Summary

Description
English: A fresco depicting a precursor of pizza in the ruins of Pompeii. It dates back approximately 2,000 years. The fresco was found in 2023 in excavations in the Regio IX area of Pompeii (according to pompeiiinpictures.com: "IX.10.1 Samnite house later converted to a bakery"). Incidentally Pompeii is located close to Naples, commonly considered the birthplace of pizza. The fresco is on a wall of a hallway of a home that has a bakery in its annexe. The fresco also depicts a goblet of wine and various fruits, that include a pomegranate and a likely date. The pizza-like bread appears to have moretum, a cheese spread with herbs that was popular in ancient Rome. This fresco is likely to be inspired by the Greek hospitality ritual of xenia and it shows gifts typically offered to guests. Such images are common in the homes of ancient Pompeii.
Date before AD 79, the date when Pompeii was covered by a pyroclastic cloud
