On the night of 29 December 2023, Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine with Shahed drones, cruise and ballistic missiles, and Kinzhal missiles. In total, Russian forces launched about 110 missiles, most of which were shot down, President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

During the missile strike in Lviv, Ukrainian basketball player, coach, and Master of Sports of Ukraine of international class Viktor Kobzistyi was killed. As a result of the attack in Lviv, 30 people were injured. Air defense forces were working in the capital during the attack, and rocket fragments fell in various areas of the city.

US President Joe Biden commented on the shelling: “Putin has not only tried to destroy Ukraine, he has also threatened some of our NATO allies. When dictators and autocrats are allowed to run rampant in Europe, the risk of the United States becoming directly involved increases.” The Foreign Ministry of Germany stated on Twitter: “Russia is spreading terror again across Ukraine, launching over 100 missiles and drones that destroyed, among other things, a maternity hospital and uprooted people from their daily lives.”
