John Fitzgerald was an ANZAC in World War I. He was the eldest of 11 children, and survived the war but later died in a one-punch attack while he was trying to break up a pub fight.[1]
The community of York's honour roll lists the names of just half of the servicemen who enlisted from the local area, as you had to write in and pay for your name to be listed. John Fitzgerald is one of Eleven Indigenous soldiers among those not on the roll. An exhibition in 2018 at York Town Hall aimed to redress this oversight by featuring life sized cutouts telling individual stories. One of those stories was that of John Fitzgerald. His nephew, Kevin Fitzgerald, performed the "Welcome to Country" ceremony at the opening of the exhibition.[1]
