The image shows part of the historic habitat of Porphyrophora hamelii within the Ararat Plain and Aras (Araks) River Valley northeast of Mount Ararat. The red (crimson) area marked with a gold border is the major portion of the Vordan Karmir State Reservation near the village of Arazap in Armenia, a national sanctuary for the insects and salt marsh vegetation. A disjoint portion of the reservation at the village of Jrarat, which makes up 9.8% of the reservation by area, is not depicted. The purple annotations denote the historic vordan karmir-producing cities of Artashat and Dvin. The dots show the location of the archaeological sites of the historic cities, not the location of the modern cities. The twin peaks of Mount Ararat are marked with orange text, and the Aras (Araks) River, which spans the entire image from left to right, is marked in blue text. Several of the modern major cities in the area are also marked (in gray): Yerevan, Vagharshapat, and Armavir in Armenia; and Iğdır and Doğubayazıt in Turkey. The Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant is marked in brown.
