Approving Sakizaya Wikipedia[edit source]

黃金文, Sabak Tutuy, Padakaw, Kimli miku, Tokoabibi, LamiHung, 海螺先生, Kimli isin, Lami Kulang, Hana ating, Sabak5388 and Corainn:

Hello! I am member of the Language committee, and I am very impressed and happy about the sustained activity that you (and probably more) have had on this Sakizaya test Wikipedia for a long while. Therefore I would like to propose its approval to the rest of the committee very soon – but before we can request its creation, there are some technical details I would like to clear up. So I will list some questions here, and you can answer them just underneath the questions. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 20:37, 16 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Case[edit source]

From what I've noticed while browsing pages from Wp/szy, it seems like you don't use capital letters at the start of sentences, but only in proper names. Is this observation correct? I find it very interesting, because the only other language with a Wikipedia that doesn't use capital letters for the first letter is Lojban, which is a constructed language. It is no problem, I just want to check that I have understood correctly. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 20:37, 16 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Jon Harald Søby We don't use capital letters at the start of sentences, but in proper names. Actually, there are few cases of Taiwanese indigenous language in the same situation. Thanks! Vickylin77amis (talk) 04:01, 21 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

If this language does not start sentences with capital letters, then should the wiki (when it is created as a separate domain) perhaps be configured to be case-sensitive, so page titles can start with either lowercase or uppercase letters (as in Wiktionaries)? Just a thought… - dcljr (talk) 02:54, 26 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Dcljr Yes it will be, just like the Lojban Wikipdia. :-) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 08:26, 28 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Oh. Then shouldn't that be listed as an "additional setting" at m:Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Sakizaya? - dcljr (talk) 08:37, 28 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Namespaces[edit source]

Namespaces are for different types of pages in Wikipedia. I'm sure you've already observed them and how they work. Before we create the Sakizaya Wikipedia we will need to translate the following namespaces. Could you please exchange the Chinese words here for the correct translations in Sakizaya? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 20:37, 16 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

$namespaceNames = [
	NS_MEDIA            => '媒體',
	NS_SPECIAL          => '特殊',
	NS_TALK             => '討論',
	NS_USER             => '用戶',
	NS_USER_TALK        => '用戶討論',
	NS_PROJECT_TALK => '$1討論', // $1 will be replaced with the name of the project, like "Wikipedia"
	NS_FILE             => '檔案',
	NS_FILE_TALK        => '檔案討論',

	NS_CATEGORY_TALK    => '分類討論',

$namespaceNames['szy'] = [
	828 => '模組',
	829 => '模組討論',

Also, we need the translations for the namespaces Wikipedia and Wikipedia talk in Sakizaya.

Akamycoco (talk) 02:41, 28 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you so much Akamycoco! I'm a bit curious about the translations of the talk namespaces, because they don't seem very consistent. Normally you have a namespace ("X"), and then the talk namespace ("X_talk" in English). In most languages the talk space translations are usually the same except for the "X", but here there are many different ones: NS_CATEGORY_TALK is "sacacayen X tu pisubelidan tu kama sapimatatengil", NS_TEMPLATE_TALK is "pusibelidan tu kamu i X sapimatatengil" (words before "X" are very different), and some other examples. This is not a problem, I just want to make sure we understand each other before I add it. And also, if you decide to change something later that is not a problem. :-) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 15:18, 30 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Jon Harald Søby We usually use few words to describe the new terminology. And because of part of speech and grammar, there are three different sentence patterns in namespaces translation. Vickylin77amis (talk) 06:13, 12 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Vickylin77amis: Sure, that makes sens, I just wanted to double-check. I thought it might become a bit impractical to have such long names, but again: If you decide to change them later on, it's not a problem. :-) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:14, 12 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Fallback language[edit source]

I noticed in a discussion somewhere that the fallback language should be zh-hant. I'm assuming that's correct? The fallback language is what will be used for the software in case there is no translation for something. For example, if the word "Search" hasn't been translated into Sakizaya, "搜尋" will be displayed instead. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 20:37, 16 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Jon Harald Søby The fallback language is zh-hant-tw, thanks for your assistance! :) Vickylin77amis (talk) 05:39, 21 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia logo in Sakizaya

You need a logo for the Sakizaya Wikipedia! I can make it for you, but I need to know what the name of Wikipedia will be in Sakizaya, and what the translation for "the free encyclopedia" will be. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 20:37, 16 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Jon Harald Søby Sorry for the late reply. Akamycoco had replied namespace part. Wikipedia in Sakizaya is “Wyici-payke”. The free encyclopedia is “paybalucu’ay atu pakunizaay a payke sungila’ay cudad”. Thank you very much! Vickylin77amis (talk) 23:44, 29 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

I have made the logo now, Vickylin77amis. I had to split the "tagline" into two lines, let me know if it looks ok. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 15:31, 30 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi! Jon Harald Søby We would like to change the translation of "Wikipedia" and "the free encyclopedia". The new translation of "Wikipedia" is "Wikipitiya". And "the free encyclopedia" is "kunizaay a pitiyacudad". I hope it doesn’t inconvenience you too much. Thank you. Vickylin77amis (talk) 03:52, 12 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
No problem at all, Vickylin77amis. I have updated the logo (you may need to hit Ctrl+F5 to see the updated version on the right), and also changed the name in the prepared patch to the code. As you may have seen from the Phabricator task, the planned date for creating the wiki is Monday 25th of November, because of otherwise unrelated technical scheduling. Is the meantime, the contributors can edit here in Incubator as usual. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:06, 12 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Native name[edit source]

What is the name for Sakizaya in Sakizaya? I'm assuming it's Sakizaya. Is it spelt with a capital S or a small s? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 21:27, 16 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Jon Harald Søby Yes, Sakizaya is correct. Vickylin77amis (talk) 05:28, 21 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Vickylin77amis Thank you very much for the input! Could you have a look at the logo and namespace sections as well? As soon as we have those parts, we well be ready to request the creation of Sakizaya Wikipedia. :-) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 22:44, 25 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
