How should we write the countryname? ⲧⲁϫⲓⲕⲓⲥⲧⲁⲛ, ⲧⲁϫⲓⲕⲓⲥⲑⲁⲛ, ⲑⲁϫⲓⲭⲓⲥⲑⲁⲛ or some other spelling? Ϯⲙⲉⲗⲗⲓⲥⲏⲧ (talk) 00:08, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

As it's not Greek name and comes from Persian/Turkic i guess we could use ⲑⲁϫⲓⲭⲓⲥⲑⲁⲛ for Tajikistan and -ⲥⲑⲁⲛ in general for all -stan country names. --ⲡⲁⲣⲇⲁ (talk) 13:50, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
We should generally work out the rules for the consonants P, T, K in Neobohairic. Somebody (not me) said in a post some months ago, the strict application of ⲑ instead of ⲧ is a bit too much. I am still undecided. On the one hand, it would make sense from the Bohairic standpoint. On the other hand, the rule was just manifest in native Egyptian words, and today's Bohairic doesn't follow the rule either in loanwords. Furthermore, and in my opinion, most importantly, the rule was only applied in stressed syllables. In this case, as -stan is stressed, it would mean that ⲧⲁϫⲓⲕⲓⲥⲑⲁⲛ is the correct spelling. Additionally, Copts in Egypt today still follow the Graecobohairic pronunciation, which would lead them to pronounce ⲑⲁϫⲓⲭⲓⲥⲑⲁⲛ very differently. ⲁϩⲙⲉⲧ (talk) 14:53, 13 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think it was me. That is why I included ⲧⲁϫⲓⲕⲓⲥⲑⲁⲛ in my three suggestions above. It would be better to use the ⲑ ⲫ ⲭ only for p, t, k in stressed syllables. Otherwise, that is the nature of Coptic, b/p, d/t, g/k are just pronounced the same because in Old Coptic, there were no b, d, g. And later, when p, t, k were often softenend, they became b, d, g. In both times, there was no distinction between voiced and voiceless. Ϯⲙⲉⲗⲗⲓⲥⲏⲧ (talk) 15:59, 13 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, i agree. My point was that if a word is borrowed from Greek, we should write it as it is, regardless of stressed/unstresed syllables (like ⲓⲧⲁⲗⲓⲁ, not ⲓⲑⲁⲗⲓⲁ) --ⲡⲁⲣⲇⲁ (talk) 02:08, 14 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm also in favor of keeping the Greek spelling in Greek words. Ϯⲙⲉⲗⲗⲓⲥⲏⲧ (talk) 17:48, 14 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
