Welcome to Wikimedia Incubator!

At the right there are some important links, and here are some tips and info:

  • If you haven't created a user page yet, please create one with for example Babel templates on it.
  • You can select your interface language in your preferences.
  • If you make articles, templates or categories, don't forget to add a prefix!
  • If your knowledge of English is good, you can help with translating pages to other languages you know, so more people can understand them!
  • If you want to translate the interface, please go to Translatewiki.net and follow their instructions.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask them on Incubator:Community Portal.

"it’s written in Wp/enm:"This test has a valid language code, but note that it is an extinct, historical or ancient language so it will be hard to get a Wikimedia project.""?

[edit source]

Hello, in I:RFD, you said so. I wonder if your programming level is good or not, this sentence isn't really written in that test project, but within Template:Test wiki/core. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 00:50, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

I know programming and of course it’s written in a template since if you enter other test wikis in ancient languages you see the same template, but I think you get what I meant to say. If you enter any of those test wikis, you see text that says that it will be hard to get a wikimedia project, hard but not impossible. -Gifnk dlm 2020 (talk) 08:42, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Categories

[edit source]

Hi. I see that you haven't added categories to any of your pages. Make sure to add them when you make new pages. Thanks! --CanadianToast (talk) 19:11, 7 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sortkeys

[edit source]

Hello, I saw your thanks; would you like me do add the sortkeys to all Middle English Wikipedia articles? Also, do you think it is better to use DEFAULTSORT or by-category sortkeys? 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 16:18, 8 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

@1234qwer1234qwer4, I would greatly appreciate it if you added sort keys to all the articles! About the sorting, I always prefer typing the sort keys together with the category. The default sort template unfortunately doesn’t exist in Middle English Wikipedia but you can ask an admin to import it. Currently we only have 4 categories but when we have more it will be very useful. -Gifnk dlm 2020 (talk) 17:24, 8 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I'll try to add it everywhere. DEFAULTSORT is not a template by the way, it is a magic word and therefore available everywhere. 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 17:44, 8 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
@1234qwer1234qwer4, great! That way it will also be easier to change it in case the page get moved. -Gifnk dlm 2020 (talk) 18:35, 8 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
So, I've done the articles that are in topic categories. The ones in Category:Wp/enm sorted under "W", except for those that start with W, are not categorised in any other way. While I am at it, I think it would make sense to expand the category system a bit. Is Category:Wp/enm/Peeple correct Middle English? 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 19:18, 8 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
@1234qwer1234qwer4, wow I’m impressed! I have checked in this Middle English dictionary and peeple is correct Middle English. It’s important to remember that Middle English didn’t have a universal spelling - it had many dialects and many correct ways to spell. It’s impossible to memorize all of them, so I recommend checking in this dictionary and in wikitionary when uncertain. In the Middle English dictionary that I linked you can see quotations to make sure your grammar is correct and also to check which spelling you want to use. The form pepul is also correct apparently. -Gifnk dlm 2020 (talk) 13:57, 9 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
I've created the category (as well as some others). For people, I followed the convention to use "Family name, first name" as the DEFAULTSORT. To the remaining articles, I think just adding the DEFAULTSORT is enough for now. 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 15:38, 9 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
@1234qwer1234qwer4, thank you very much! -Gifnk dlm 2020 (talk) 15:45, 9 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Done, I think. 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 15:54, 9 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Gifnk dlm 2020:! I created an svg logo for the Middle English wikipedia. Hope you find it useful! --PastelKos (talk) 16:21, 26 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

@PastelKos: thank you very much! Do you think thta it should be used in the main page instead of having the text as text? -Gifnk dlm 2020 (talk) 17:06, 26 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Gifnk dlm 2020: whatever you want! Keep in mind though that the wiki logos use a different font to the one in the main page. --PastelKos (talk) 17:10, 26 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@PastelKos: thank you very much! I used it. -Gifnk dlm 2020 (talk) 20:31, 26 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Any suggestion

[edit source]

