ⲣⲉⲛϥ[edit source]

Manetho's name is most likely unconnected with Thot. Rather, it comes from mrjj-ntr-'3 'beloved by the great god', which is pronounced mai-net-o in Demotic/Coptic ⲙⲁⲓⲛⲉⲧⲟ. The Greek ⲙⲁⲛⲉⲑⲱⲑ is relatively late and is only attested once, the earlier Greek sources have ⲙⲁⲛⲉⲑⲱ which is closer to ⲙⲁⲓⲛⲉⲧⲟ. (See Gundacker 2015: 77, The Chronology of the Third and Fourth Dynasties according to Manetho's Aegyptiaca). ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 09:50, 6 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, seems legit, we should change it then. ⲥⲉⲣⲕⲓ (talk) 23:50, 7 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Good, I change it. The word is stressed on the final vowel, MAINETÓ. Usually, that requires aspiration in Bohairic (mainethó, as the Greek equivalent has it). However, this is not the case if there is a 3 hidden, and the final O means great, which is actually pronounced 3o, so there is no aspiration in Coptic. Just in case you wonder. ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 12:23, 9 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Btw, Vycichl reconstructs his name as ⲙⲁⲛⲉϩⲑⲟ meaning "groom" or "horse shepherd (ⲙⲁⲛⲉ+ϩⲑⲟ)". What do you think of it? ⲥⲉⲣⲕⲓ (talk) 00:04, 22 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
I usually think of Vycichl in best terms, but in this case I think Gundacker's idea is more probable, especially due to semantic reasons. ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 01:56, 29 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
