Summary
This flag is fictitious, proposed, or locally used unofficially. It has not been adopted in an official capacity, and although it may be named as if it was an official flag of a geographical or other entity and have some visual elements that are similar to official logos or flags of that entity, it does not have any official recognition. A flag of this type should not be added to any articles or pages unless it is officially proposed by a government agency, covered by the media, or sees notable local use.
There is very little evidence of flags used in Tunisia prior to Ottoman rule (from 1574), or indeed prior to the 18th century.
Ensigns with horizontal stripes are attested from about 1754.
Source: Franciae Vexilla (#15/61, September 1999), "Les ancêtres du drapeau tunisien".[1]
There are a number of 14th and 15th century depiction of Tunisian (Hafsid) flags in manuscripts. These mostly show flags in various colours with a single crescent.
WARNING: This image is highly speculative. The main source pointing to this design is the Catalan Atlas, which as a historical primary source cannot be considered a reliable reference, especially if it is the only source used.
This image was originally uploaded by Ingoman with the following comment: Flag of Tunis under the Hafsids, according to the Catalan Atlas c.1375 created by me, Ingoman (James Dahl) I, (sbwoodside) am reuploading it to clear a name collision with a Wikimedia commons image.
The claim by the uploader that the "horse" flag is based on the Catalan Atlas (c.1375) has not been verified.
Our reproduction of the relevant page shows no such flag. Instead, flags with crescents are visible. This is confirmed by the FOTW entry, where the Catalan Atlas is referred to as "Charles V Atlas".
