Where does ⲧⲉⲣⲏⲥ come from? --ⲫⲁϯⲟⲩⲉⲣϣⲓ (talk) 11:42, 18 July 2020 (UTC)
- ⲑⲉⲣⲏⲥ Southland? ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 17:15, 18 July 2020 (UTC)
- Shouldn't it mean "Australia" then? Also Southland is attested in Coptic as ⲡⲁⲑⲟⲩⲣⲏⲥ in sense of "Thebaid". --ⲫⲁϯⲟⲩⲉⲣϣⲓ (talk) 23:37, 18 July 2020 (UTC)
- Given the etymology of Australia from "auster" - southern wind, using ⲡⲁⲑⲟⲩⲣⲏⲥ (most like "of southern wind") for it makes even more sense. --ⲫⲁϯⲟⲩⲉⲣϣⲓ (talk) 00:17, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

- You want to use ⲡⲁⲑⲟⲩⲣⲏⲥ as a country name? For ⲁⲩⲥⲧⲣⲁⲗⲓⲁ? Or for ⲑⲉⲣⲏⲥ? ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 04:45, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
- I mean why would we use "Southland" for Antarctica? I'd use it for Australia and ⲡⲁⲑⲟⲩⲣⲏⲥ instead of ⲑⲉⲣⲏⲥ. --ⲫⲁϯⲟⲩⲉⲣϣⲓ (talk) 20:44, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
- But what if ⲡⲁⲑⲟⲩⲣⲏⲥ is actually used for Thebaid? And as a normal word for southwind. For me "Southland" for Antarctica makes much more sense than for Australia. Or maybe we can call Antarctica "Southpoleland". ⲁⲛⲉⲯⲓⲟⲩⲥⲓⲣⲓ (talk) 22:00, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
- As far as I can tell ⲡⲁⲑⲟⲩⲣⲏⲥ was substituted with ⲙⲁⲣⲏⲥ for "Thebaid" or "Upper Egypt" in latter Coptic. I mean ⲡⲁⲑⲟⲩⲣⲏⲥ has the same etymology as Australia "southern land" or "the land of the southern wind". Antarctica is just "opposite from Arctic" so we could just use ⲁⲛⲧⲁⲣⲕⲧⲓⲕⲏ or something like ⲟⲩⲃⲉⲫⲁϣⲱⲡϣ (ⲫⲁϣⲱⲡϣ or ⲫⲁϣⲱⲃϣ for "Artic" – "one of the Ursa Major") although I'm not sure it's a legitimate construction and ⲟⲩⲃⲉ- can be used like that. The other option could be ⲁⲛⲧⲓⲫⲁϣⲱⲡϣ as ⲁⲛⲧⲓ- is attested in Coptic as well. --ⲫⲁϯⲟⲩⲉⲣϣⲓ (talk) 22:23, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

"South(pole)land" would make sense coming from Arabic (القارة القطبية الجنوبية), but the international term انتاركتيكا is also used. Do we have a word for "pole" in Coptic? I also don't have much against ⲁⲩⲥⲧⲣⲁⲗⲓⲁ and ⲁⲛⲧⲁⲣⲕⲧⲓⲕⲏ. ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 15:08, 20 July 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, "pole" is ⲡⲟⲗⲟⲥ. If you don't want a Coptic translation and everyone is ok with ⲁⲛⲧⲁⲣⲕⲧⲓⲕⲏ let's move it there. --ⲫⲁϯⲟⲩⲉⲣϣⲓ (talk) 10:31, 28 July 2020 (UTC)
- ⲁⲛⲧⲁⲣⲕⲧⲓⲕⲏ seems OK. Nobody said anything clearly against it. ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 13:31, 28 July 2020 (UTC)