Hello Gifnk dlm! I want a suggestion from you! Meitei (Manipuri) language is soon to be approved by Google Translate. It is currently under beta version. But to my surprise, GT is using Bengali script (bn) instead of Meitei script (mni). On the other hand, all the Manipuri sentences in every possible Wikimedia sister projects use Meitei script. What best can we do as Wikimedians, from our side? If things go on like letting it go as it is, then it will really break the interest of all the participants in mni wikipedia, mni wiktionary, omp incubator, & even some mni contributors in Commons & wikidata! Haoreima (talk) 09:57, 25 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Haoreima:, I see what you mean. That sure is a problem. You might want to check Ladino Wikipedia (also known as Judaeo-Spanish Wikipedia). The langage can be written in both Hebrew and Latin script and the wiki though if I’m not mistaken they just created to pages for every article. Another good example is Old English Wikipedia which if you are in the desktop view, you can toggle between Latin script and runes which is really cool and if you look on the URL, it’s the same article. Though I’m not sure how it’s done nor if it will work for Meitei. Can any letter or combination of letters in Meitei script be converted to a letter or a combination in Bengali script? If yes, then I would be looking in that direction. BTW, can Ancient Meitei be written in both scripts or only in Meitei script? -Gifnk dlm 2020 (talk) 13:37, 25 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Actually we don't want to do that! Meitei script and Bengali script are both abugidas but are independent from each other. In mni wikipedia, you may see only Meitei script is engaged and sometimes to denote Bengali words template "lang-bn" is used. And for Ancient Manipuri, Meitei script should only be used. Haoreima (talk) 13:56, 25 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
This may be useful too - See Haoreima (talk) 13:57, 25 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
And please read this:- Here I need your suggestions! Haoreima (talk) 13:58, 25 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima: I see. To begin, I’m really happy for you that you that your native alphabet is being revived. Unfortunately, I don’t see anything that can be done other than contacting google which I see as already been done/is in progress. -Gifnk dlm 2020 (talk) 16:37, 25 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Can you tell me how to translate Commons' main page into mni? I want to do translations of all the possible important pages of Commons and meta wiki into mni! Haoreima (talk) 18:51, 25 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima:, I wish I could help you. I tried to translate some words for Middle English Wikipedia but never really understood how it works. I only understand that it uses some “wikitranslate” and that the accounts in this wiki are separate from Wikimedia accounts. I suggest you consult Commons:Village pump. If you don’t get a reply you can try to ping a commons admin. PS I’m also interested to know how the translation works. -Gifnk dlm 2020 (talk) 19:28, 25 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Do you mean that if I get reply from the experts of Commons, shall I inform you too? Is that what you mean? Haoreima (talk) 19:43, 25 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima:, yes I would greatly appreciate it if you informed me. Thanks in advance, -Gifnk dlm 2020 (talk) 20:10, 25 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
I got some information, and sorry for telling you one day lately, here it is. Haoreima (talk) 14:04, 29 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hey Pal! I have some plan. Like Old English and Ladino wikis, as you show me, I have a plan for Manipuri/Meitei wiki. So, how are these multiple script usage for every article operated in the wikis? Are they controlled by some templates inside the very wikis? Or, do we need fixing at meta or elsewhere? Haoreima (talk) 13:10, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Template:Wp/enm/Ping, in Old English Wikipedia they used a script that changes every letter or combination to runes. It can be viewed here. In Ladino Wikipedia they created two separate articles, one for Latin Alphabet and the second for Hebrew Alphabet, then added a template suggesting to view the other one. See Astronomiya and אסטרונומייה. I suggest contacting them for more information. -Gifnk dlm 2020 If only Middle English Wikipedia could be saved(talk) 13:19, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Slava Ukraini Heroyam Slava 123: Hello friend! It's only today I got to know that you have changed your username! Btw, I want to tell you something! Yesterday, Google Translate has approved Meitei language (Manipuri language). Luckily, the translation tool uses Meitei script for Meitei language instead of Bengali script (a matter in which we were discussing in the past in this same thread). So, from now onwards, you can read any Meitei language websites without much problem. Btw, USA & Canada friends told me that they don't have any problem in using the translation tool. But for India & Australia, friends informed me that they have some problems in using the tool. I asked the GT team, they replied that it will take some time to fix it. Btw, my language is approved. If possible, please check the translation tool in your device. I think you are living in Israel (as you told me last time). And please tell me if you have any problem with it or not. I want to inform all these to the GT team! :-) --Haoreima (talk) 11:38, 12 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Checkuser result

[edit source]

Hi, Gifnk dlm 2020. I believe you've been pinged by 1234qwer1234qwer4. You still don't answer, so could you please explain this checkuser result? --Sotiale (talk) 13:57, 16 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Sotiale See Talk:Wp/enm/Mayne Page#What just happened. 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 13:59, 16 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@1234qwer1234qwer4: Thank you for letting me know. --Sotiale (talk) 14:05, 16 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Comment since both are confirmed, it's unlikely to let stewards believe that you're not socking, I will only tell to Gifnk dlm 2020 that: Please, stop using sockpuppets, that won't help you from launching enm.wikipedia.org, but rather help you from untrusting from Wikimedia communities. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 00:56, 24 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Canvassing

