Enforcement
[edit | edit source]Eventually, all articles should be converted into standard orthography. However, knowledge of the orthography is not a requirement to edit on this site. Articles should not be deleted, and editors should not be sanctioned, for their orthographic preferences.
Register
[edit | edit source]Basilect should be used in all circumstances and the specific dialect used should be specified using the "dialek" template. If you are not sure whether you have used proper orthography, you should use the standardising template. Not all Antiguans and Barbudans speak in basilect– many speak in mesolect. Basilect is the "deepest" form of Antiguan and Barbudan– the least similar to English.
Compound words
[edit | edit source]In this language, compound words and terms are quite common and can be a good method for avoiding the usage of complex loanwords from English that basilectal speakers may struggle to understand. Our policy encourages the use of compound words as long as they can be easily understandable to a basilectal speaker in written form when the jainupwud template is used alongside it. That template allows you to type in the hyphenated form of a closed compound word in addition to closed compound beforehand– i.e. jainupwud (jain-up-wud)– lit. joinedupword (joined-up-word). A basilectal speaker could easily understand that jainupwud ("joined-up-word") means "compound word" after basic contextualization.
In an article only the first instance of a compound word needs the jainupwud template. Unless it is highly self-explanatory, even linked compound terms should have the jainupwud template alongside it.
Specifics
[edit | edit source]- "dem", "an dem", and "an dey" should always be part of an open compound– i.e. "pikcha dem" not "pikchadem". This does not apply to certain words such as "fudem" or "demdie", where removing the "dem" would give the words an entirely different meaning.
- "up" (a particle that represents completion or totality) should always be part of a hyphenated compound unless it is followed by another stem (i.e. "jainupwud" is allowed but not "jainup"– it would have to be "jain-up").

"ng" and "g"
[edit | edit source]In the event of the letter "g" appearing after the digraph "ng", rather than using the spelling "ngg", the spelling "ng" should be used for the purposes of simplicity.
