Turkish intro[edit source]

Created this Turkish intro page, since there could be some interest from the Turkish speaking community, whose ancestors were Levantine Arabic speakers. There is a significant number of Turkish-speaking people who can speak and understand Levantine Arabic very well, but they can not read and write it in Arabic Script. Allowing them to write in Latin script, even if it is not standardized yet, may help this project grow. CC @FunLater@A455bcd9

For instance see this video, where a discussion about how the language is in danger in Turkey (I'm guessing it is Levantine Arabic) starts at 00:00:35. TheJoyfulTentmaker (talk) 23:45, 27 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Merhaba @TheJoyfulTentmaker, çok teşekkür ederim. The latin script is not standardized at all. We could allow it but I'm not sure it would increase participation. It could actually keep many potential contributors at bay as many may not like the latin script (it's already controversial enough to write in colloquial Levantine...). Also, it would mean duplicating efforts as every single article would be available in the two scripts. Ideally, what we want is a plugin that automatically converts Arabic characters to Latin and vice-versa. They have this in the Serbo-Croatian wiki (for Cyrillic) and on the Kazakh one (for Arabic). So it's possible. But it's a long term goal. A455bcd9 (talk) 08:35, 28 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think we should let people write pages in the Latin script and then manually transliterate them. Many in Lebanon are fluent typists in Latin, but not Arabic.
I also found this site a few minutes ago; it offers Arabizi to Arabic transliteration and has a free API too. But its footer indicates that it probably hasn't been updated since 2017. We should probably feature a list of tools (dictionaries, transliteration sites, etc.) and link the list from the main page. FunLater (talk) 11:54, 28 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
If you're OK to transliterate manually then go for it. ChatGPT can also probably do it. A455bcd9 (talk) 16:41, 28 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
