Summary

Description
English: Unión Victoria, Chimaltenango, Guatemala

Amigas del Sol (ADS)

Surrounded by ovens in various stages of construction and dressed in colorful traditional clothing, ADS member Catarina takes a break. When Amigas del Sol organized some 20 years ago, the small group of mostly Quiche and Kaqchikel women focused on confronting problems caused by cooking fires: burns, respiratory diseases, deforestation, and the cost of firewood.

The Inter-American Foundation (IAF) is an independent U.S. government agency created by Congress in 1969 to channel development assistance directly to the organized poor in Latin America and the Caribbean. The IAF has carried out its mandate by responding with grant support for the most creative ideas for self-help received from grassroots groups and nongovernmental organizations.