[edit source]

Hello. Edits like this could come off as canvassing because you are asking people to support a certain request for comment. Please do not do that. Please make sure your notices are neutral, I have already corrected two that are biased towards supporting a request for comment. --Ferien (talk) 15:20, 20 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Ferien:, oh I see. I didn’t manage to think of any better way to formulate it back then but it was obvious for me that also people who oppose that RfC will see it. -Gifnk dlm 2020 If only Middle English Wikipedia could be saved(talk) 17:38, 20 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Well, your aim in putting these notices should not be to gain support on a request for comment, but to make people aware of a request for comment, regardless of what they think. You've also got to make sure you are not only informing communities that may support a request for comment. --Ferien (talk) 17:39, 20 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Ferien:, I thought my edit was good enough because I knew tat people who oppose will also see this, click on it, and express their opinion as well. -Gifnk dlm 2020 If only Middle English Wikipedia could be saved(talk) 10:46, 21 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
As I said, the aim of adding these notices should be to gain comments, not supports or opposes. --Ferien (talk) 15:50, 21 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Ferien: Hey pal! As a native speaker of English language, what will be your opinion on the creation of the Middle English project? Please don't mind. I don't mean to ask you to support or oppose or comment in that particular RFC. :) Haoreima (talk) 13:05, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima, hi, I don't really have an opinion on it. --Ferien (talk) 16:24, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Could you please explain

[edit source]

Both of us received a pinging from meta recently. I am really confused with the exhaustive debates and arguments in the proposal for ancient language page at meta. If you regularly check it, could you please explain me a brief shortened summary of the momentum? I mean, is the current situation favourable or unfavorable to us? Haoreima (talk) 16:26, 11 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Template:Wp/enm/Ping, just checked and it seems as if all the discussion after the pinging is just people complaining about being pinged too many times. I don’t think this means anything to us. -Gifnk dlm 2020 If only Middle English Wikipedia could be saved(talk) 10:28, 12 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
I think it will be very hard to achieve our goal. :( Haoreima (talk) 11:52, 12 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello Gifnk dlm 2020! I have heard that test wiki projects at least need (1) 3 active users for 3 consecutive months, (2) 10 edits for a user per month, (3) at least 1000 articles, to get approved. Is this true? And, I have never seen this anywhere in written format at a policy page? If there's so, could you please show me? Haoreima (talk) 13:51, 2 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima:, I have never heard about the third requirement, but if you open any request page on meta you will see that a test wiki is generally considered active when it has at least 3 non greyed out users for several months in a row. To be non greyed out you need at least 11 edits. However I have seen in another place that you need more or less 90 edits per month in total not per user. However, from my understanding those guidelines are only advisory and loangcom can do whatever they want. Hope this helps. -Gifnk dlm 2020 If only Middle English Wikipedia could be saved(talk) 15:33, 2 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Then, I think incubator editors really need a lot of patience. Though we want our desires to be fulfilled soon, it's a very slow process. Haoreima (talk) 15:36, 2 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima:, agreed. Still try finding some like minded individuals. The chances of them approving a wiki with only one active editor are slim since they will say that if you lose interest, there will be nobody left to maintain the wiki. -Gifnk dlm 2020 If only Middle English Wikipedia could be saved(talk) 15:39, 2 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Today, I created Wy/mni (Meitei test wikivoyage). But I don't know how many people will come here for this! I have requested some including non-Meitei speakers to help at least for some minor edits! Haoreima (talk) 15:43, 2 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello Gifnk dlm 2020! May I know are you an English (by English, I mean Anglo-Saxon origin) or a Hebrew? I saw you live in Israel, and you have English as your L1 (probably, as you have en-N)! Just curious! Haoreima (talk) 14:49, 6 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima:, oh lol. I’m Ukrainian, live in Israel, and English is my native language because my parents were working in England when I was young, then came back to Israel. In order to immigrate to Israel you need at least one Jewish grandparent but to be Jew you mother needs to be Jewish. -Gifnk dlm 2020 Happy New Year 🎄❄️⛄️🎇 (talk) 15:40, 6 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Sometimes, I fear if Middle English test wiki might get deleted. Once it was about to be deleted, right! Then, you saved it, I think so. If you weren't active in incubator, then is there any chance of enn getting gone? I just got worried about it! Haoreima (talk) 15:48, 6 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
It's very heartbreaking to me that I could not create any new article in Wp/omp. While trying to create so, it's automatically blocked, though I can edit the already created pages! Haoreima (talk) 16:02, 6 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima:, hopefully both enm and omp wp will stay online but if not an admin has assured me that they always give a chance to preserve the works though currently there’s no consensus for deletion so I doubt it will happen. About not being able to create pages in omp wp, have you tried contacting incubator admins (special:ListUsers/sysop)? If you have, what have they said? -Gifnk dlm 2020 Happy New Year 🎄❄️⛄️🎇 (talk) 16:17, 6 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I have asked them. As of now, I am waiting their response! The reason appeared when I tried to create an article in Wp/omp is something like

