Talking to sources[edit | edit source]

Usually try to get multiple sources. Especially for controversial topics, get sources from opposing sides.

You should correctly identify yourself to your source in advance, and inform them if you are recording, and when you are conducting an interview.

You should advise all correspondents that you wish to publish their replies. Ask in advance, because it's polite, and it's not easy to persuade someone after they spill the beans!

If they won't agree to this, then make sure you don't republish their correspondence in entirety on the site, simply quote relevent portions, whatever is needed. Fair use or fair dealing protects this in most countries, including the US where en.wikinews.org servers are hosted, for reporting of news. But no more than is needed for reporting is protected. You should research for yourself what the law is in your own country.

You will also need to ask about copyright for any material, images, or other media that the source can supply you which you wish to use on the site. Most commercial organisations probably won't agree to putting their things into public domain, so don't get your hopes up. Again, you will then have to fall back on fair use/fair dealing.

Journalists' views vary on using recorders. Many say recorders should not be over-relied upon.

In an interview, it often helps to put your source at ease.

When you are unsure of anything, clarify it.

Names are very important and easy to get wrong. Some journalists will write a name down and show it to the source to verify that it is correctly spelled.

Interviews are best the closer they are to the source: for example, at their workplace instead of over the phone. Information from news releases, phone or e-mail interviews, etc., should be noted as such in the article.

You should normally prepare for interviews by learning some background information. For example, if you profile a mayor, you shouldn't ask him when he was elected. You should be able to learn that elsewhere beforehand.

What they say and do before and after the interview should be considered 'off-record', that is you should not derive any quotes, and usually should not use anything from it except to develop the general 'feel'. You should specifically ask the source for permission if you do want to use any details of your 'off-record' observations -- unless there is an over-riding public benefit, such as if you witnessed a murder.

Since Wikinews has no formal approval process for authors, when contacting sources, you must represent yourself as an independent author/researcher, not as a 'representative' of Wikinews. You may of course inform the source where you are planning to publish, but please ensure they understand in this case that your own views and activities are not representative of anyone else who uses Wikinews, nor does the reputation of Wikinews, or lack of reputation of Wikinews, reflect on yourself. It is an open, public news forum, with transitory quality control, at best.

Be polite and act without bias.

Eyewitness accounts[edit | edit source]

When reporting as a witness of an event, explain briefly in the Original reporting notes section of the Talk subpage (described above) who you are and why you were present, in relation to the event, in addition to the usual features of the story. In this circumstance you are the source, and others may wish to contact you for verification, interview, or for other details.
