The area surrounding Lake Jualbup was originally known as Jualbup, an Aboriginal term meaning ‘a place where water rises in the season of spring’. Lake Jualbup is a registered Department of Aboriginal Affairs Aboriginal Site (Site ID 3794) and subject to an agreement- “Lake Jualbup-Shenton Park Agreement” between the City of Subiaco and the Nyungah Circle of Elders (signed in March 2001 and discussed again in 2011). This agreement requires that the lake bed not be disturbed, where possible, and that vegetated “natural” slopes of native vegetation would replace the existing retaining wall around the lake and that native trees would progressively replace non-native trees. It is also agreed that the Nyungah association with the lake and surrounding area is acknowledged and that there are opportunities for Nyungah people to contribute to signage or artwork and work on the site so that the site may form part of an Aboriginal heritage trail.

Uses of the area

• The Lake Jualbup site is described as a burial site and camp and prior to European settlement was known to be a meeting place for Nyungah people.
• Wetlands and lakes in the Shenton Park area, such as Lake Jualbup, attracted an abundance of wildlife that provided good hunting ground for Nyungah people.