"Error, edit not saved. You are trying to create a page without a valid ISO 639-1 or -3 code. This code either is not valid or does not belong to a language accepted for new Wikimedia projects. If you came here from any other page, please return back and fix the link and then create the correctly named page. If by any chance this is blocking you from creating any page which you think has a valid ISO 639-1 or -3 code or belongs to an accepted language, please let administrators know."

Haoreima (talk) 16:21, 6 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Haoreima:, hopefully they will fix it. If you asked me to guess it’s probably a bug of some plugin that was added after people tried creating emoji wikipedia that thinks omp isn’t a language that exists. As I said, hopefully it will get fixed. Ps don’t hesitate to mention this in discussions in ME WP. -Gifnk dlm 2020 Happy New Year 🎄❄️⛄️🎇 (talk) 16:26, 6 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Middle English Wikipedia dump.

[edit source]

Since apparently, emails don't work, here's a copy of what would've been in the email.

Here is a link to the dump I mentioned, via OneDrive. Ensure you download it, as I may delete this at a later time (counterintuitive, I know, sorry). https://1drv.ms/u/s!Auyz_S3PJZIgw3C2soSzeNUVn1QE

I've already mentioned this before, but it's worth repeating. There are two methods to import this dump. One is through Special:Import of a local MediaWiki installation. The other is using maintenance/importDump.php, also with MediaWiki.

I'm not too sure of the dump's validity, but I can test it if you want. Just let me know of any additional things you need.

Community portal/Village pump/Simple talk

[edit source]

Hey friend! I just want to give you a small suggestion. Don't think too seriously. It's completely at your choice! I am not forcing you. Well, it will be good to see a community portal page for Middle English Wikipedia too. I am saying this because when Meitei Wikipedia was in incubator, I created the community portal for it. People used to meet there. When the incubation period gets completed, the community portal page, like other pages, gets imported. If you want to create so, you can even copy and paste the former discussion from the talk page of the enm Mayne Page to the new community portal. I said this because the talk page of enm Mayne page is exactly doing the function of community portal. Haoreima (talk) 12:56, 9 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Haoreima:, good idea. I was thinking about it but thought it would be embarrassing to create one if there’s not going to be enough activity in it but if it has the same amount of activity that the main talk page I think it will be good. I will suggest this in the main talk page. -📜GIFNK📖DLM💻MMXX🏰 (TALK🎙 | CONTRIBS) 13:11, 9 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Template:Wp/enm/Ping, interesting question. Haven’t thought of it. You can try to ask someone from Scots Wikipedia to check out Middle English Wikipedia. -📜GIFNK📚DLM💻MMXX🏰 (TALK⌚️📱⌨️🖥🖨🕹💽💾💿📀📸📹🎥📽🎞📠📺📻📡🔋CONTRIBS) 12:25, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Your changes to my category

[edit source]

Hello, Gifnk dlm, thanks for getting rid of the subcategory of the category Isolate langages of Australia of the same name. I made that subcategory accidentally and I do not know how I did it (I'm not good with the more complicated wikitext and such), and may I ask you how you did it? Template:Wp/enm/Ping, Sure! You typed at the end Category:Wp/enm/Langage isolates of Australia [[Category:Wp/enm/Langage isolates of Australia]], which makes it a subcategory of itself. I changed it to be a subcategory of Category:Wp/enm/Langages. Ps, if you want to link to a category, you write [[:Category:Wp/enm/Example]]. If you don’t add the :, then you adding the page to the specified category. -🇺🇦GIFNK🇺🇦DLM🇺🇦MMXX🇺🇦SLAVA🇺🇦UKRAINI🇺🇦(TALK)🇺🇦 21:18, 22 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
