Bridge

[edit source]

Which word should we use for "bridge"? We have ϯⲁⲃⲁⲑⲣⲁ (from Greek διαβάθρα where ⲇⲓ is mistaken for a definite article), ⲁⲣⲅⲁⲛⲧⲁⲣⲁ (attested once, an Arabic loanword) and a number of words for "dyke", "dam" and "river crossing" (see the discussion here). I think from these Egyptian words ϫⲓⲛⲓⲟⲣ is the best option. What do you think? --ⲫⲁϯⲟⲩⲉⲣϣⲓ (talk) 14:37, 18 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

I agree with you. Also, what is this word ⲫⲱϧⲉⲛ we have in Wp/cop/ⲥⲁϫⲓ_`ⲙⲃⲉⲣⲓ_`ⲛⲣⲉⲙⲛⲭⲏⲙⲓ for "bridge"? I've never heard of it in that sense. ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 18:24, 18 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
It's just a calque of an English "bridge" and Arabic جسر – "plank". I'm not sure about ϫⲓⲛⲓⲟⲣ (although it's equated with γεφυρα which is a word for "bridge" in Modern Greek) because it's more of a "crossing" or "ferry" and we don't have another word for that. --ⲫⲁϯⲟⲩⲉⲣϣⲓ (talk) 23:34, 18 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
What if we create ⲟⲩⲁⲧⲉⲃⲓⲟⲣ (literally "River crosser", ⲟⲩⲱⲧⲉⲃ to change, to cross, ⲟⲩⲁⲧⲉⲃ- is the prefigated old participle, called participium coniunctum by Crum and others) so we don't need to give ϫⲓⲛⲓⲟⲣ the meaning "bridge"? ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 05:03, 19 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
