Summary
DescriptionBawarchi-and-cook 0.jpg
English: A humorous card by one of the largest Raj retailers, comparing Western and Eastern cooks and procedures. It is signed by the artist George D. and dated 1911 in the bottom right corner. It can be read as condescending a century ago - in India, a thin man is doing a matronly woman's work, sitting on the floor. Yet it also shows the equivalences between one society and another; other cards in the series contrasted Babus and City Clerks, Dhobis and Washer Women.
