閩南語 Wikipedia[edit]

Language: 閩南語 (Ban-lam-gu) written with Han characters For information about this language: [1] [2] [3] Details of standard character set: [4]

ISO 639: zh-nan

Project type: Wikipedia (A Wikipedia page already exists for zh-nan, but is written using POJ romanisation, which is known and understood by only a very small number of Ban-lam (Hokkien/Taiwanese) speakers.)

Main page in 閩南語: 頭頁

--Voxmundi 04:23, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

There is only one Wikipedia per code allowed, see http://nan.wikipedia.org/ SPQRobin 10:40, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

I know that Wikipedia sites are supposed to have their own ISO codes, however, I note that there are a number of exceptions. I think that Hokkien/Taiwanese written with Han characters would be a good candidate for special treatment, especially as it is an important language being used by c. 50,000,000 people, the vast majority of whom are taught to read and write with Han characters. Indeed, there is a degree of digraphia in Ban-lam today, with a division between Han characters and romanisation (not just POJ, but also TLPA, Tai-lo, Tongyong Pinyin and many others). It seems quite important in current circumstances to maintain two sites as the majority of Ban-lam speakers do not understand POJ, whilst others do not understand Han characters.

There are exceptions, but that is no longer allowed by the current policy. If you want an existing language in another script/alphabet, it should use a conversion script. And btw, is it about the language of zh-min-nan:, or about Wp/nan. SPQRobin 16:11, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
If this is really about the existing Wikipedia in just another script, the best way to go would be a script conversion indeed. But, if I am no totally mistaken, a conversion script would have to be something line a complete bidirectionally linked word list in either script plus some non-trivial grammatical analysis, so as to fix ambiguities. While this might be a wonderful task for more thorough academic treatment, it is imho not likely to be had any time too soon. So, for the time being, we might have to find an interim solution. I cannot tell whether or not zh-Hans or zh-Hant overlap to a degree with nan-Hans or nan-Hant, respectively, which would rule out an extra Wikipedia. If there is no such huge overlap, there should however be a workable strategy avoiding too much duplication between the nan-Latn, and the nan-Han(s/t) Wikipediæ, imho. --Purodha 14:27, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
A conversion script is not a long list of words, but of letters of the two (or more?) alphabets, see e.g. the conversion script of Serbian. A conversion script however, works only if the each letter has only one corresponding letter in the other alphabet (afaik). SPQRobin 17:43, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Good, I created Wp/zun and wp/akz. Btw, are you a native or fluent speaker? SPQRobin 15:09, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

I am nearly native Alabama and I speak little bit Zuñi.

--Ulohnanne 16:20, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Very good! Wonderful to have a nearly native speaker of Alabama here ;-) So maybe it's good to concentrate on Alabama. I'll give more information on your talk page. SPQRobin 16:30, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

You are right that I was planning more time for Alabama!

Hainanese Wikipedia[edit]

Request

  • Proposed Project: Wikipedia
  • Language: Hainanese [hnl (proposed) ISO 639-3]
  • Test project: wp/hnl

Although Hainanese is currently assigned the ISO code of "nan", it actually has very low intelligibility, if at all, with Teochew and the current Minnan edition which is based on the Xiamen dialect. An application for the ISO code "hnl" will be made to SIL International soon. --Jose77 08:07, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

Please only start a test project when the code has been created. I have deleted the page because it didn't contain any important content. Thanks. SPQRobin 13:08, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

Dear Administrator I would like to start a new Lebanese project that would include information and articles about the culture, history, geography, politics, etc., please help me achieve this project with the information needed. The requested name should appear this way : leb.wikipedia.org

here is a link to some information about lebanon : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lebanon

Thanks for your help

A wikipedia is not an encyclopedia about a country or a culture but an encyclopedia in some language ; here is a project in Syro-Lebanese Arabic: Wp/apc. --Budelberger 03:05, 10 February 2009 (UTC) (Flag of France.svg).

Cajun French Wiktionary[edit]

Request

I would like to start this so I can slowly build up my knowledge of the language. I currently only speak a little bit of it (but I have a dictionary and grammar guide). When I think my knowledge is good enough to start writing pages for the Wikipedia, I can switch or (if I like working on the Wiktionary) do both. --Ooswesthoesbes 18:57, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

I'd recommend not to start this test, because the langcom requires native speakers of this language. And there is already wp/frc where you can work. But if you really want to start wt/frc, you can create it. SPQRobin 19:21, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
As I've already said, I'm not going to propose this test to the langcom (at least not yet). I'll start it later on today. It's a little bit too early now :) --Ooswesthoesbes 05:43, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

I have created Wt/kab. You can start at Wt/kab/Asebter amenzawi. (And it's Wiktionary, not Wikidictionary.) Greetings, SPQRobin 20:02, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Request For Southern Kurdish Wikipedia[edit]

Warmest Salutations.

We currently work in the body of Kurdish Wikipedia. But its prevailing language is Northern Kurdish which is not mutually comprehensible for the Southern Kurds. Also in many cases it just results into conflict as well as puzzling situations (due to the same subjects and to choose in which language they must be written over there). I am willing to initiate a Wikipedia test in Southern Kurdish, thereafter we can gradually fetch more users and collaborators in order to qualify the ultimate targets of holding an independent wiki for ourselves. Central Kurdish also was suffering from the same circumstances and now they have got a separate wiki. The language code is (ISO 639-3: sdh). 3,000,000 people, according to Ethnologue's report, speak it. The largest Kurdish city on the globe, Kirmashan, is the most important city where Southern Kurdish is spoken. Here is a Wikipedia Article about it (however it's breif): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Kurdish

You may also check these cites:

Thanks a lot.--Kak Language 15:15, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

The Test-Wikipedia for Southern Kurdhish has been created Here.
You could improve the format and layout of the Test-Wikipedia. (for example, see Kirmanjki (Northern Zazaki) Test-Wikipedia.)
Thanks. --Jose77 21:36, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

Dutch Wikinews[edit]

Dutch Wikinews was recently closed down because of lack of interest. Still, I would like to keep the chance to start things up again in the future. Until then, could I use the incubator to write some articles and perhaps get a community? Thanks in advance. - Andre Engels 23:41, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Don Cossack Wikipedia[edit]

Request for starting a test of Don Cossack Wikipedia / Донскаĭ Уiкiпедiĭ [5] ISO 639-6 code: dony "Main page" - "Заглаунаĭ сторонка" Some people think that a Don language is a dialect of Russian. But this mind has existed since 1918, when plenty of Don Cossacks began to resist to Soviet government, so the government banned it. In fact, there are lots of books, some newspapers, TV programs and Net-resources in Don language. It had been an official language of Don Cossack Republick till 18th century, in 1918-1920. All in all, there are some millions of speakers of Don language. Creating of Wiki-projects in Don language will help to save and to develop the culture of Don Cossack nation. AndreyAK 16:35, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but you can only start a Wikipedia in a language with an ISO 639-1 to ISO 639-3 code. ISO 639-6 is not accepted (yet?). SPQRobin 23:05, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Gurenɛ Wikipedia[edit]

I created the test page and a very simple main page for Gurenɛ Wikipedia:

Please check that i didn't do anything egregiously wrong.

I couldn't find an easy template for creating a nice main page for it, so i created something very basic. Any help with this will be appreciated.

There's no article about it in Wikipedia yet, but it's mentioned at en:Oti-Volta languages and the ISO 639 code is mentioned at Ethnologue [6]. --Amir E. Aharoni 11:28, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
