ⲡⲓⲣⲉⲛϯⲙⲓ[edit source]

Are ⲉⲣⲙⲱⲛⲧ and ⲉⲣⲙⲟⲛⲧ actually more common in Coptic texts (I googled it quickly and ⲉⲣⲙⲉⲛⲧ just shows up in Wikipedia texts, which is not reliable, because many people just seem to add Copt-ish words, while the former too are found in manuscripts)? In his Etymological Dictionary of Egyptian (entry of the god 'Month'), Gabor Takács explicitly mentions ⲉⲣⲙⲱⲛⲧ as a Bohairic form. Does the city name have to competing forms and etymologies? One coming from "Horus-Month" (expected outcome would be *ϩⲁⲣⲙⲟⲛⲧ, so this doesn't sound right, or is it some vulgar dialectal form? In any case, -ⲙⲟⲛⲧ would be certain). The other from jwnj-mntw "Heliopolis of Month", where we would of course not expect initial ϩ (I think we would still expect -ⲙⲟⲛⲧ).
I don't doubt that ⲉⲣⲙⲉⲛⲧ is not a "real" Coptic form, but I was wondering if the Coptic, Greek and Arabic names come from two slightly different names of the city. ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 14:49, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Timm gives forms like ⲁⲣⲙⲟⲛⲑ, ⲁϩⲣⲏⲙⲛⲧ, ⲉⲣⲙⲁⲛⲧ, ⲉⲣⲙⲉⲛⲧⲓ, ⲉⲣⲙⲟⲛⲧ, ⲉⲣⲙⲱⲛⲧ, ⲣⲙⲁⲛⲧ, ⲣⲙⲟⲛⲧ. Cherny says ⲣⲙⲁⲛⲧ (ⲣⲙⲟⲛⲧ as well) is Sahidic and ⲉⲣⲙⲟⲛⲧ and ⲉⲣⲙⲱⲛⲧ are Bohairic. Both Cherny and Peust derive the name from jwnj-mntw. Given the Greek form Ερμωνθις i guess ⲉⲣⲙⲱⲛⲧ is a safe choice. --ⲫⲁϯⲟⲩⲉⲣϣⲓ (talk) 08:03, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
