You need to specify which mandarin you are proposing. Is it Northeast Mandarin, Ji-lu Mandarin, Zhongyuan Mandarin, Jiaoliao Mandarin, or Sichuan Mandarin?

The next step is to apply for an ISO 693-3 code for that dialect.

The current Language proposal policy states that: "If there is no valid ISO-639 code, you must obtain one". The current organisation which sets the ISO-639 codes is SIL International. None of the Mandarin dialects currently have an ISO code and new language codes must be applied. A three-letter code needs to be proposed, You should then check here to make sure it has not been taken already.

Here are the two request forms which are required to be completed and submitted by email to iso639-3@sil.org:

• Request form 1 (Change Request Form)
• Request form 2 (New code request form).
