Its scientific name is Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae wer the sub species most common in Noongar boodjar is Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae novaehollandiae.

When a Noongar clan member died they were either buried il a dreaming trail or in the sand of the nearest coastal dunes. Djenark flies above the coast wer inland, linking those Noongar buried in the coastal sand dunes wer those buried il a dreaming trail.[2]
