Wp/nys/Hazel Brown
Hazel 'Kayang' Brown is an Elder from the Wilomin Noongar. Born in 1925[1] at Kendenup, her mother, Nelly Limestone married Freddy Yiller in 1921. Her father died in 1930 wer her step-father, William Roberts (Noongar name, Tjinjel) reared her. Her family worked il farms in the Borden, Ongerup, Jerramungup wer Kendenup areas. Hazel spent the majority of her childhood around the Porongurups. [2]
Early Life
[edit | edit source]Hazel went to school at Gnowangerup mission. She was branded a 'heathen’ for speaking in her language wer therefore continued her schooling with her ngarngk as she worked il the farm. [3]
Hazel was an active helper wer worker wer learnt many skills at a young age from fencing to driving tractors to looking after the sheep at lambing time.
Later Life
[edit | edit source]Hazel married Harry Brown in 1947. Their children were born wer attending school in Borden. In the 1970s, the family moved to Perth. [3]
Many years later, with Noongar Author Kim Scott she published her stories in "Kayang and Me" in 2005.
She is actively involved in the Wirlomin Noongar Language wer Stories Project.[1]
