I have a lot of original Ottoman language books. They are one hunred years old. I looked to it again this is true أرطغرل I explain Ertuğrul there is two r here r=ر but. there is one r here أرطغل= Ertuğul one r missing so this is true أرطغرل

Well, the Ottoman word for "encyclopedia" is not exactly دانشنامه; rather, that is the Persian word for it. There is the word—coming from French—آنسيقلوپدی, while the word دانشنامه in Ottoman can also mean شهادتنامه (i.e., "testimonial", "certificate", or "diploma"—a meaning that also exists in the Persian word).

I followed the example of the Persian Wikipedia in using دانشنامه, which is the word used there, and it may have been a mistake, since www.aryanpour.com, which is fairly reliable, lists the word as meaning only "diploma" and not "encyclopedia". Perhaps we should use آنسيقلوپدی instead, or we could conduct a poll of those who are working on the site to see what they think most appropriate. The word order changed because of something called اضافت (izâfet), where an unwritten phoneme ("-i" or "-ı" in Turkish pronunciation) is attached to a preceding word to indicate a number of different things; most often, it's something similar to a genitive, but can also be used to link a following adjective (such as سربست) to the noun (in this case, آنسيقلوپدی) that precedes it. Thus, we get ansiḳlopedi-yi serbest—but it could just as well have been written serbest ansiḳlopedi. —Saposcat 19:18, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The main issue is that Tarih thinks that, in Ottoman Turkish, the word for "encyclopedia" should be written with the letter ك (kef) for the "k"-sound, rather than the letter ق (kaf). Kef is used in conjunction with front vowels, and kaf is used in conjunction with back vowels. According to those rules, I admit, the kef would be the appropriate vowel insofar as it preceded by a front vowel—the only problem is that it was not written that way; it was—for whatever reason (possibly assimilation with the later back vowel sound)—written with a kaf, as can be clearly seen in the authoritative Redhouse Ottoman-English dictionary. So, that's the crux of the argument that's developed into the Ottoman Turkish Wikipedia's first edit war. —Saposcat 22:04, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Encyclopedia آنسقلوپدی / آنسیقلوپه‌دی[edit source]

Fox Maccloud, My apologies for jumping in the Encyclopaedia discussion, and rather late too. Just thought letting you know, that today Farsi/Persian is in the same boat as the modern Turkish, both language have gone trough transformation of filtering Arabic and then filtering each others words(Turkish and Farsi). In case of Turkish at least there is some strong authorities , which Farsi has been lacking that.

So considering above, we need to be aware that words such as "Daneshnameh"/"دانشنامه" are part of neologism , coined with the aim of driving "foreign" words out. In fact more accepted term for Encyclopaedia in Farsi is "Dayeret ul Muarif" (دایرةالمعارف) but most of active members in Farsi Wikipedia having strong nationalistic tendencies preferred this new term.. As Saposcat pointed out "Daneshnameh"/"دانشنامه" means "diploma" or certificate which a post graduate receives at the completion of his/her studies.

In the Türkce-İngilizce Red House Sözlüğü that I use, Ansiklopedi is written as آنسیقلوپه‌دی but I am aware that different spelling for the same words was quite accepted back then. Mehrdad 17:13, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
