Description
English: Publicity photograph for Paul Gauguin's 1893 Durand-Ruel exhibition
Date 1894
date QS:P571,+1894-00-00T00:00:00Z/9
Notes
  • Gauguin is shown posing before his painting Te Faaturuma at his 1893 Durand-Ruel exhibition. The exhibition was a comparative failure with the Parisian public unable to understand or appreciate his paintings. Of some 40 canvases displayed, just eleven were sold. Edgar Degas, however, praised his work and purchased Te Faaturuma either at the exhibition or some years later (as he later recollected) from the dealer Ambroise Vollard. The photograph first appeared in Roger-Marx (1894).
