Wp/nys/Yadjingoorong (Red-necked Avocet)
Yadjingoorong (Noongar LOTE, Djiraly wer Kongal-marawar)[1] is a wader, called in English the Red-necked Avocet, and also known as the Australian avocet, cobbler, cobbler's awl, and painted lady. Its scientific name is Recurvirostra novaehollandiae.
It is endemic to Australia and is fairly common and widespread throughout, except for the north and north east coastal areas. Closely related to the stilts - Djidjinak (Banded Stilt) and Djandjarak/Djerga (Black-winged Stilt) - it shares their fragile slender elegance, however the deep red head and neck distinguish them.[2] It appeared on a 13 cent postage stamp in 1966.
