:31, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm open to ⲙⲟⲩⲛⲫⲓⲟⲙ for Cyprus. Demoticists seem to have accepted the equation of mȝy (n) pꜣ ym with Cyprus, I found it in Toponyms in "Demotic and Abnormal Hieratic texts from the 8th century BC till the 5th century AD". Also, note it says "till the 5th century AD", which means we can use it for Coptic too if we ever need to coin a word.
In any case, we should create sections in every article about the etymology, so that readers know we just didn't invent something out of thin air. ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 15:08, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
